Chapter 3: The Inheritance My Mother Stole
My mother walked into the ballroom as if she had been invited to receive an award.
Margaret Bennett wore an emerald evening gown, a diamond bracelet, and the expression she used whenever she believed everyone else was being unreasonable.
She was sixty-two, elegant, wealthy-looking, and exceptionally skilled at making other people feel guilty.
When she saw me standing beside Grayson, she opened her arms.
"Claire, darling.""
I didn't move.
She lowered her arms.
"What's wrong?""
I held up the agreement.
"Would you like to explain your signature?""
Her eyes moved to the document.
For the first time that evening, my mother looked genuinely surprised.
Then she recovered.
"Where did you get that?""
"Daniel.""
She glanced at him.
"Daniel, this is a private family matter.""
He laughed bitterly.
"You offered Vanessa five million dollars to destroy your daughter's marriage.""
My mother sighed.
"That's a ridiculous interpretation.""
Grayson stepped between us.
"Margaret, why is your name on an agreement involving my ex-girlfriend and a fabricated paternity claim?""
My mother looked directly at him.
"Because you have no idea what your wife has been keeping from you.""
I felt the room tilt slightly.
"What does that mean?""
My mother gave me a sympathetic smile.
"Your father made some very complicated financial arrangements before he died. I was trying to protect your interests.""
"By paying Vanessa to accuse my husband of fathering her child?""
"By making sure certain people understood that you couldn't simply walk away from your responsibilities.""
Grayson stared at her.
"What responsibilities?""
My mother ignored him.
She took my hand.
"Claire, sweetheart, you need to come home with me. We can discuss this privately.""
I pulled my hand away.
"Tell me about the forty-eight million dollars.""
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
"You've been talking to Martin Reeves.""
I didn't answer.
My mother looked toward Daniel.
"Of course. He has always enjoyed interfering in matters that don't concern him.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Your daughter's inheritance concerns her.""
My mother turned sharply.
"Stay out of this.""
Grayson raised his voice.
"Enough. Margaret, answer the question.""
My mother finally looked at him.
"Your wife inherited a substantial trust from her father. I managed it for years. I made investments, handled taxes, and protected the assets while Claire was busy building her life with you.""
"How much is left?"" I asked.
She blinked.
"What?""
"How much money is left in my trust?""
My mother straightened her shoulders.
"That's not something we should discuss in front of strangers.""
I almost laughed.
Six hundred guests had just watched Vanessa announce that my husband had impregnated her.
Apparently, discussing forty-eight million dollars was where my mother drew the line.
I took out my phone and opened Martin's message.
"He's asking me to meet him tomorrow.""
My mother reached for my wrist.
"Don't.""
The word came out too quickly.
I looked at her.
"Why not?""
"Because Martin has been dishonest with our family for years.""
"Then you won't mind if I ask him to show me the records.""
She tightened her grip.
"Claire, listen to me. Your father made promises. You don't understand what he agreed to.""
"What did he agree to?""
My mother released my wrist.
For a moment, the room seemed to disappear around us.
Then she leaned close.
"Your father knew you would marry someone powerful. He knew men like Grayson would eventually want access to your money.""
Grayson stepped forward.
"Excuse me?""
My mother looked at him coldly.
"Don't pretend you didn't know about the trust.""
"I knew Claire inherited investments. I never knew the amount.""
"Convenient.""
I watched my husband.
He looked genuinely confused.
But my mother wasn't finished.
"Your father didn't trust your judgment, Claire. That's why he appointed me to oversee the estate.""
I felt something inside me break.
"My father trusted you because you were his wife.""
"Exactly.""
"And he trusted me because I was his daughter.""
My mother said nothing.
I turned toward Daniel.
"Do you have the attorney's contact information?""
He nodded.
"Martin Reeves. He's waiting for you to call.""
I dialed the number immediately.
The call connected after two rings.
"Claire?"" an older man asked.
"Yes. I received your messages.""
"Thank goodness. I've been trying to reach you for months.""
"Can you explain what's happening with my inheritance?""
There was a pause.
"Not over the phone. But I can tell you one thing. Your mother was never the sole trustee.""
My eyes moved toward Margaret.
"What do you mean?""
"Your father appointed a second trustee. Someone who was supposed to receive copies of every financial transaction.""
"Who?""
Another pause.
Then Martin spoke.
"Your husband.""
I turned toward Grayson.
His face had gone pale.
"What?"" he whispered.
My mother immediately stepped forward.
"Martin is lying!""
But the attorney continued.
"Mr. Hale was appointed as an independent co-trustee seven years ago. However, the appointment was concealed from him through a forged amendment submitted shortly after your wedding.""
Grayson looked at my mother.
"Are you saying Margaret forged a legal document?""
"Yes," Martin replied.
"And the person who helped her move the money was someone working inside your company.""
My husband looked at Daniel.
Daniel shook his head.
"Don't look at me. I just found out about the agreement.""
I closed my eyes.
Seven years of marriage.
Seven years of believing my family had been honest with me.
And now I was learning that my mother had been secretly moving my inheritance while arranging a public scandal designed to destroy my marriage.
Then Martin said something that made my blood run cold.
"Claire, there's one more document you need to see. Your father left a letter explaining why he appointed Grayson as co-trustee.""
"Why?""
"Because he discovered that someone in your family had been stealing from you long before you got married.""
I opened my eyes.
My mother was no longer looking at me.
She was staring at Grayson.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in her face.
May you like
Because Grayson had just whispered four words.
"Margaret, I remember now.""
