Chapter 8: The Name on the Fertility Record
Nobody spoke.
Martin rotated his tablet toward us.
The document contained a series of medical authorizations, laboratory records, and financial approvals.
At the top was my mother's name.
Margaret Bennett.
Below it was the name of the fertility clinic.
And beside the donor authorization was a signature.
Grayson Hale.
My husband stepped backward.
"No.""
I looked at him.
"Is that your signature?""
He studied the screen.
"It looks like mine.""
Margaret seized the opportunity.
"Because he authorized it.""
Grayson turned toward her.
"I have never donated anything to a fertility clinic.""
"Perhaps you don't remember.""
"Don't you dare.""
Martin raised one hand.
"Nobody should draw conclusions until we verify the original records.""
He scrolled down.
A date appeared beside the authorization.
March 14.
The same night Grayson had been in Miami.
But there was another detail.
The authorization had been electronically submitted at 9:42 p.m.
Grayson looked at his phone.
"That's impossible. I was at a dinner with investors at that time.""
Daniel frowned.
"Can you prove it?""
Grayson nodded.
"My credit card, hotel security footage, and the investor attendance records.""
Martin made a note.
"Good. We can request those records.""
My mother crossed her arms.
"You can investigate all you want. The documents are authentic.""
Martin looked at her.
"Authentic documents can contain fraudulent information.""
Margaret laughed.
"You're still protecting Robert's daughter, Martin. Even after all these years.""
"Robert was my client. Claire is his beneficiary.""
My mother looked at me.
"You really think your father wanted you to have all that money?""
I felt my throat tighten.
"He left it to me.""
"He left you a burden.""
"No. You made it one.""
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
"Margaret, you said the donor information was confidential.""
My mother turned sharply.
"Be quiet.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"You told me nobody would ever find out.""
Daniel stared at her.
"What donor information?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I was told there was a medical arrangement. I didn't know whose details were used.""
Grayson approached her.
"Why were you involved?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Because Margaret promised me five million dollars. She said I would have to make a public announcement, claim the baby was yours, and refuse to cooperate with any questions about the father.""
"Why?""
"Because the pregnancy would create enough pressure for you to settle.""
Grayson looked disgusted.
"You were willing to lie about a child for money?""
Vanessa's expression hardened.
"I was willing to survive.""
I stepped toward her.
"Then why did you send me that photograph?""
Vanessa glanced at my mother.
"Margaret told me to.""
My mother's face went rigid.
"That is a lie.""
"No, it's not! You told me Claire would panic. You said she'd confront Grayson, he'd become defensive, and the marriage would start falling apart.""
I stared at Margaret.
"So the photograph was part of your plan?""
She didn't answer.
Vanessa continued.
"You said the watch would be enough. You knew Claire had given it to him. You said she'd recognize it immediately.""
I remembered the photograph.
The watch.
The glass.
The hotel room.
The carefully cropped image.
I had spent one sleepless night wondering whether my husband had betrayed me.
And my mother had planned every second of it.
Grayson moved beside me.
"Claire, I'm sorry.""
I didn't look at him.
"I need you to understand something. I can forgive a mistake. I cannot build a marriage around secrets.""
"I know.""
"Then no more secrets.""
He nodded.
Martin interrupted us.
"There's another issue.""
He pointed at the fertility record.
"The medical authorization includes a second financial guarantor. This person paid for the treatment and signed a confidentiality agreement.""
"Who?"" Daniel asked.
Martin scrolled to the final page.
A name appeared.
RICHARD HALE.
Grayson's deceased father.
Grayson slowly sat down.
"That's impossible.""
Martin looked at him.
"The authorization was established through a trust account that belonged to your father.""
Daniel stared at the screen.
"Our father died four years ago.""
"Yes.""
"How could he authorize something afterward?""
Martin examined the document more carefully.
"He didn't. The original agreement appears to have been signed several months before his death. The later entries were amendments.""
I looked at Grayson.
"Why would your father finance a fertility arrangement involving my mother?""
He shook his head.
"I don't know.""
My mother suddenly spoke.
"Richard was trying to protect his family.""
Grayson looked up.
"From what?""
"From your father's mistakes.""
"My father?""
Margaret nodded.
"Robert and Richard had an agreement. They wanted to combine their family interests. Your marriage to Claire was part of that arrangement.""
I felt cold.
"Are you saying our marriage was arranged?""
"No. Your relationship was real.""
"Then what was the agreement?""
Margaret looked at Grayson.
"Richard wanted an heir who could inherit both families' interests. Robert wanted his daughter protected.""
Grayson laughed bitterly.
"They were negotiating our lives like property.""
My mother didn't deny it.
Martin closed the medical file.
"There's one thing I still don't understand. If Margaret was the original patient, why does Vanessa have a pregnancy record connected to the same arrangement?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I never said I was the original patient.""
Everyone turned toward her.
"What?"" I whispered.
She looked directly at me.
"The clinic never treated me.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"Then how are you pregnant?""
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
"Through a private fertility program. I was carrying an embryo transferred from another patient.""
Grayson stared at her.
"Whose embryo?""
She hesitated.
Then she answered.
"Your mother's.""
My entire body went numb.
Margaret shouted, "Vanessa!""
But it was too late.
Vanessa had already revealed the secret.
I looked at my mother.
"Why would you create an embryo?""
Margaret's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Because I was supposed to give your father the grandson he wanted.""
