Chapter 7: The House That Was Never Sold

“That signature isn't mine.””

I stared at the document until the letters blurred. My name appeared beneath a paragraph authorizing Marcus Bell to access a property on the outskirts of Atlanta. The signature looked convincing at first glance, right down to the little curve I always made beneath the final letter of Bennett.

But I had never signed it.

Detective Harris placed the document on the table between us.

“Are you certain, Ms. Bennett?””

“Absolutely. I've never authorized this man to enter any property on my behalf.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who owns the house?””

“According to the county records, the property remains connected to an LLC registered under Daniel Carter's name,” Harris replied.

“However, the ownership structure is more complicated than that. We're still verifying the beneficial ownership and the financial arrangements attached to it.””

I looked at my father.

“Daniel told me he sold that house before we got married.””

Dad's expression darkened.

“Did you ever see the sale documents?””

“No. He said it was an investment property he'd gotten rid of before we met. I never questioned him.””

Detective Harris nodded.

“That doesn't make you responsible for what he may have done with it.””

I wished I could believe that. Every discovery seemed to reveal another place where my trust had been used against me.

“What do you think is inside?”” I asked.

“We don't know yet. But the property appears in the records connected to Northstar, and there have been several recent utility payments despite the house supposedly being vacant.””

My father exchanged a glance with the detective.

“Then the authorities should obtain the appropriate warrant before anyone enters.””

“That's already being arranged,” Harris said.

“We have enough to investigate further, but we need to establish exactly what is happening there.””

I folded my hands in my lap.

“Can I see it?””

“Not until the scene is secured,” Harris replied.

“And I strongly advise against going there yourself.””

“I wasn't planning to break into a house.””

Dad gave me a look.

“You'd be surprised what people do when they're desperate for answers.””

“I'm desperate for answers, not interested in getting arrested.””

For the first time that afternoon, Detective Harris smiled faintly.

“Good. Keep that attitude.””

Two hours later, we were back at my father's hotel suite. He had arranged a quiet room where I could rest while the police continued their investigation. I sat near the window, watching Atlanta's traffic crawl beneath the afternoon sun.

My phone had been replaced with a temporary device, but I hadn't called anyone except the bank, my attorney, and the people handling the investigation.

I couldn't bear the thought of explaining my marriage to friends.

Not yet.

At four fifteen, my father's investigator called.

Dad answered on speaker.

“We've obtained the warrant,” the investigator said.

“The team is at the property now.””

“Anything unusual?”” Dad asked.

“A black sedan is parked behind the house. The front door was locked, and the windows have been covered from the inside. The officers are entering now.””

My heart began pounding.

“What if Daniel is there?”” I asked.

The investigator paused.

“We haven't confirmed whether anyone is inside.””

A faint noise came through the phone. Then the investigator's voice changed.

“Hold on.””

We waited.

I gripped the edge of my chair.

“What's happening?”” I whispered.

Dad raised a finger, asking me to be quiet.

The investigator returned.

“Mr. Bennett, you need to hear this. There are multiple computers inside, along with filing cabinets full of financial documents. We've also found several boxes containing identification records belonging to different individuals.””

My mouth went dry.

“Identification records?”” Dad repeated.

“Yes. We're documenting everything. There's a room at the back that appears to have been used as an office.””

“Anything connected to Olivia?””

“Her name is on several files.””

I stood so abruptly that the chair scraped across the floor.

“What kind of files?””

“We haven't completed the inventory. But one document contains a copy of her driver's license, and another appears to be a financial authorization.””

My father rose.

“Do not let anyone remove anything. Photograph every document before it's moved, and coordinate with the financial crimes unit.””

“Understood.””

The call ended.

I pressed both hands against my mouth.

Daniel had kept a secret house filled with my personal information. He had lied about selling it, and someone had used my identity to authorize access.

How long had he been planning this?

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Breathe, sweetheart.””

“I don't understand. Why would he need a whole house to steal money from me?””

“We don't know that every item there relates to you. Don't jump to conclusions before the evidence is examined.””

“But my name is on those files.””

“Yes. And we're going to find out why.””

His phone rang again before I could answer.

This time, it was Detective Harris.

“Mr. Bennett, we have a significant discovery.””

Dad switched to speaker.

“What did you find?””

“A locked cabinet containing insurance documents, bank records, and correspondence between Daniel Carter and Marcus Bell. There's also a calendar with several dates marked.””

“Which dates?””

“Tomorrow is marked in red. So is Friday.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does the calendar say?”” I asked.

There was a pause.

“Ms. Bennett, one entry reads, 'Final verification—Olivia must be present.''”

I stared at my father.

“Present where?””

“We're still examining the surrounding documents,” Harris replied.

“But there's something else. One of the officers found a photograph inside the cabinet.””

“What photograph?””

“It's a picture of you entering a medical building downtown.””

My blood turned cold.

I recognized the place immediately.

It was the clinic where I'd gone for my annual physical six weeks earlier.

Daniel had known about the appointment. He had even offered to drive me, but I'd gone alone because he claimed to have a meeting.

“Why would he have that picture?”” I whispered.

Detective Harris answered carefully.

“We're investigating whether someone has been monitoring your movements.””

The room seemed to shrink around me.

Then the detective added, “There's a handwritten note on the back of the photograph. It says, 'Confirm the appointment before Friday.''”

Dad's expression became unreadable.

“Send us a copy through the proper evidence channel,” he said.

“And have someone contact the clinic to preserve any relevant records.””

“I'll arrange it.””

When the call ended, I sank onto the sofa.

For weeks, I'd believed my husband was merely distant, distracted, and unfaithful.

Now I wondered whether every reassuring smile had concealed a plan.

My father sat beside me.

“You're not going back to that house,” he said.

“Not without the police, and not until we understand what we're dealing with.””

I nodded.

Then the temporary phone on the table vibrated.

An unknown number.

A single message appeared on the screen.

*Olivia, stop asking about the house. Daniel isn't the only person who will suffer if you discover what happened there.*

I read it twice.

Dad took a photograph of the message before touching anything else.

“Don't reply,” he said.

I looked up at him.

“Who would send this?””

His phone began ringing.

Detective Harris.

May you like

Dad answered, listened for three seconds, and slowly straightened.

“What do you mean Marcus Bell is missing?””
