Chapter 10: The Storage Unit in Savannah

My father read the message three times before he spoke.

“Don't respond to it, Olivia.””

I stood beside the hotel window, staring at the address on the screen. The sender knew about Thomas Reed, knew about the property outside Atlanta, and apparently knew something about the night before my wedding.

That last detail frightened me most.

“Daddy, what happened the night before I married Daniel?””

He slipped his phone into his pocket.

“I don't know.””

“You just told me Thomas was a business associate. Now someone is connecting him to my wedding.””

“Someone is making a claim. We need to establish whether it's true.””

I stepped away from the window.

“Please don't protect me from another secret. I've had enough of those.””

Dad's face softened.

“I'm not protecting a secret, sweetheart. I'm trying to protect you from believing a stranger before we know who that stranger is.””

I wanted to argue, but I couldn't deny that he was right.

Within twenty minutes, Detective Harris had arranged a meeting with my father and Eleanor. The anonymous messages, the invoice, and the photograph had become part of the official investigation.

Harris listened carefully as Dad described his old connection to Thomas Reed.

“You said he mentioned a storage unit near this address?”” the detective asked.

“Yes. It was during a conversation about a business dispute. Thomas told me he kept certain original documents outside his office because he didn't trust the people involved in the dispute.””

“Did he identify what the documents contained?””

“Not specifically.””

“Did he give you a key?””

Dad shook his head.

“No. He said he would contact me if he needed help retrieving anything.””

Harris wrote something in his notebook.

“Then we'll need to verify whether the unit still exists and obtain the appropriate legal authority before examining its contents.””

I folded my arms.

“How long will that take?””

“As long as it takes to do it properly.””

I hated the answer, but I understood it.

By early afternoon, investigators had confirmed that the storage facility still operated under the same management. The specific unit had been rented through a company that was no longer active. The facility's records showed that the rental payments had continued through an intermediary account.

One of those payments had been made six days earlier.

The name on the transaction was Marcus Bell.

I stared at the screen Harris showed us.

“Marcus is still paying for it?””

“Someone using an account associated with his business made the payment,” Harris clarified.

“We haven't confirmed who authorized it.””

Dad leaned forward.

“Could the storage unit contain the original ownership documents?””

“Possibly. We won't know until it's lawfully searched.””

The detective left to coordinate with the investigators handling the property case.

For the next several hours, I tried to distract myself by speaking with the bank's fraud specialist and reviewing the security measures Eleanor had recommended. My savings account was under additional protection, my credit reports had been flagged for suspicious activity, and the bank was investigating the unauthorized application.

Those were practical steps.

They gave me something I could control.

But every time I looked away from the screen, I saw Daniel's face.

I remembered our wedding rehearsal the night before we married. He had held my hands beneath the lights of the reception hall and promised that I would never have to face the world alone.

I'd believed him.

Now someone was suggesting that the most important decision of my life had been connected to a man my husband knew before we ever exchanged vows.

At 5:38 p.m., Detective Harris called.

“We've obtained authorization to search the storage unit. Our team is on-site now.””

Dad stood immediately.

“Have they found anything?””

“They're documenting the contents. So far, there are several boxes of business records, two external drives, and a locked metal case.””

My heart raced.

“What's in the case?””

“We haven't opened it yet.””

A few minutes passed before Harris called again.

“The case contains original contracts, financial ledgers, and correspondence involving Thomas Reed.””

Dad closed his eyes.

“Is there anything proving he was alive after his disappearance?””

“There are documents dated several months afterward that appear to have been signed by him. We need to authenticate the signatures and establish who prepared them.””

I pressed a hand against my chest.

“What about the night before my wedding?””

The detective paused.

“We found a folder labeled with the date of your wedding rehearsal.””

I felt the room tilt.

“What does it contain?””

“An envelope addressed to Daniel Carter.””

My father turned toward me.

“Open it,” he said.

Harris explained that the contents would be photographed and cataloged before being examined. He wouldn't speculate about what the documents meant until the evidence had been reviewed.

The wait was unbearable.

At 7:10 p.m., he called once more.

“We've found a letter signed by Thomas Reed. It appears to have been written shortly before your wedding.””

“What's in it?””

“The letter refers to Daniel, an unresolved financial dispute, and a warning that someone was preparing to use your marriage to gain access to assets connected to a business arrangement.””

My knees weakened.

“My marriage?””

“That's how the letter is worded. We're still verifying its authenticity and the surrounding records.””

Dad took the phone from me.

“Does the letter explain what happened to Thomas?””

“No. But it references a meeting scheduled for the evening before the wedding.””

I stared at my father.

He looked as stunned as I felt.

Harris continued.

“There is also a second document. It's a handwritten note from Daniel, apparently responding to Thomas's letter.””

“What does Daniel's note say?”” I whispered.

The detective took a breath.

“It says, 'The wedding changes nothing. She still doesn't know who you really are.''”

Nobody spoke.

Then Harris added one more detail.

“The note is dated the day before your wedding, Olivia. But the envelope containing it was sealed inside the metal case, along with a photograph of Daniel standing outside the storage facility.””

I turned toward Dad.

“What was Daniel hiding from me?””

He reached for my hand.

“I don't know yet, sweetheart.””

My temporary phone vibrated.

Another anonymous message.

*The storage unit was only the beginning. Ask your father why Thomas chose him as the person to receive the documents.*

I showed Dad the screen.

He read it, then slowly sat down.

For the first time, I saw him looking not at the evidence, but at himself.

“Daddy?””

He raised his eyes.

“There's something I haven't told you about Thomas Reed.””

My throat tightened.

“What?””

Dad's voice dropped.

“The last time I saw him in person, he asked me to keep an eye on you.””

I stared at him.

“That was before my wedding?””

“Yes.””

“Why would Thomas Reed ask you to protect me?””

May you like

Dad's answer changed everything.

“Because he believed Daniel was already planning to marry you.””
