Chapter 6: The Recording Daniel Forgot to Delete

Vanessa's meeting took place the following afternoon in a conference room at the police station.

My father wanted to accompany me, but the detective explained that Vanessa had requested a private conversation with me before giving her full statement. After discussing the arrangement with the investigator and my father's attorney, I agreed to meet her with officers nearby.

I didn't trust her.

I wasn't sure I ever could.

But I needed answers.

When Vanessa entered, she wasn't wearing the red coat from the photographs. She had on a gray sweater, dark trousers, and no makeup. Without the polished appearance I'd seen in pictures, she looked younger than I expected.

She stopped when she saw my sling.

“Oh, Olivia.””

“Don't.””

She closed her mouth.

I pointed to the chair across from me.

“Sit down and tell me why you're here.””

Vanessa sat, folding her hands tightly in her lap.

“I know you hate me.””

“You're sleeping with my husband. What did you expect?””

She flinched.

“I deserve that.””

“You don't get to decide what you deserve. You get to tell me what you know.””

She looked toward the closed door.

“Are we alone?””

“The police are nearby. This meeting is being handled through them, and I'm not promising you anything.””

She nodded.

“That's fair.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Vanessa opened her handbag and removed a small flash drive.

“Daniel gave me this three weeks ago.””

I stared at it.

“What's on it?””

“A recording. He asked me to keep it somewhere safe.””

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he didn't trust his mother.””

I almost laughed.

“He trusted you enough to cheat on me, but not enough to trust you with a secret?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I didn't understand what he was doing at first. He told me he was trying to get money from a business deal that had gone wrong. He said Patricia had debts, and he needed to move funds before creditors discovered them.””

“And you believed him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because he told me he was leaving you.””

The answer landed between us.

“He said our marriage was already over. He said you lived separate lives and that he was waiting for the right time to file for divorce.””

I looked at her without blinking.

“Did he tell you that before or after he started using my money?””

“Before.””

“Of course.””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I know that doesn't excuse anything. I knew he was married, and I chose to believe him because I wanted to.””

At least she wasn't pretending to be innocent.

“What changed?””

She slid the flash drive across the table.

“Two weeks ago, I heard him talking to Patricia on the phone. He thought I was asleep. They were arguing about the insurance policy.””

“What did they say?””

“Patricia wanted the money transferred immediately. Daniel told her they had to wait until Friday because the paperwork wasn't finished.””

My stomach tightened.

“And what did you do?””

“I confronted him the next morning. He said I had misunderstood. Then he told me that if I wanted a future with him, I needed to stop asking questions.””

“And you stayed.””

“Yes.””

She looked ashamed.

“I was afraid of losing him. Then I found the recording on his laptop. I listened to it, and I realized this wasn't just about money.””

I picked up the flash drive but didn't insert it into anything.

“Why didn't you go to the police?””

“Because Daniel told me the recording would make me look involved. He said my name was on some of the company paperwork and that I could be charged if the investigation started.””

“Is your name on the paperwork?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“What did you sign?””

“A document making me a temporary administrative contact for Northstar. Daniel said it was routine. I didn't know what the company was being used for.””

“That's convenient.””

“I know how it sounds.””

“It sounds like you helped my husband hide money.””

“I did help him. I won't lie about that. I transferred funds between accounts because he told me they belonged to a property investment.””

She swallowed.

“But I didn't know about the life insurance policy until I saw a copy on his laptop. And I didn't know what the Friday payment was for.””

I studied her face.

“Then what is on this recording?””

Vanessa pushed the flash drive closer.

“Daniel talking to Patricia. You need to hear it.””

An officer entered after I called for him. We explained what Vanessa had provided, and the investigator arranged for the recording to be copied and reviewed as evidence.

We listened in a secure interview room.

Daniel's voice came through the speakers first.

“Mom, I told you the money will be ready Friday.””

Patricia answered sharply.

“And what happens if Olivia discovers the policy?””

“She won't.””

“She found the bank statement last week.””

“She doesn't know what it means.””

“What if she asks questions?””

A pause followed.

Then Daniel spoke again.

“By Friday, the situation will be settled. We get the money, and I won't have to spend another year pretending this marriage is worth saving.””

I felt my fingers go numb.

Patricia's voice returned.

“And Olivia?””

Daniel answered so casually that I almost failed to understand the words.

“Olivia won't be a problem after Friday.””

The recording continued, but I barely heard it.

I stared at the speaker.

He had said my name as if he were discussing a broken appliance or an unwanted contract.

The detective paused the recording.

“Olivia, do you need a break?””

I shook my head.

“Keep going.””

The next part was quieter. Daniel mentioned Northstar and a payment to someone named Marcus. Patricia asked whether the contractor understood what he was supposed to do.

Daniel replied that the man had been given instructions.

Then the recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Vanessa was crying silently.

I turned toward her.

“Did you know what he meant?””

“No,” she whispered.

“Not at first. But after I heard that, I searched his emails. I found messages about the policy and the payment. That's when I knew I had to get away from him.””

“Get away from him, or protect yourself?””

She looked down.

“Both.””

At least she had finally told the truth.

The detective collected the flash drive and explained that the recording would need to be authenticated and examined alongside the financial evidence. The conversation was alarming, but the authorities would determine what it proved and what additional investigation was necessary.

As I stood to leave, Vanessa reached toward me.

“Olivia, please. I know I can't undo what I did.””

I stepped back.

“Then don't ask me to forgive you.””

She withdrew her hand.

“I won't.””

I left the station with my father waiting in the hallway.

He saw my face and immediately approached me.

“What happened?””

I leaned against him.

“Daniel knew what he was doing, Daddy. He knew about the policy. He knew about the money. And he talked about me as if I were already gone.””

Dad's jaw tightened.

“Did he explain what was supposed to happen Friday?””

“Not completely.””

He nodded toward the detective, who was walking toward us with a folder.

“Then we'll keep asking questions.””

The detective stopped in front of us.

“We've identified Marcus Bell, the registered manager of Northstar Risk Solutions. We're trying to locate him now. There's also a new development involving the bank records.””

“What development?”” I asked.

“The $75,000 payment wasn't the only transaction scheduled for Friday. Another transfer was authorized from an account linked to your husband, and the recipient is connected to a property Daniel claimed he had sold months ago.””

I frowned.

“What property?””

The detective opened the folder.

He showed me a photograph of a vacant house on the outskirts of Atlanta.

I recognized the address immediately.

It was the house Daniel had told me he sold before our wedding.

The detective looked at me gravely.

“Ms. Bennett, we believe your husband has been using that property for something he never disclosed to you.””

May you like

Then he turned the page.

And I saw my own signature on a document authorizing access to the house.
