Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the $75,000

“Answer the question, Daniel.””

My father's voice remained quiet, but the silence that followed felt heavier than any shouting match.

Daniel stood between the security officer and the coffee table, his shirt collar crooked, his face glistening with sweat. Patricia had stopped crying. She was watching him with an expression I had never seen before—not a mother's concern, but the fear of someone waiting for a secret to become public.

“The company provides consulting services,” Daniel finally said.

“That's all.””

Dad opened the envelope.

“Northstar Risk Solutions?””

Daniel swallowed.

“It's a private contractor. They help businesses with sensitive situations.””

“What sensitive situation required you to pay them $25,000 twice?””

“I don't have to explain every business transaction to you.””

“No,” Dad replied.

“You have to explain why one payment originated from a joint account you share with my daughter, and why another came from a credit line secured against her savings.””

My head snapped toward him.

“What credit line?””

Dad turned to me immediately.

“That's what we're here to establish, sweetheart. Our investigators discovered a loan application using your personal information. We haven't yet confirmed the full extent of the unauthorized borrowing.””

I felt sick.

The $180,000 I had saved over eight years was sitting in a bank account I had always believed was safe. I had never authorized a loan against it. I had never agreed to let Daniel borrow money in my name.

“Daniel,” I whispered, “did you use my savings as collateral?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“You don't understand how business works.””

“Then explain it to me.””

“It was temporary!””

“How much?””

He looked away.

“How much, Daniel?””

“Seventy-five thousand.””

The number seemed to echo around the room.

Patricia suddenly stepped forward.

“He was helping me!””

I stared at her.

“With what?””

She looked toward Daniel, silently begging him to intervene.

He didn't.

Dad folded his arms.

“Mrs. Carter, perhaps you would like to explain why you needed $75,000 so urgently.””

Patricia lifted her chin.

“My personal finances are none of your business.””

“Not normally. But your name appears on a life insurance policy taken out on my daughter, and investigators have connected you to several transactions involving her financial information. That makes the question relevant.””

Her face flushed.

“You have no right to accuse me of anything.””

“I haven't accused you. I've asked you a question.””

“Then ask your daughter why she's so determined to destroy her own marriage!””

The words struck harder than I expected.

Even now, with my arm throbbing and my phone shattered on the floor, Patricia wanted me to feel responsible for what had happened.

I slowly stood.

“I'm not destroying my marriage. Your son did that when he hit me.””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Olivia, don't make this worse.””

“Worse than what? You beating me because I wouldn't hand over my bank card?””

“I lost my temper!””

“You took off your belt.””

He flinched.

For the first time, I saw him understand that I wasn't going to help him disguise what he'd done.

The doorbell rang.

One of the security officers checked the front entrance, then opened the door to two uniformed police officers and the paramedics.

The moment the paramedics entered, my father stepped aside so they could examine me.

A female paramedic knelt beside the sofa.

“I'm Rachel. Can you tell me where you're hurting?””

“My right arm and my side.””

“Did you lose consciousness at any point?””

“No.””

“Any dizziness or trouble breathing?””

“A little dizziness.””

Rachel exchanged a look with her colleague and began checking my arm.

While they worked, one police officer spoke to Daniel near the entrance.

“Sir, we received a report of domestic violence. I need you to tell me what happened tonight.””

Daniel immediately adopted his familiar professional voice.

“My wife and I had an argument. She became emotional, and her father arrived with a group of men who are trying to intimidate me.””

The officer glanced at the belt on the floor.

“And how did that get there?””

Daniel hesitated.

“I took it off.””

“For what purpose?””

“To make a point.””

My father turned his head.

“A point?””

The officer raised a hand.

“Sir, let me handle the interview.””

Dad nodded and returned his attention to me.

As Rachel helped me prepare to leave for the hospital, Patricia approached the sofa.

“Olivia, please,” she whispered.

“Don't let this ruin Daniel's life.””

I looked at the woman who had stood beside the couch while her son struck me.

“You were worried about his life when you watched him hurt mine?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't think he would go that far.””

“But you knew he was willing to hurt me.””

She had no answer.

Then my father's phone vibrated.

He read the message, and his expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He hesitated before showing me the screen.

It was a message from the lead investigator.

*We've identified the woman in the photographs. Vanessa Reed is not just Daniel's girlfriend. She has a financial connection to Northstar Risk Solutions. Additional records suggest a scheduled meeting tomorrow morning involving Patricia Carter.*

I stared at the message.

“Why would Daniel's girlfriend be connected to the company?””

Dad slipped the phone into his pocket.

“That's what we're going to find out.””

As the paramedics wheeled me toward the front door, Daniel suddenly called after me.

“Olivia! Don't leave without hearing my side!””

I turned my head.

He looked desperate now, but I couldn't tell whether he was afraid of losing me or afraid of losing everything he had stolen.

“Daniel,” I said, “you had four years to tell me the truth.””

Then I left with my father.

Behind us, the police continued questioning my husband and his mother.

And as the ambulance doors closed, Dad said something that made my blood run cold.

“Olivia, there's a reason that payment was scheduled for Friday.””

“What reason?””

May you like

He looked out the window.

“Because Friday isn't just a deadline. It's the date your husband expected your life to change forever.””
