Chapter 14: Patricia's Final Lie

By three that afternoon, Patricia Carter was sitting in an interview room at the Atlanta police station.

She had arrived with an attorney and a designer handbag, dressed in a cream-colored suit that looked untouched by the chaos surrounding her family.

When Detective Harris showed her the evidence connecting her to Northstar, she denied knowing anything about Thomas Reed.

When he showed her the life insurance application, she claimed Daniel had added her as beneficiary without her knowledge.

When he asked about the $75,000 payment, she said it was money Daniel owed her.

Three lies in less than twenty minutes.

I watched part of the interview from a separate room with my father and Eleanor.

“She's not going to confess,” I whispered.

Dad folded his arms.

“She doesn't have to confess for the evidence to matter.””

On the screen, Patricia dabbed her eyes with a tissue.

“Detective, my son made terrible mistakes, but I never wanted Olivia hurt. She's like a daughter to me.””

I felt a bitter laugh rise in my throat.

“Like a daughter?””

Eleanor touched my arm.

“Let the detective finish.””

Harris placed a document in front of Patricia.

“This is a message recovered from Daniel's phone. It appears to show you discussing the insurance policy and the Friday payment.””

Patricia looked down.

Her face changed.

Only for a second, but I saw it.

“That message has been taken out of context,” she said.

“Then explain the context.””

“My son was under financial pressure. He was trying to resolve a dispute.””

“What dispute?””

“I don't know the details.””

“Then how did you know the insurance payment was connected to Friday?””

Patricia's lips tightened.

“I never said that.””

The detective turned a page.

“Mrs. Carter, we have financial records showing transfers between accounts connected to you and Northstar. We also have evidence that you visited the bank with Daniel shortly before the life insurance application was submitted.””

She looked toward her attorney.

He leaned forward and whispered something to her.

For several seconds, Patricia said nothing.

Then she lifted her chin.

“I want to speak to my son.””

Harris closed the folder.

“That's a request you can discuss with your attorney. It doesn't change the questions we're investigating.””

The interview continued for another hour.

Patricia admitted that she knew about Northstar but insisted she believed it was a legitimate business. She acknowledged receiving money from Daniel but claimed it was repayment for loans she had made him over several years.

She denied knowing that the life insurance application had been submitted using my information.

The detective ended the interview without announcing any conclusion.

As we left the observation room, I turned toward my father.

“Do you think she knew what Daniel planned to do to me?””

Dad considered the question.

“I think the evidence raises serious concerns about what she knew and when she knew it. But we need to let the investigators establish her role.””

I nodded.

It was the same answer Eleanor had given me repeatedly, and I was beginning to understand why it mattered.

Anger could tell me what I felt.

It couldn't tell me what the evidence proved.

At six thirty, Detective Harris called with an update.

Marcus had provided access to additional Northstar records, including emails and transaction logs. Investigators had also identified a connection between Patricia and a company that received payments shortly before the insurance application was filed.

More importantly, they had found evidence that Patricia had contacted someone using the name Ethan Cole.

The communication had taken place two days before Daniel attacked me.

“What did she say?”” I asked.

“The message referred to Thomas Reed and asked whether he had been located.””

My father leaned toward the phone.

“So Patricia knew Thomas might be alive.””

“That's what we're investigating. We have evidence of the communication, but we still need to establish what she knew about his identity and whereabouts.””

I stared at the table.

She had stood in my living room while Daniel hit me. She had demanded my bank card, and she'd spoken about family loyalty as if it were a weapon she could use to control me.

Now the evidence suggested she had been searching for a man connected to Daniel's past.

I wondered whether the insurance policy had been her idea, his idea, or something they had planned together.

At seven fifteen, Eleanor received a call from the detective handling the financial records.

She listened carefully, then turned toward us.

“There's a problem with the life insurance application.””

My heart began racing.

“What problem?””

“The insurer has confirmed that the policy was never fully activated. The application was submitted, but additional verification was required before coverage could take effect.””

I stared at her.

“So the $2.5 million policy might not have existed at all?””

“The application existed. The proposed policy did not become active under the terms shown in the paperwork. That distinction is important.””

Dad exhaled slowly.

“Then why would Daniel and Patricia behave as though the money was guaranteed?””

“Because they may have expected to complete the required verification,” Eleanor replied.

“Or because the application was part of a broader financial scheme. We don't yet know.””

A new message arrived from Detective Harris.

*We have located Vanessa Reed's original correspondence with Daniel. One email suggests Patricia believed the insurance proceeds would be available immediately after Olivia's medical appointment.*

I read the message twice.

My medical appointment.

The photograph of me outside the clinic.

The note on the back: Confirm the appointment before Friday.

I looked at Eleanor.

“Did they intend to use my medical records to complete the policy?””

“That's one possibility. The investigators need to determine whether someone attempted to obtain medical information without your authorization.””

Dad stood.

“Contact the insurer's fraud department again. I want confirmation that no other applications exist.””

Eleanor nodded.

Then my phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

I answered cautiously.

“Hello?””

A man's voice spoke from the other end.

“Olivia Bennett?””

“Who is this?””

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

I stopped breathing.

Dad turned toward me.

The voice continued.

“I know you've been looking for me. I'm sorry it took so long to contact you.””

I pressed the phone closer to my ear.

“Are you really Thomas Reed?””

“Yes.””

“Where are you?””

“I can't tell you that over the phone. But I can prove who I am.””

My father motioned for me to put the call on speaker. I did.

Thomas spoke again.

“Mr. Bennett, if you're there, I need you to know something. Daniel wasn't the only person involved in the property dispute.””

Dad's expression tightened.

“Who else was involved?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Someone inside my former company helped Daniel alter the ownership documents. I discovered it shortly before I disappeared.””

“Do you have evidence?””

“Yes. Original contracts, correspondence, and a record of the payments. I've kept copies for years.””

I leaned forward.

“Why did you marry me into this?””

Silence followed.

Then Thomas answered.

“I didn't. Daniel chose to marry you because he believed your father could help him gain access to business relationships he had lost.””

Dad's jaw clenched.

Thomas continued.

“But that wasn't the only reason. Daniel believed you had inherited an interest in a property trust connected to your grandfather's estate.””

I stared at my father.

“My grandfather's estate?””

Dad looked as confused as I felt.

Thomas explained that a property trust had been established years earlier, and Daniel had apparently mistaken my family name for a connection to the trust's beneficiaries. The records he possessed were incomplete, and Thomas believed Daniel had been using that misunderstanding to justify a series of fraudulent financial maneuvers.

I shook my head.

“I've never inherited any property trust.””

“I believe you,” Thomas said.

“But Daniel didn't.””

Then he added the words that made my father sit down.

“Olivia, the original documents prove that the person Daniel believed he was trying to reach through you was never you at all.””

“Who was it?””

May you like

Thomas took a breath.

“Your father.””
