Chapter 13: The Man Waiting at the Marina
At 11:47 the next morning, I stood inside an unmarked police vehicle overlooking the marina where Thomas Reed's boat had been found five years earlier.
The anonymous message had instructed me to come without my father.
Naturally, my father had refused to let me go anywhere near the place without the police.
“You're staying in the vehicle until Detective Harris gives the signal,” he told me.
I looked through the windshield at the rows of boats rocking gently against their moorings. The air smelled of salt, gasoline, and wet wood. A gull landed on a nearby railing, then lifted off when a truck rumbled through the parking lot.
“Daddy, what if nobody comes?””
“Then we leave.””
“And if someone does?””
“We let the detective handle it.””
I glanced at him.
“You're worried.””
“Of course I'm worried.””
“You've dealt with dangerous people before.””
He looked at me, his expression unusually serious.
“Being experienced doesn't mean I stop being afraid when someone threatens my daughter.””
Before I could answer, Detective Harris's voice came through the radio.
“Movement near the eastern pier. We have a male approaching the designated location.””
I leaned forward.
A man wearing a navy jacket and a baseball cap emerged from between two parked vehicles. He carried a small canvas bag and kept looking over his shoulder.
My heart began pounding.
“Is that Marcus?”” I whispered.
Dad studied the man.
“I can't tell from here.””
The man stopped beside a weathered bench near the water. He checked his phone, then looked directly toward our vehicle.
A moment later, my temporary phone vibrated.
*Get out of the car. Walk toward the bench. Come alone.*
I showed the message to Detective Harris.
“Absolutely not,” he replied through the radio.
“We're not following instructions from an unidentified sender.””
Dad nodded.
“We've made contact with the person who arranged this meeting. Now we wait for identification.””
The man near the bench suddenly raised his head.
“Olivia Bennett!”” he called.
My breath caught.
He knew my name.
“Olivia, I need to speak with you!””
Detective Harris gave a signal to the officers positioned nearby.
Two officers approached the man from opposite directions.
He immediately lifted both hands.
“I'm not armed! I'm not here to hurt anyone!””
“Keep your hands where we can see them,” one officer ordered.
The man obeyed.
Then he pulled off his baseball cap.
I recognized his face from the photograph recovered at the secret house.
Marcus Bell.
“Mr. Bell,” Detective Harris said, stepping forward, “we need to talk about your involvement with Northstar Risk Solutions.””
Marcus looked toward our vehicle.
“Is Olivia inside?””
“That's not your concern right now.””
“Please. I need to tell her something before it's too late.””
Dad turned toward me.
“Stay here.””
But Marcus had already begun speaking loudly enough for us to hear.
“Daniel told me she would never find out about Thomas!””
The words struck me like a physical blow.
Dad opened the car door but remained beside it.
Detective Harris moved closer to Marcus.
“What do you know about Thomas Reed?””
Marcus swallowed.
“I know he's alive.””
For several seconds, the marina seemed to fall silent.
I stepped out of the vehicle despite my father's warning.
“Where is he?””
Marcus looked at me.
“Olivia, please. I didn't know Daniel would hurt you. I swear I didn't know.””
“Where is Thomas?””
“I don't know his exact location. I haven't spoken to him directly in years.””
“Then why tell me he's alive?””
“Because I received a message from him three days ago.””
Detective Harris immediately interrupted.
“What message?””
Marcus reached slowly into his jacket.
“It's on my phone.””
“Don't move until the officers instruct you.””
Marcus froze while an officer carefully retrieved the device.
The detective examined the screen.
A message appeared beneath a contact saved as T. Reed.
*The truth must come out. Tell Olivia what Daniel did before the wedding.*
I felt dizzy.
“What did Daniel do?”” I demanded.
Marcus looked at the water.
“He arranged a meeting with Thomas the night before your wedding. He wanted Thomas to sign over control of a property company. Thomas refused.””
“And then?””
“They argued. Daniel threatened to expose some confidential financial records that could damage Thomas's business.””
Dad stepped forward.
“That doesn't explain why Thomas disappeared.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Because I helped him disappear.””
Nobody moved.
“What?”” I whispered.
Marcus looked directly at me.
“Thomas discovered that Daniel had been falsifying documents connected to the property dispute. He was afraid that if he reported it, Daniel would retaliate against him and his family. He asked me to help him leave Georgia temporarily while he gathered evidence.””
Detective Harris's expression hardened.
“You helped a missing man disappear without informing the authorities?””
“I know how it sounds. I thought I was protecting him. I believed he'd return once he had enough evidence.””
“And did he?””
“No.””
Marcus's voice cracked.
“Months later, I received a message saying he was safe but couldn't come back. I never saw him again.””
I stared at him.
“So Thomas wasn't dead.””
“Not when I last heard from him.””
Dad asked, “Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because Daniel threatened me. He knew I had helped Thomas leave. He told me that if I spoke to the police, he'd make sure I was blamed for the disappearance.””
Marcus rubbed his face.
“I was scared. I kept telling myself I was protecting my family by staying quiet. Then Daniel started using Northstar to move money, and I realized he'd never intended to settle the dispute honestly.””
“Why the $75,000 payment?”” I asked.
Marcus hesitated.
“Daniel said it was for a private security arrangement connected to Friday's transaction. I didn't know what it involved. When I found out he had taken out a life insurance policy on you, I started looking through the records.””
“What did you discover?””
“That the payment was linked to a contractor who had been instructed to make contact with you under false pretenses. Daniel wanted you to believe you were signing documents to resolve a financial dispute. The actual paperwork would have transferred control of certain assets and authorized additional borrowing.””
My stomach turned.
“And if I refused?””
Marcus looked at the ground.
“I don't know what Daniel intended to do next.””
The detective stepped between us.
“Mr. Bell, you're coming with us. We need a formal statement and access to your records.””
Marcus didn't resist.
Before the officers escorted him away, he turned toward me.
“There is one more thing you need to know.””
“What?””
“Thomas didn't contact me because of Daniel.””
He swallowed.
“He contacted me because he discovered that Daniel had recently searched for him. Someone had found out Thomas was alive, and Daniel was trying to locate him before the truth came out.””
My father gripped my shoulder.
“Who told Daniel?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don't know.””
Then he looked at me with an expression that made my stomach tighten.
“But Thomas believes the person who told him about the search is someone Daniel trusts more than anyone else.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
May you like
Marcus's answer came quietly.
“His mother.””
