Chapter 3: The Man My Husband Never Knew

Daniel stood frozen beside the door.

For a man who had spent the last hour shouting orders, he suddenly seemed incapable of making a decision.

Patricia clutched his sleeve.

“Don't let him intimidate you,” she hissed.

“This is your house. You have rights.””

Dad's voice came through the door again.

“Olivia, sweetheart, can you hear me?””

“Yes,” I called, my throat raw.

“I'm here.””

“I'm coming inside. Stay where you are.””

Daniel turned toward me.

“You'd better tell him this was a misunderstanding.””

I looked at the leather belt lying near the coffee table.

“Would you like me to tell him that before or after he sees my arms?””

His hand twitched.

For a terrible second, I thought he might come toward me again.

Then the knock came once more.

Daniel unlocked the door.

My father stepped inside, followed by two security officers. He wore a dark suit, polished shoes, and the expression I remembered from childhood—the one he used when he had already reached a conclusion and was waiting for the facts to catch up.

His eyes found me.

He stopped moving.

I saw him notice my bruised forearm, the tear in my sleeve, the broken phone, and the scattered contents of my purse.

Something changed in his face.

Not rage.

Something colder.

“Olivia,” he said softly.

I tried to stand, but my knees buckled.

He crossed the room in two strides and caught me before I fell.

“Easy, sweetheart.””

He removed his overcoat and wrapped it around my shoulders. His hand rested against the back of my head as he guided me onto the sofa.

“Does anything hurt when you breathe?”” he asked.

“My arm. My side.””

“Did he strike your head?””

“No.””

He nodded to one of the officers.

“Call the ambulance again and tell them we need a medical assessment immediately.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Bennett, please. You don't understand what happened.””

My father didn't look at him.

“Olivia, did your husband strike you with that belt?””

I swallowed.

“Yes.””

“More than once?””

“Yes.””

Dad closed his eyes for a brief moment.

When he opened them, he turned toward Daniel.

“Did you hit my daughter?””

Daniel spread his hands.

“We had an argument. She became disrespectful, and things got out of hand.””

“Things got out of hand?””

“I never intended to hurt her.””

My father pointed toward the broken lamp.

“Did the lamp break itself?””

Daniel said nothing.

“Did your belt remove itself from your trousers and start swinging?””

“Sir, you're twisting my words.””

“No,” Dad replied.

“I'm asking simple questions. You're the one avoiding simple answers.””

One of the security officers moved closer to Daniel when he took another step forward.

Patricia immediately began crying.

“Mr. Bennett, please. We can resolve this privately. There's no reason to involve outsiders in a family disagreement.””

Dad finally turned to her.

“A family disagreement?””

She pressed a tissue to her eyes.

“Olivia refused to cooperate with a financial arrangement. Daniel became upset. Nobody wanted this to happen.””

“You watched him hit her.””

“I was frightened!””

“You had enough time to pick up your handbag, but not enough time to call for help?””

Patricia's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Dad looked at the security officer beside him.

“Make sure nobody touches anything until the police arrive. Photograph the room and preserve the broken phone.””

Daniel's composure began to fracture.

“You can't order people around in my house.””

One officer answered calmly, “We're here to protect Ms. Bennett and preserve evidence. You can discuss any objections with the responding officers.””

Daniel looked toward the open door.

My father noticed.

“Don't make another mistake tonight, Daniel.””

The warning was quiet, but it silenced the room.

Dad sat beside me again.

“Your arm needs to be examined. The ambulance is on its way.””

I held his hand.

“Daddy, why did you bring all these people?””

“Because I wasn't going to risk arriving alone when someone had told me he was being hurt.””

I glanced at the men standing near the entrance.

“Who are they?””

“People I trust.””

Daniel gave a disbelieving laugh.

“This is ridiculous. You think a few security guards make you powerful?””

Dad looked at him for the first time with something resembling interest.

“No, Daniel. I think evidence makes people accountable.””

He reached into his briefcase and removed a thick folder.

My stomach tightened when I saw my name printed on the tab.

“What is that?”” I asked.

“Something I should have discussed with you sooner.””

Daniel took a step toward the folder.

One of the officers moved between him and my father.

Dad placed the folder on the coffee table and opened it.

The first page showed photographs of Daniel entering a bank with Patricia. The second showed him leaving a restaurant with a dark-haired woman in a red coat.

I stared at the picture.

“Who is she?””

Dad studied my face before answering.

“Her name is Vanessa Reed. Our investigators have documented her relationship with Daniel for several months.””

My ears began ringing.

“Months?””

Daniel shook his head violently.

“Those photographs don't prove anything.””

Dad turned another page.

“They prove that you repeatedly told your wife you were traveling for work while staying at the same apartment as Vanessa.””

“That is private!””

“Your marriage is private. Forged financial documents are not.””

My fingers tightened around the edge of the folder.

“Forged documents?””

Dad hesitated.

Then he slid a copy of a bank application toward me.

My name appeared at the top.

Beneath it was a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

Except I had never signed it.

“What is this?”” I whispered.

“A financial authorization submitted using your personal information,” Dad said.

“It appears someone attempted to use your identity to obtain access to funds connected to your savings.””

I looked at Daniel.

He wouldn't meet my eyes.

Patricia's crying had stopped.

Dad opened the final section of the folder, revealing a life insurance application with a benefit amount of $2.5 million.

My name was listed as the insured person.

Patricia Carter was named as the beneficiary.

I felt the room tilt.

“I never applied for life insurance.””

“I know,” Dad said.

“Why is his mother the beneficiary?””

Nobody answered.

Then Dad placed one final document in front of me. It contained a scheduled payment of $75,000 to a private contractor, along with a message attributed to Daniel.

My father read the words aloud.

“Once Olivia is out of the picture, Mom gets the insurance money. Make sure everything happens before Friday.””

Patricia dropped her tissue.

Daniel lunged toward the document.

“That's not what it means!””

The security officer caught his arm before he reached the table.

I stared at my husband, struggling to recognize the man standing in front of me.

“What does it mean, Daniel?””

His lips parted, but no answer came.

Dad gathered the documents into a neat stack.

“Olivia, there is something else you need to know. The $75,000 wasn't the only payment investigators found.””

He removed a final envelope from his briefcase.

On its front was a date, a bank account number, and the name of a company I had never heard of.

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

“Tell my daughter why you paid this company twice before tonight—and why the next payment was scheduled for Friday.””

May you like

Daniel's face went completely white.

And for the first time, Patricia looked at her son as though she, too, was afraid of what he might say.
