Chapter 11: The Marriage That Was Never an Accident

I couldn't speak.

My father sat across from me, his hands clasped so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.

“You knew Thomas was concerned about Daniel before I married him?””

“I knew Thomas had concerns about a business arrangement involving Daniel. I didn't know the full extent of those concerns.””

“And you never told me?””

“Thomas asked me not to interfere unless there was evidence of immediate danger. He believed that if Daniel knew I was watching him, he might destroy the documents connecting him to the dispute.””

I pushed back from the table.

“So you watched me marry a man you suspected of being dishonest?””

“I didn't suspect he would hurt you.””

“But you knew something was wrong.””

Dad looked down.

“Yes.””

The admission hurt more than I expected.

For four years, I had believed my father trusted Daniel because I loved him. I'd assumed Dad's occasional questions about our finances were ordinary parental concern.

Now I wondered how many times he'd wanted to tell me something and had chosen silence instead.

“Why didn't Thomas go to the police?””

“We don't know why he didn't provide the information directly. At the time, he was involved in a complicated commercial dispute, and some of the documents concerned confidential business arrangements. I believed he intended to resolve the matter through legal channels.””

“And then he disappeared.””

Dad nodded.

“And I never heard from him again.””

I walked to the window, trying to steady my breathing.

“Did you investigate Daniel before the wedding?””

“No. I asked Thomas whether he believed you were in danger. He said he didn't have evidence of a threat against you. He was concerned about Daniel's motives, not your immediate safety.””

I turned around.

“That doesn't make it okay.””

“No,” Dad said quietly.

“It doesn't.””

For several minutes, neither of us spoke.

I wanted to be angry with him. Part of me was angry. But I could see the regret on his face, and I knew he had spent the last few days trying to repair a mistake he hadn't fully understood until it was too late.

“I need the truth from now on,” I said.

“You have my word.””

“No more deciding what I can handle.””

Dad nodded.

“No more.””

Eleanor arrived shortly afterward with an update from the investigators. The documents recovered from the storage unit suggested that Daniel had been involved in a dispute with Thomas over a proposed acquisition of several commercial properties.

Daniel had allegedly claimed that Thomas agreed to transfer certain assets to him. Thomas disputed that claim and maintained that the documents Daniel presented were incomplete or altered.

The dispute had never been fully resolved.

“Where does my marriage fit into this?”” I asked.

Eleanor placed a copy of a financial agreement on the table.

“This document is particularly important. It appears to have been drafted before your wedding. The language suggests that Daniel intended to establish financial access to assets held by his future spouse.””

I read the paragraph twice.

It referred to a marital property arrangement, but the document was incomplete and had no valid signature from me.

“I've never seen this.””

“That's significant,” Eleanor said.

“However, we need to determine who drafted it, who circulated it, and whether it was connected to the later credit application.””

Dad studied the document.

“Could Daniel have married Olivia to gain access to her savings?””

“It's a possibility the investigators are examining. We can't establish that from this draft alone.””

I sat down slowly.

“Then why me? Why not someone else with money?””

Eleanor hesitated.

“Thomas's correspondence may help answer that question.””

She opened a scanned copy of the letter recovered from the storage unit.

The first page discussed the property dispute. The second mentioned Daniel's growing interest in a woman whose father had connections to the private security industry.

My father went still.

“Keep reading,” he said.

I looked at the page.

Thomas had written that Daniel believed marriage would make him appear more trustworthy to potential investors. He also noted that Daniel had recently asked questions about my savings, my employment, and whether my father intended to leave me an inheritance.

The letter didn't prove that Daniel had married me for financial reasons, but it suggested that someone had been concerned about his motives before the wedding.

I covered my mouth.

“He asked me about my savings on our third date,” I whispered.

Dad looked at me.

“What did he say?””

“He wanted to know whether I believed married couples should combine their finances. I thought he was asking because he wanted us to build a future together.””

Eleanor made a note.

“Do you remember anything else?””

I searched my memory.

“He asked whether my father had a will. He asked if I expected to inherit his business. I told him Dad had no intention of making me responsible for his company.””

My father's expression hardened.

“And what did Daniel say?””

“He laughed and told me he was only curious.””

Eleanor exchanged a glance with Dad.

“That conversation may be relevant, especially when considered alongside the financial documents. Write down everything you remember while it's fresh.””

I did.

Every question. Every joke. Every time Daniel had asked about money and then pretended it didn't matter.

As I wrote, memories that once seemed harmless began to take on a different meaning.

Then Detective Harris called with a discovery from the storage unit.

The investigators had recovered a small digital recorder containing several audio files. One appeared to document a meeting between Daniel and Thomas on the night before my wedding.

The recording had been copied and preserved for examination.

“Have you listened to it?”” I asked.

“Only the initial portion,” Harris replied.

“We're still verifying the file's origin and context.””

“Can I hear it?””

“We can arrange that through the investigation. But I want you to understand that it may contain upsetting material.””

“I need to hear it.””

After coordinating with the detective, Eleanor arranged for us to review the relevant portion the following morning.

That night, I barely slept.

At nine the next day, we returned to the station.

Detective Harris placed the recorder's audio file on a secure computer. He explained that the recording was being examined as evidence and that its authenticity had not yet been fully established.

Then he pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

Thomas Reed.

“Daniel, you need to stop this before it goes any further.””

Daniel answered with a cold laugh.

“You don't get to tell me what to do.””

“You're using Olivia. She has no idea what you're planning.””

“Olivia believes what she wants to believe.””

My hands began shaking.

Thomas continued.

“She trusts you. If you marry her under these circumstances, you're making her part of a dispute she knows nothing about.””

Daniel's voice became sharper.

“I'm not asking for your permission to marry anyone.””

“No. You're asking me to keep quiet while you use her family's reputation to cover your financial problems.””

A chair scraped across the floor.

Then Daniel said something that made my father close his eyes.

“Once I'm married to Olivia, you won't have anything left to threaten me with.””

Thomas replied, “You have no idea what you're getting yourself into.””

The recording ended abruptly.

I stared at the screen.

“That's it?””

“That's all we've recovered from that particular file,” Harris said.

“There are additional files, but we need to examine them individually.””

Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Olivia—”

“Don't.””

He stopped.

I stood and walked to the far side of the room.

Daniel hadn't simply lied about his business dealings. He had discussed my marriage with another man as if I were a bargaining chip.

And my father had known there was a problem.

I turned back.

“What happened to Thomas after that meeting?””

Harris folded his hands.

“We don't know. But another file contains a conversation recorded two days later, after your wedding.””

My heart stopped.

“Two days?””

He nodded.

“The conversation appears to involve Daniel and an unidentified man. We're still trying to establish the second speaker's identity.””

“Play it.””

Harris hesitated, then opened the file.

Daniel's voice came through the speakers.

“The wedding is done. Now we need to find out whether Reed kept copies.””

The other man answered.

“And if he did?””

Daniel's reply was almost inaudible.

Then Harris increased the volume.

“Then we make sure nobody ever hears what happened to him.””
