Chapter 9: The Brother I Never Knew Existed
The phone slipped slightly in my hand.
I couldn’t move.
I couldn’t breathe.
“My only child?””
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“No.””
He sounded like he was crying.
“My son.””
My mother closed her eyes.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
Like she knew the truth was finally catching up.
“Who is he?”” I asked.
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
That silence scared me more than anything.
“His name is Evan.””
The name meant nothing.
But somehow it felt familiar.
“Where is he?””
Another silence.
Then:
“He’s gone.””
My heart sank.
“What does that mean?””
My mother stepped closer.
“Lena…”
I turned to her.
“You knew?””
Her face broke.
“I knew about Evan.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
She looked devastated.
“Because Marcus told me.””
The room became painfully quiet.
“Marcus told you he had another child?””
“No.””
She looked at Marcus.
“He told me Daniel had a son.””
Marcus’s face changed.
“Stop.””
My mother continued.
“He told me Evan was a problem.””
I looked at Marcus.
“What did you do?””
He said nothing.
The officer immediately moved closer.
“Mr. Hale.””
Marcus looked furious.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Daniel’s voice came through the phone.
“I know exactly what he did.””
Everyone froze.
The call was still connected.
Daniel continued.
“Marcus destroyed my life before he destroyed yours.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Tell me.””
“Lena…”
“Tell me.””
A long pause.
Then Daniel spoke.
“Evan found financial records proving Marcus was stealing from investors.””
My mother nodded slowly.
“He threatened to expose him.””
Daniel continued.
“And Marcus made him disappear.””
The room went silent.
“No.””
The word escaped me.
I wanted to reject it.
I wanted one thing in my life to be normal.
But Marcus’s expression told me everything.
“You killed him?””
I looked at my father.
The man who taught me to throw a baseball.
The man who called me his little girl.
His silence was unbearable.
“I didn’t kill anyone.””
Daniel laughed sadly through the phone.
“You always say that.””
The officer looked at Marcus.
“What happened to Evan?””
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.””
My mother stepped forward.
“You knew.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You have no idea what you’re saying.””
My mother pointed at the photograph.
“You threatened Daniel. You threatened me. And then you tried to take Lena away.””
My father’s face changed.
“You were never supposed to find out.””
The words came out before he could stop them.
Everyone froze.
The officer slowly turned.
“What did you say?””
Marcus looked horrified.
He realized his mistake.
I felt something inside me collapse.
“Never supposed to find out what?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
And for a second, I saw the man I used to know.
The man who loved me.
Then he whispered:
“Who you really are.””
My blood turned cold.
“What?””
Marcus looked at my mother.
“You should have told her.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
He laughed.
“She deserves to know.””
The officer moved between us.
“Mr. Hale, sit down.””
But Marcus kept staring at me.
“Lena, your mother wasn’t protecting you from me.””
I felt frozen.
“Then who?””
His voice dropped.
“She was protecting you from the truth about Daniel.””
I looked at my mother.
Her face was full of fear.
Not anger.
Fear.
And that scared me most.
Because my father had spent years lying.
But my mother…
My mother was still hiding something.
I whispered:
“Mom?””
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
The room felt smaller.
“Sorry for what?””
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a sealed envelope.
And placed it in my hands.
“My daughter…”
Her voice broke.
“This is the last thing I ever wanted you to see.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a DNA report.
But it wasn’t about Marcus.
Or Daniel.
It was about me.
And the first line made my entire world disappear.
*Subject: Lena Brooks.*
*Biological connection: Confirmed.*
I looked up.
“Why does it say Brooks?””
My mother started crying.
And Daniel whispered through the phone:
“Because Lena…”
A pause.
“Evan wasn’t my only child.””
My heart stopped.
“Your mother had another secret.””
The line went silent.
May you like
Then Daniel finished:
“You were never Marcus Hale’s daughter.””
