Chapter 14: The Room Full Of Secrets

My childhood bedroom looked exactly the same.

That was the worst part.

The walls still had the same paint.

The bookshelf still held the same old trophies.

The corner still had the small scratch from when I pushed my bed across the floor trying to rearrange everything when I was eight.

It was the room where I grew up.

The room where I dreamed.

The room where Marcus had hidden the truth.

Police searched carefully.

My mother stood beside me.

She looked around with tears in her eyes.

“I should have protected you better.””

I shook my head.

“You were trying.””

She looked at me.

“I failed.””

“No.””

I looked around.

“We all believed him.””

That was the hardest truth.

Marcus didn’t win because everyone was stupid.

He won because he was good at pretending.

The officer approached.

“Lena.””

I turned.

“We found something.””

He pointed toward the wall behind my old bookshelf.

My heartbeat changed.

The bookshelf had never been moved.

Not once.

The officers carefully removed it.

Behind it was a small wooden panel.

My mother covered her mouth.

“No.””

The officer opened it.

Inside was a metal box.

Old.

Dusty.

Waiting.

My hands shook.

“Who put it there?””

Nobody answered.

But we all knew.

The box contained files.

Photographs.

Documents.

A small recorder.

And a letter.

The officer picked up the letter.

“It’s addressed to Lena.””

My breath stopped.

I opened it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

Not Marcus.

Not my mother.

Not Daniel.

*Lena,*

*If you are reading this, then Marcus failed to keep the truth buried.*

My hands trembled.

*My name is Evan Brooks. I am your brother.*

I looked at the phone on speaker.

Evan was listening.

“I wrote this years ago because I didn’t know if I would survive.””

My mother started crying.

I continued reading.

*Marcus wanted something from our family. Something bigger than money.*

The officer looked at the documents.

“What is it?””

I turned the page.

*He discovered our grandfather left behind evidence against him. Evidence that could destroy him.*

My mother frowned.

“Our grandfather?””

Daniel spoke through the phone.

“Our father.””

I kept reading.

*Marcus spent years searching for the evidence. He believed it was hidden with my father’s records.*

I looked at the box.

Then at the documents.

*But he was wrong.*

The next line made me freeze.

*The evidence was never hidden from Marcus. It was hidden from the world.*

The officer opened a folder.

Inside were financial records.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Proof.

Not just of what Marcus had done.

But of everyone who helped him.

The officer looked shocked.

“This goes beyond one person.””

My mother nodded.

“I knew.””

Evan spoke softly.

“That’s why Marcus couldn’t let anyone know.””

I looked at the final document.

A list.

A list of people involved.

At the bottom was a signature.

My eyes widened.

Because I knew that signature.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“What?””

I held up the paper.

“Your father signed this.””

Her face collapsed.

“No.””

She took the document.

Then she started crying.

“I didn’t know.””

My mother looked at her.

“Maybe not.””

The room became silent.

Because suddenly the truth was bigger than revenge.

Bigger than Marcus.

Bigger than our broken family.

The officer gathered the evidence.

“We have enough to move forward.””

I looked around the room.

At my mother.

At Vanessa.

At the documents.

At the life I thought I understood.

Then Evan spoke.

“Lena.””

“Yes?””

“There’s one last file.””

I looked at the box.

“What file?””

His voice became quiet.

“The one Marcus was most afraid of.””

The officer found it.

A small video file.

Recorded eleven years ago.

The screen loaded.

A younger Marcus appeared.

He looked directly into the camera.

And said:

“If anything happens to me, Lena needs to know the truth.””

Everyone froze.

Because it wasn’t Marcus confessing.

It was Marcus warning someone.

Then he said:

“The person who betrayed me is the person Lena trusts most.””
