Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Perfect Family

I couldn’t process another secret.

Not another hidden name.

Not another person who had been pretending.

I had spent one day believing my mother was dead.

Now I had discovered my father wasn’t my father.

And the people around me had been hiding pieces of my life like they were protecting a dangerous object.

My mother held the photograph.

“This was taken twelve years ago.””

The officer studied it.

“Where?””

“Outside a private investment office.””

My father looked away.

That small movement told me he remembered.

“You knew him,” I said.

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The honesty shocked me.

“You knew Daniel?””

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

His face hardened.

“Because I raised you.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

“It’s the only answer that matters.””

I shook my head.

“No. It’s the answer you want me to accept.””

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Explain the relationship.””

Marcus leaned back.

“Daniel was a business partner.””

My mother interrupted.

“Not just a business partner.””

Marcus glared at her.

“Careful.””

She didn’t flinch.

“You know exactly what happened.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was silent.

Too silent.

“You knew too,” I said.

Her eyes moved to mine.

“I knew parts.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

I stood.

“Parts.””

My voice grew louder.

“But nobody ever knew enough to tell me the truth.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

The word came out immediately.

“You were.””

She accepted it.

That somehow made it worse.

The officer placed the photograph on the table.

“Who is the man standing beside them?””

My mother looked at me.

“His name is Richard Cole.””

My stomach tightened.

“The principal’s father?””

She nodded.

“He was the person who handled their legal problems.””

The officer frowned.

“What kind of problems?””

My mother looked at Marcus.

“Problems involving money.””

Marcus stood suddenly.

“This is becoming ridiculous.””

The officer blocked him.

“Sit down.””

Marcus stared at him.

Then slowly sat.

My mother continued.

“When I discovered the accounts, I found payments.””

“Payments to who?””

She looked at me.

“To people who helped cover things up.””

I felt cold.

“Like my death?””

She nodded.

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked at it.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

Static.

Then a man’s voice.

“Lena?””

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

Not personally.

But from the photograph.

“Who is this?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Daniel Brooks.””

The room changed.

My mother stood.

“No.””

The voice continued.

“I know you have questions.””

I couldn’t speak.

My biological father was calling me.

The man I had never known.

The man whose name had been hidden from me.

“Why are you calling me?””

His breathing was shaky.

“Because Marcus knows I’m alive.””

Everyone looked at Marcus.

His expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

Daniel continued.

“And if he knows I contacted you, you’re in danger.””

My mother grabbed my arm.

“Hang up.””

But I couldn’t.

I needed answers.

“Where have you been?””

Silence.

Then Daniel said:

“I’ve been hiding from Marcus for eleven years.””

My heart stopped.

“Why?””

His voice lowered.

“Because I know what happened the night your mother disappeared.””

Marcus stood.

“Give me that phone.””

The officer pushed him back.

Daniel heard the movement.

“He’s there, isn’t he?””

I looked at my father.

“Yes.””

Daniel went quiet.

Then whispered:

“Lena, listen carefully.””

I held my breath.

“Your father didn’t try to kill your mother because of money.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Then why?””

Daniel’s answer came softly.

“Because she discovered what happened to my son.””

My eyebrows tightened.

“Your son?””

The line crackled.

May you like

And then Daniel said the sentence that changed everything.

“Lena… you weren’t Marcus’s only child.””
