Chapter 10: The Truth My Mother Buried

The DNA report shook in my hands.

I read the words over and over.

*Lena Brooks.*

Not Hale.

Not my father’s name.

Not the name I had carried my entire life.

My mother watched me carefully.

She looked like she was waiting for me to hate her.

Maybe I should have.

“Mom…”

My voice barely worked.

“Why?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know.””

She sat down slowly.

“I was afraid that if Marcus knew the truth, he would use it against you.””

I looked at the report.

“Against me?””

She nodded.

“Because Marcus knew exactly how much power a secret could have.””

My father laughed from across the room.

A bitter, broken sound.

“She’s still making herself the victim.””

Everyone looked at him.

Marcus shook his head.

“Lena, ask her why she never told you about Daniel.””

I turned.

“Why?””

My mother closed her eyes.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I almost screamed.

“Everyone says that.””

My voice echoed.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they destroy my life.””

The room became quiet.

My mother looked down.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

She didn’t argue.

She didn’t defend herself.

She just accepted it.

“I made mistakes.””

She touched the report.

“But hiding this was the only way I knew to keep you alive.””

The officer looked confused.

“Explain.””

My mother took a deep breath.

“When I discovered Marcus was involved with Daniel’s disappearance, I realized something.””

She looked at me.

“Marcus wasn’t just trying to protect his money.””

A chill moved through me.

“He was protecting his identity.””

Daniel’s voice came through the phone.

“Lena, your mother found out Marcus had been using another name before he met her.””

I frowned.

“What?””

My mother nodded.

“Marcus Hale wasn’t always Marcus Hale.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Do you have proof?””

She pulled another document from the folder.

“This is from a private investigation.””

The officer read it.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

“It says Marcus Hale was involved in a company investigation twelve years ago.””

Daniel spoke.

“The same investigation that got my son killed.””

My stomach twisted.

Evan.

The brother I never knew.

The person who knew too much.

“Why would changing his name matter?””

My mother looked at Marcus.

“Because the man I married wasn’t the man he claimed to be.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Enough.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“You’ve spent years building this fantasy.””

My mother looked at him.

“No. I spent years surviving it.””

He looked at me.

“Lena, you need to understand something.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“Your mother has always been good at making people believe her.””

I shook my head.

“Stop.””

“I’m serious.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“You don’t get to do this anymore.””

His face changed.

“What?””

“You don’t get to make me doubt myself.””

For the first time, Marcus looked hurt.

Not angry.

Hurt.

And that almost broke me.

Almost.

Then I remembered the recording.

The brakes.

The cabin.

The lies.

I looked away.

The officer took the documents.

“Mr. Hale, we need to continue this investigation.””

Marcus stood.

“Before you do that, you should ask Daniel where he was the night Lena’s mother disappeared.””

Everyone froze.

My mother turned toward the phone.

“Daniel?””

Silence.

“Daniel?””

The line stayed quiet.

My heart sank.

“Answer her.””

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“I was there.””

My mother’s face changed.

“You were?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Daniel’s voice broke.

“Because I saw what Marcus was capable of.””

The officer looked at him through the phone.

“What did you see?””

A long pause.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I saw Marcus meet with someone that night.””

My mother stepped closer.

“Who?””

Daniel answered:

“The person who actually cut the brakes.””

I held my breath.

“Who was it?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then:

“Someone who has been standing beside Lena her entire life.””

Everyone turned.

May you like

Slowly.

Toward Vanessa.
