Chapter 6: The Face In The Video

The image sharpened.

A woman stood beside Marcus.

Her hand rested on his shoulder.

Her voice came through the speakers.

“Marcus, we don’t have much time.””

I knew that voice.

Everyone in the room knew that voice.

Vanessa.

My knees weakened.

“No.””

The word came out as a whisper.

My father looked at me.

“Lena—”

“Don’t.””

I stepped away from him.

“Don’t say my name like you still care.””

The officer paused the video.

My mother entered the room moments later.

One look at my face told her something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I couldn’t answer.

I just pointed at the screen.

Her eyes moved to the image.

Then everything changed.

She stopped breathing.

For years, she had carried anger.

Pain.

Fear.

But now I saw something else.

Betrayal.

“Vanessa.””

The name barely left her mouth.

My mother turned slowly.

Vanessa was standing behind the officers.

She had followed us.

And she knew.

She knew what we had seen.

“I can explain,” Vanessa said.

My mother laughed softly.

“Explain?””

Her voice shook.

“You were there.””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“I was.””

The room exploded.

My father immediately spoke.

“Vanessa, don’t.””

But she ignored him.

“I was there.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She wiped her face.

“Because Marcus told me your mother was dangerous.””

My mother stepped forward.

“And you believed him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I did.””

Her voice cracked.

“I was young. I was scared. I thought I was helping.””

“Helping him destroy my life?””

Vanessa looked down.

“No.””

“Then why did you stand there?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Because I didn’t know he would hurt you.””

My mother stared at her.

“But he did.””

Nobody argued.

Because it was true.

The officer restarted the video.

This time, we watched carefully.

Marcus was pacing.

My mother was sitting in a chair.

She looked terrified.

But alive.

Marcus held a folder.

“You signed the wrong papers.””

My mother’s voice shook.

“I’m not giving you custody of Lena.””

Marcus smiled.

“That’s not your choice anymore.””

The video ended.

Everyone stayed silent.

My father looked at me.

“I was protecting you.””

I turned.

“From my mother?””

“Yes.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He stood.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then make me understand.””

He looked desperate.

“I needed control.””

The honesty shocked even him.

The room went quiet.

Then the officer said:

“That’s enough.””

Marcus sat down.

But my mind was stuck on one thing.

The folder.

The papers.

The custody documents.

I looked at my mother.

“Mom?””

She looked at me.

“What?””

“What was he trying to make you sign?””

Her face changed.

And I knew immediately.

She had hidden something.

“Mom.””

She looked away.

“Lena…”

My heart sank.

“What aren’t you telling me?””

She sat down slowly.

“I found out Marcus had changed your birth records.””

The room froze.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“He wasn’t just trying to take custody.””

I felt dizzy.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

She reached into the evidence bag.

Pulled out an old document.

And placed it in front of me.

The paper was yellowed.

The ink faded.

But one sentence was still clear.

A sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Lena Hale is not the biological daughter of Marcus Hale.””

I stared at the words.

The world went silent.

My father looked away.

Vanessa started crying.

And my mother whispered the sentence that destroyed everything I thought I knew.

“Your father wasn’t trying to hide me from you.””

May you like

She touched the document.

“He was trying to hide who your real father was.””
