Chapter 3: The Story My Mother Never Told Me

The police separated everyone after graduation.

My classmates were sent outside.

Parents were asked to leave.

The celebration that was supposed to end with pictures and hugs became a crime scene.

My diploma folder sat abandoned on the stage floor.

Nobody picked it up.

I sat in an empty classroom with my mother while officers interviewed Marcus and Vanessa down the hallway.

The fluorescent lights buzzed above us.

For the first time in four years, I was alone with my mother.

But somehow, I felt like I was meeting her for the first time.

She reached for my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

I stared at our fingers.

“For what?””

“For not finding a way back sooner.””

I looked at her bruised wrists.

“You were alive.””

She nodded.

“And you thought I was dead.””

The pain in her voice was worse than anger.

I wanted to be happy.

I wanted to throw my arms around her and pretend everything was fixed.

But there were too many questions.

“Why didn’t you tell me anything?””

She looked down.

“Because Marcus controlled everything.””

“That doesn’t explain four years.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

The silence between us felt heavy.

Finally, she opened the evidence envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

A life I never knew existed.

“I found out Marcus was hiding money.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He had accounts I didn’t know about. He was moving money away from our family business.””

I stared at the papers.

“Why would that matter?””

My mother looked at me.

“Because when I confronted him, he became someone I didn’t recognize.””

A memory surfaced.

I was thirteen.

I remembered my parents fighting in the kitchen.

I remembered Marcus shouting.

I remembered my mother crying.

But the next morning, my father had smiled and made pancakes.

He told me everything was fine.

My mother continued.

“He told me if I exposed him, he would take you away from me.””

I swallowed.

“Dad said that?””

She nodded.

“He said nobody would believe me.””

The classroom door opened.

An officer stepped inside.

“Lena?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

He hesitated.

“There’s something you need to hear.””

My mother immediately stood.

“What is it?””

The officer looked between us.

“We found something in Mr. Hale’s vehicle.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

He held up a small evidence bag.

Inside was an old photograph.

My photograph.

A picture of me when I was ten years old.

On the back was writing.

The officer turned it around.

My mother read it first.

Then her face changed.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

She didn’t answer.

I took the photo.

The handwriting was my father’s.

Three words.

Three words that made my hands shake.

“Backup plan: Lena.””

I felt sick.

“No.””

My mother grabbed me.

“Lena.””

“No.””

I pushed the photo away.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Because if it was true, then my father hadn’t just tried to erase my mother.

He had been planning something involving me.

The officer lowered his voice.

“There’s more.””

He handed my mother another document.

She read it.

Then she sat down.

“What?””

She looked at me.

Her face was full of fear.

“Your father had legal documents prepared.””

“What kind of documents?””

She hesitated.

“Documents that would make him your only guardian.””

I stared.

“But I’m eighteen now.””

The officer nodded.

“Yes.””

Then he looked toward the hallway.

“That’s why we need to know why these documents were prepared six months before your birthday.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

Six months before my birthday.

Six months before graduation.

Six months before my life was supposed to change.

I looked toward the hallway where my father was being questioned.

For years, I thought my mother was the person who disappeared.

But suddenly I realized something worse.

Someone had been planning for me to disappear too.

Then Vanessa walked into the doorway.

Her face was covered in tears.

“Lena.””

I stood slowly.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Terrified.

“I need to tell you the truth.””

My mother stepped between us.

“Stay away from her.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I know what Marcus did.””

The room froze.

She wiped her tears.

“And I know why he needed your mother gone.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

May you like

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Because your mother wasn’t the only person who knew what Marcus had done.””
