Chapter 7: The Name Hidden In My Birth Records
The room became completely silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence.
The kind that comes right before something breaks.
I stared at the document sitting on the table.
The words blurred in front of me.
*Lena Hale is not the biological daughter of Marcus Hale.*
I read it again.
And again.
Like somehow the letters would rearrange themselves into something less impossible.
They didn’t.
My entire life had been built on one person’s version of the truth.
My father.
The man who told me bedtime stories.
The man who taught me to drive.
The man who held my hand when I thought I had lost my mother forever.
None of it made sense anymore.
I looked at him.
“Is this real?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
That was the answer.
“Dad?””
His jaw tightened.
“Lena, there are things you don’t understand.””
I stepped back.
“Stop saying that.””
My voice shook.
“Everyone keeps saying that. My whole life, everyone has been telling me I don’t understand.””
My mother reached for me.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at her.
“You knew?””
She froze.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I found out before everything happened.””
“Before you disappeared?””
She nodded slowly.
My chest tightened.
“So everyone knew except me?””
“No,” she whispered.
“Not everyone.””
I looked between them.
My father.
My mother.
Vanessa.
All the people who had shaped my entire life.
And suddenly I felt like a stranger in my own story.
The officer cleared his throat.
“We need to understand the document.””
My mother nodded.
She opened another folder.
“This was from a private investigator I hired before Marcus attacked me.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Attacked you?””
My mother looked at him.
“You tried to erase me.””
The officer looked at Marcus.
“Let her speak.””
My mother turned back to me.
“Lena, when I discovered Marcus had been hiding money, I started looking into everything.””
She placed more papers on the table.
“His business records. His personal accounts. His old relationships.””
My stomach twisted.
“Old relationships?””
She hesitated.
“Yes.””
I looked at the document again.
“Who is my biological father?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Daniel.””
My head turned.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“Daniel Brooks.””
The name meant nothing.
But the way everyone reacted told me everything.
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She looked at me.
“After I had proof.””
I laughed sadly.
“Proof?””
I pointed around the room.
“My entire life is a secret, Mom.””
The words hurt her.
I saw it.
But I couldn’t stop.
“I thought you died.””
She looked down.
“I know.””
“And now I find out the man I called Dad isn’t even my father.””
My voice broke.
“Do you understand what that feels like?””
My mother’s tears fell.
“No.””
She whispered.
“But I know what it feels like to lose you.””
That stopped me.
Because she wasn’t defending herself.
She was just hurting.
The officer picked up the document.
“Who is Daniel Brooks?””
My mother looked toward the window.
“He was someone I knew before Marcus.””
Marcus suddenly spoke.
“Someone she cheated with.””
Everyone turned.
My mother’s face hardened.
“That is not the truth.””
“Isn’t it?””
“No.””
Marcus leaned forward.
“You want to tell Lena everything? Tell her.””
My mother looked at him.
“Tell her what?””
“That you left me.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
My father smiled.
A cold, angry smile.
“Tell her how you were going to leave our family.””
My mother shook her head.
“You’re twisting it.””
“Am I?””
The officer stepped between them.
“Enough.””
But I couldn’t look away.
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“Did you leave?””
A painful silence.
Then she nodded.
“For one night.””
My stomach dropped.
“One night?””
“I found out something about Marcus.””
She looked at him.
“I was going to confront Daniel.””
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Fear returned.
“Because Daniel wasn’t just your biological father.””
I waited.
Nobody spoke.
Then my mother said:
“He was the person who helped Marcus build his empire.””
The room went cold.
My father looked furious.
“Stop.””
My mother ignored him.
“Daniel knew everything.””
The officer frowned.
“Everything about what?””
My mother opened the final folder.
Inside was a photograph.
Three men standing together.
Marcus.
Daniel.
And a third person.
My eyes moved to the third face.
I recognized him immediately.
Because I had seen him just hours earlier.
At graduation.
He was one of the parents who came to watch.
One of the people who clapped when my name was called.
My mother whispered:
“Marcus wasn’t working alone.””
The officer took the photograph.
“Who is the third man?””
My mother looked at me.
May you like
And her answer made my blood freeze.
“Your principal’s father.””
