Chapter 11: The Confession Nobody Expected

Vanessa looked like she had been waiting for this moment.

Not because she wanted it.

Because she knew it was coming.

“No.””

The word came from her mouth before anyone accused her.

My mother stepped forward.

“Was it you?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No.””

“Then why did Daniel say that?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

And that was when I understood.

She wasn’t afraid of us.

She was afraid of him.

“I didn’t cut the brakes.””

Her voice cracked.

“But I know who did.””

The room went silent.

The officer moved closer.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at Marcus.

“He did.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Careful.””

Vanessa flinched.

I saw it.

The fear.

The years of intimidation.

The same fear my mother carried.

“You threatened me,” Vanessa whispered.

Marcus laughed.

“Don’t pretend you’re innocent.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I never said I was.””

That shocked me.

She looked at me.

“I made terrible choices.””

I said nothing.

“I met Marcus when I was twenty-seven.””

She swallowed.

“He was charming. Successful. He knew exactly what to say.””

My mother looked away.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me his wife had abandoned him. He told me he was raising a daughter alone.””

My stomach tightened.

“You believed him.””

“Yes.””

She looked ashamed.

“I believed everything.””

The officer asked:

“When did you realize he was lying?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“When I saw the room.””

The room.

The cabin.

My mother’s prison.

“I found photos.””

She wiped her tears.

“Photos of Lena. Of her mother. Notes about their schedules.””

My skin went cold.

“He was watching us.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He was planning.””

Marcus stood.

“Stop.””

The officer immediately ordered him back down.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me Lena needed protection.””

I looked at her.

“And you helped him.””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

More than another lie would have.

“I helped him convince people your mother was unstable.””

My mother closed her eyes.

Vanessa cried.

“I signed statements.””

The room became heavy.

“You helped destroy her.””

“Yes.””

She looked at my mother.

“I’m sorry.””

My mother stared at her.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I don’t expect you to.””

Then she looked at me.

“But I need you to know something.””

I waited.

“Marcus was never planning to stop with your mother.””

The officer frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Vanessa reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small notebook.

“He kept records.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“What did you take?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“He wrote everything down.””

My heart pounded.

“Everything?””

She nodded.

“Names. Payments. Plans.””

The officer took the notebook.

“Where did you get this?””

“His office.””

Marcus laughed.

“You stole from me?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I saved myself.””

The officer opened the notebook.

The first few pages were numbers.

Dates.

Names.

Then he stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the notebook around.

There was a list.

A handwritten list.

The officer read the top line.

“People who know too much.””

My mother covered her mouth.

The next names were visible.

Daniel Brooks.

Lena Brooks.

Vanessa Cole.

My heart stopped.

Then I saw the final name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

But Marcus did.

His entire body went still.

The officer looked at him.

“Who is Richard Cole?””

Vanessa went pale.

Because Richard Cole was her father.

The principal’s father.

The man in the photograph.

May you like

And apparently…

the final person Marcus wanted gone.
