Chapter 5: My Father’s Last Lie

The interview room smelled like old coffee and cleaning chemicals.

My father sat behind the table.

Without the expensive suit.

Without the confident smile.

Without the image he had spent years building.

He looked smaller.

Older.

But when he saw me enter, his expression changed immediately.

Concern.

The same expression he used whenever I was sick.

Whenever I needed him.

For a second, my heart betrayed me.

For a second, I wanted to believe.

“Lena.””

I stayed standing.

“You have a lot to explain.””

He sighed.

“I know this looks bad.””

I almost laughed.

“Looks bad?””

He leaned forward.

“Your mother is manipulating you.””

There it was.

The same sentence.

The same strategy.

Blame someone else.

I stared at him.

“She was locked away.””

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know the full story.””

“Then tell me.””

Silence.

A long silence.

“Tell me why you told me she died.””

Marcus looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

He didn’t answer.

“From what, Dad?””

His eyes lifted.

“From the truth.””

I felt a chill.

“What truth?””

He leaned closer.

“Your mother was unstable.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“She hurt people.””

“No.””

“She had problems.””

“No.””

My voice broke.

“She loved me.””

For the first time, something changed in his face.

Guilt.

Only for a second.

Then it disappeared.

“Love isn’t always enough.””

I stared at him.

I couldn’t recognize the person sitting across from me.

The man who taught me how to swim.

The man who cheered at my soccer games.

The man who held my hand at my mother’s funeral.

A stranger had been wearing his face.

“Did you cut her brakes?””

His eyes moved away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

“Oh my God.””

“Lena—”

“Did you?””

He stood.

“I never wanted things to go this far.””

The room seemed to stop.

The officer outside immediately entered.

“Mr. Hale, sit down.””

Marcus ignored him.

“Your mother ruined everything.””

I felt my hands go cold.

“Ruined what?””

He looked at me.

“Our family.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He was angry now.

The mask was gone.

“You think you know everything because she walked in dramatically at your graduation?””

His voice rose.

“You don’t know what she did.””

“Then tell me.””

He smiled bitterly.

“She found out about the money.””

I froze.

The same thing my mother said.

“The business?””

He nodded.

“She was going to destroy me.””

“So you tried to kill her?””

His silence answered.

The officer stepped closer.

“Mr. Hale, choose your words carefully.””

Marcus sat back down.

Then he said something I would never forget.

“I didn’t try to kill her.””

I stared.

“I tried to scare her.””

My mother’s bruises flashed in my mind.

The years she lost.

The fear she carried.

“You locked her away.””

His eyes hardened.

“She made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

Marcus looked at me.

And then he smiled.

“She trusted someone.””

My stomach dropped.

“What does that mean?””

Before he could answer, the door opened.

An officer entered holding a tablet.

“Mr. Hale, we recovered the flash drive.””

Marcus’s face changed.

The first real fear I had seen.

“What?””

The officer looked at me.

“It contains financial records and several recordings.””

Marcus stood suddenly.

“No.””

The officer continued.

“And there is a video file.””

My father went completely still.

“What video?””

The officer looked down at the tablet.

“A recording from the night your mother disappeared.””

My heart pounded.

My father’s face lost all color.

The officer pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

A woman’s voice whispered.

“Please, Marcus. Lena is your daughter too.””

My breath stopped.

My mother.

Then Marcus’s voice answered.

“You’re the reason she’ll never know the truth.””

The video froze.

The officer looked up.

“There’s more.””

My father closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

He knew what came next.

The officer continued:

“The video shows someone else in the room.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Who?””

The officer turned the tablet toward me.

The image loaded.

A third person appeared.

And when I saw the face on the screen, I felt my entire body go numb.

May you like

Because the person standing beside my father that night…

was someone I had trusted my whole life.
