Chapter 13: The Brother Who Survived

The voice on the phone was impossible.

A ghost.

A memory.

A person who was supposed to be gone.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody even breathed.

I stared at the phone in the officer’s hand.

“Evan?””

The name came out like a question.

The voice on the other end shook.

“Yes.””

My knees weakened.

“You’re alive?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel started crying.

Not quietly.

Not trying to hide it.

After eleven years of believing his son was gone, he finally heard his voice again.

“Evan,” Daniel whispered.

The young man on the phone went silent.

“Dad?””

That single word destroyed everyone in the room.

Daniel sat down.

His hands covered his face.

“I thought you were dead.””

“I know.””

Evan’s voice cracked.

“I thought you were too.””

The officer took control of the situation.

“Evan, where are you?””

A pause.

“I can’t say.””

The officer frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Marcus is listening.””

Everyone looked at my father.

Marcus had gone completely still.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Terrified.

The officer noticed.

“Mr. Hale?””

Marcus looked away.

Evan continued.

“He knows I’m alive now.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

Evan was quiet.

Then:

“Because I found out what he was planning.””

I stepped closer to the phone.

“What planning?””

My brother hesitated.

Then said:

“Everything.””

The word felt heavy.

“He planned your mother’s disappearance.””

My mother closed her eyes.

“He planned my father’s downfall.””

Daniel looked toward the phone.

“And yours?””

Another pause.

“Yes.””

I felt cold.

“What did he want from me?””

Evan didn’t answer immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was softer.

“He wanted you to inherit everything.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“The companies. The money. The accounts.””

I looked at Marcus.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does.””

Evan sighed.

“Because Marcus wasn’t protecting his empire.””

He paused.

“He was trying to transfer it.””

The officer looked confused.

“Transfer it to Lena?””

“Yes.””

My father finally spoke.

“Don’t listen to him.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus looked desperate.

“You don’t know what you’re hearing.””

I stared at him.

“You were going to give me everything?””

His silence was enough.

Evan continued.

“Marcus created a plan where Lena would become the public owner of everything.””

“Why?””

“Because nobody would suspect her.””

The room went quiet.

I felt sick.

“My entire life was a cover.””

“Yes.””

Evan’s voice softened.

“He raised you because you were useful to him.””

The words hurt.

Even though I knew they were true.

Some part of me still wanted to reject them.

Because accepting them meant accepting that my childhood had been built on manipulation.

My mother moved beside me.

“You are not what he made you feel like.””

I looked at her.

She held my hand.

“You are my daughter.””

I nodded, but tears blurred my vision.

The officer spoke again.

“Evan, you mentioned evidence.””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

A pause.

“In Lena’s old bedroom.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“The hiding place was built before you were born.””

My mother looked shocked.

“I never knew.””

“Marcus didn’t either.””

Evan continued.

“He thought he controlled everything.””

A bitter laugh.

“He always thought he was smarter than everyone.””

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Did you know about this?””

Marcus said nothing.

The answer was obvious.

The officer motioned to another officer.

“We need to secure the house.””

Marcus suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He pushed past the chair and ran toward the door.

The room exploded.

“Stop!””

Officers chased him.

For a moment, I saw the man who had terrified everyone for years.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just a man running from the truth.

The officer caught him before he reached the hallway.

Marcus struggled.

“Lena!””

I froze.

Even then.

Even after everything.

He still called my name like he was my father.

“Lena, listen to me!””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

His face changed.

“You deserve to know why I did it.””

I almost laughed.

“Now?””

He looked at me.

“Because I loved you.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded real.

But love wasn’t supposed to look like this.

It wasn’t supposed to leave bruises.

It wasn’t supposed to erase people.

The officer pulled him away.

And as Marcus disappeared down the hallway, Evan’s voice came through the phone.

“Lena.””

I answered.

“Yes?””

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

A long silence.

Then he whispered:

“The evidence in your room doesn’t just prove what Marcus did.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

May you like

Evan took a shaky breath.

“It proves why he chose you.””
