Chapter 9: The Truth About Robert’s Final Night
The hospital hallway felt like it had disappeared.
There was only one thing I could see.
Andre.
My son.
The little boy who once held my hand crossing the street.
The man who had just admitted he knew something about his father's final days.
I wanted to believe him.
I needed to.
But trust was something fragile.
And too many people had broken it.
"Andre.""
He looked at me.
Tears filled his eyes.
"Mom, please.""
"Tell me.""
He shook his head.
"I didn't help them.""
"Then why did Vanessa say you did?""
"I don't know.""
I stepped back.
"That's not enough anymore.""
The pain on his face was real.
But so was mine.
Detective Harris picked up Andre's phone.
"The call ended.""
He looked at the screen.
"No trace.""
Dr. Pierce leaned against the wall.
"Vanessa planned this carefully.""
I looked at him.
"You knew all along.""
His expression hardened.
"Yes.""
Anger rose inside me.
"You let me believe my husband died naturally.""
Dr. Pierce looked down.
"I was afraid.""
"Afraid?""
I laughed bitterly.
"My husband died.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
My voice broke.
"You went home after treating him. I went home without him.""
Nobody spoke.
Then Dr. Pierce said quietly:
"I was afraid because Robert knew too much.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
He looked at Andre.
"Your father discovered the financial scheme before he died.""
Rebecca whispered:
"With Thomas.""
Dr. Pierce nodded.
"Thomas and Vanessa were moving money through fake accounts. Danielle became involved later.""
Danielle looked away.
I looked at her.
"Later?""
She swallowed.
"I met Thomas after Robert died.""
Andre stared.
"You told me you didn't know him.""
"I lied.""
The honesty hurt more than another excuse.
"Why?""
She closed her eyes.
"Because I was desperate.""
I shook my head.
"Desperate people make mistakes. They don't destroy families.""
She didn't argue.
Maybe because she knew I was right.
Detective Harris opened the folder Dr. Pierce gave him.
"There is something here.""
Everyone looked.
He pulled out a document.
"Medication authorization.""
He studied it.
"Robert's final prescription change.""
I moved closer.
"Who signed it?""
The detective looked up.
And his expression changed.
"The signature belongs to Dr. Pierce.""
My heart sank.
Everyone looked at him.
"You signed it?""
Dr. Pierce nodded.
"Yes.""
Andre stepped forward.
"Then you did it.""
"No.""
The doctor looked exhausted.
"I signed the change because I was ordered to.""
"By who?""
He hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
"Say it.""
Dr. Pierce looked at me.
"Your husband.""
Everyone froze.
"What?""
"He asked me to change the medication.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Dr. Pierce pulled out another paper.
"Robert was trying to expose the fraud. He knew they were watching him.""
He placed the paper in Detective Harris's hand.
"This is his handwritten request.""
Detective Harris read it.
Then looked shocked.
"Why would Robert ask for that?""
Dr. Pierce answered:
"Because he believed someone was poisoning him.""
Silence.
The word hung in the air.
Poisoning.
My stomach turned.
"My husband knew?""
Dr. Pierce nodded.
"He believed Vanessa had access to his medications.""
Andre looked at Danielle.
"Then why did you say he was dying?""
Danielle looked horrified.
"I didn't know.""
But nobody responded.
Because none of us knew what to believe anymore.
Then Detective Harris found something else.
A small note attached to the medication records.
He read it quietly.
Then his face changed.
"What?""
He looked at me.
"This note is from Robert.""
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?""
He handed it to me.
I recognized my husband's handwriting.
*Margaret, if Andre ever learns the truth, he must know this was never his fault.*
I stopped.
The next line made my hands shake.
*He was manipulated. But he was also the only person who could stop them.*
I looked at Andre.
"What does that mean?""
He looked confused.
"I don't know.""
Then I saw another sentence.
*Andre has the original recording. He always has.*
Everyone turned.
Andre went completely still.
My heart dropped.
"Andre.""
He whispered:
"I thought it was destroyed.""
"What was?""
The recording.
The one Robert made.
The one Vanessa feared.
Andre slowly reached into his jacket.
And pulled out a small device.
"I kept it.""
My breath caught.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
He looked at me with tears in his eyes.
"Because Dad made me promise.""
"Promise what?""
He looked at the recorder.
Then pressed play.
Robert's voice filled the hallway.
"If you are hearing this, then my son finally found the courage to tell the truth.""
Andre closed his eyes.
Robert continued:
"Margaret, there is something I need you to know about the person who started all of this.""
A pause.
Then his voice became softer.
"The person who betrayed us was not Danielle.""
Everyone held their breath.
Robert said one final sentence.
"It was someone who has been protecting our family for years.""
The recording clicked off.
Nobody spoke.
Then Detective Harris's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed immediately.
"What?""
A pause.
Then:
"You're sure?""
He looked at us.
"We found Vanessa.""
"Where?""
His expression darkened.
"At Robert Bennett's old storage unit.""
My blood ran cold.
Because that storage unit had been locked since the day my husband died.
And nobody had the key.
May you like
Except one person.
The person Robert trusted most.
