Chapter 14: The Truth Robert Left Behind

The video started with darkness.

A hospital room.

A shaky camera angle.

Then my voice.

My own voice.

"Robert, please wake up.""

I covered my mouth.

"No.""

I remembered that night.

The fear.

The machines.

The doctors telling me his condition was worsening.

But this video showed something different.

The camera moved closer.

Robert was awake.

His eyes were open.

And he was holding my hand.

Andre stepped closer to the screen.

"Dad was conscious?""

Dr. Pierce nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

The video continued.

Robert whispered:

"Margaret, listen to me.""

My recorded voice cried.

"I don't understand.""

Robert looked toward the camera.

"I need you to remember this.""

The screen shook.

Then Robert said:

"Someone is trying to make you believe you hurt me.""

Everyone froze.

The video paused.

Detective Harris looked at me.

"What does this mean?""

I couldn't answer.

Because I remembered something.

A memory I had buried.

That night.

Robert had grabbed my hand.

He had said something.

Something I never understood.

I thought it was because he was confused.

Because he was sick.

But now...

I remembered.

"Robert told me to leave.""

Andre looked at me.

"What?""

"He told me to go home.""

I closed my eyes.

"He said someone would use me if I stayed.""

Rebecca whispered:

"He knew.""

The video continued.

Robert looked directly at the camera.

"If anything happens, don't blame Margaret.""

A shadow appeared near the door.

Someone was standing outside.

Robert looked afraid.

Then he whispered:

"They are here.""

The video ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Detective Harris looked at Dr. Pierce.

"You had this the entire time?""

Dr. Pierce nodded.

"Robert gave it to me.""

"Why hide it?""

"Because I thought revealing it would put Margaret in more danger.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone kept protecting me by hiding the truth.""

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

The secrets.

The lies.

The protection.

They all became another kind of damage.

Then Andre stepped forward.

"I need to tell Mom something.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He swallowed.

"The night Dad died...""

He paused.

"I wasn't there by accident.""

My heart sank.

"What does that mean?""

"Victor called me.""

Everyone went silent.

"He told me Dad needed help.""

Andre looked ashamed.

"I went because I trusted him.""

"And?""

"I saw Dad arguing with someone.""

"Who?""

Andre looked at the floor.

"I couldn't see their face.""

I waited.

"Then what happened?""

"He told me to leave.""

"Who did?""

Andre looked up.

And whispered:

"Dad.""

The room became silent.

"Your father told you to leave?""

Andre nodded.

"He said, 'Don't let them use you.''"

My eyes filled with tears.

He had been protecting Andre too.

Even at the end.

Especially at the end.

Then Detective Harris's phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed.

"What?""

Everyone watched.

Then he looked at me.

"We found Victor.""

My heart jumped.

"Where?""

"He returned to Atlanta.""

"Why?""

The detective hesitated.

"Because he wants to surrender.""

Nobody understood.

"That doesn't make sense.""

Detective Harris looked serious.

"He said he has proof of who actually killed Robert Bennett.""

The room went silent.

"Who?""

The detective looked at the screen.

"He's waiting for you.""

I frowned.

"For me?""

"He specifically requested Margaret Bennett.""

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Why?""

Detective Harris didn't answer.

Because he didn't need to.

Victor had already sent another message.

A single sentence.

*Margaret, I owe you the truth about your husband.*

May you like

Then another message appeared.

*And I owe you an apology for what I did to your family.*
