Chapter 12: The Person in the Recording

The video was grainy.

Black and white.

But I could still recognize my own house.

My own front door.

My own living room.

I sat in the police station watching the screen while everyone stood behind me.

The timestamp appeared.

Three days before Robert died.

I held my breath.

The door opened.

A person entered.

At first, I couldn't see the face.

Only the shape.

The walk.

The way they moved.

Then the person stepped into the light.

And my heart stopped.

"That's impossible.""

Andre looked at the screen.

"Mom...""

I couldn't speak.

Because the person in the video was someone I knew.

Someone who had been there that night.

Someone who had comforted me afterward.

It was Danielle.

Detective Harris paused the video.

"Are you sure?""

I nodded slowly.

"Yes.""

Danielle closed her eyes.

"I told you.""

Everyone looked at her.

"You knew?""

She nodded.

"I knew I had been there.""

Andre turned.

"What?""

Danielle looked broken.

"I didn't tell you because I was ashamed.""

"Why were you there?""

She swallowed.

"Thomas sent me.""

The room went silent.

My anger returned.

"So you were involved.""

"Yes.""

She didn't deny it.

"But not the way you think.""

"Then explain.""

Danielle looked at the screen.

"I went there to steal documents.""

Andre stepped back.

"You what?""

She cried.

"I thought they were just financial papers.""

My voice was cold.

"You were helping them.""

"I know.""

She looked at me.

"I was wrong.""

Detective Harris played the video again.

Danielle entered Robert's office.

She searched drawers.

Then she stopped.

A few minutes later, another person entered.

The person Danielle looked afraid of.

The person she immediately stepped away from.

The camera angle changed.

The face appeared.

Everyone froze.

It was Dr. Pierce.

But he wasn't alone.

He was carrying a medical bag.

Andre whispered:

"Oh my God.""

The video continued.

Dr. Pierce handed Danielle something.

A folder.

Then he said something.

The audio was faint.

Detective Harris increased the volume.

Dr. Pierce's voice came through.

"You need to make sure Margaret signs everything.""

Danielle answered:

"What about Robert?""

Dr. Pierce looked toward the bedroom.

"He won't be a problem much longer.""

My stomach turned.

The video stopped.

Nobody spoke.

Then Dr. Pierce looked at us.

His face had lost all confidence.

"I can explain.""

Detective Harris stepped forward.

"Try.""

Dr. Pierce sighed.

"I was helping Robert.""

Nobody believed him.

"Helping him by telling Danielle to make Margaret sign documents?""

"I was pretending.""

I stared.

"Pretending?""

"Yes.""

He looked at me.

"Robert suspected everyone. He needed someone inside their operation.""

I shook my head.

"And you chose Danielle?""

Dr. Pierce nodded.

"Because they trusted her.""

Danielle looked stunned.

"So you used me?""

"Yes.""

The honesty was cruel.

She looked away.

Detective Harris turned back to the video.

"Then why did you bring a medical bag?""

Dr. Pierce went silent.

That silence was everything.

"What was inside?""

He didn't answer.

The detective's expression hardened.

"What was inside?""

Finally, Dr. Pierce whispered:

"Medication.""

My blood ran cold.

"Robert's medication?""

He nodded.

Andre stepped forward.

"You changed his prescription.""

Dr. Pierce closed his eyes.

"Yes.""

The room exploded.

Andre grabbed the table.

"You killed my father.""

"No.""

Dr. Pierce looked at him.

"I tried to save him.""

Nobody understood.

Then he reached into his pocket.

Pulled out a small flash drive.

"I recorded everything.""

Detective Harris took it.

"What is this?""

"Proof.""

"Proof of what?""

Dr. Pierce looked at me.

"That Robert wasn't the only target.""

A chill ran through me.

"What do you mean?""

He pointed at the screen.

"Look at the date.""

I did.

Three days before Robert died.

Then I noticed something.

The camera recorded another event.

The next night.

After everyone thought Robert was asleep.

A second person entered the house.

Not Danielle.

Not Vanessa.

Not Thomas.

Someone else.

The video loaded.

The person walked directly toward Robert's bedroom.

Then turned toward the camera.

Their face appeared.

And I felt the entire world collapse.

Because it was someone I had trusted for decades.

Someone who had always said they loved me.

The person on the screen smiled.

And whispered:

"Goodnight, Margaret.""

It was me.

A recording of my own voice.

But I had never said those words.

I looked at Detective Harris.

"What is happening?""

He stared at the screen.

Then said the words that changed everything.

"Mrs. Bennett...""

May you like

He pointed at the footage.

"Someone has been using your identity.""
