Chapter 8: The Son Who Kept the Secret
Dr. Pierce stepped into the hallway slowly.
He looked older than I remembered.
The man who had once stood beside Robert's hospital bed with confidence now looked exhausted.
But his eyes were the same.
Cold.
Calculating.
"Margaret," he said.
Detective Harris moved forward.
"Dr. Pierce, you need to come with us.""
The doctor smiled.
"Of course.""
That surprised everyone.
He wasn't running.
He wasn't fighting.
He looked almost relieved.
"Before you arrest me," he said, "you should ask your son what happened that night.""
Every eye turned toward Andre.
I felt my chest tighten.
"Andre.""
He closed his eyes.
"Mom...""
"Tell me.""
The hallway became silent.
Even Dr. Pierce watched him.
Andre looked like a child again.
Not the grown man who had his own family.
Not the man who had signed papers without reading them.
Just my son.
"I went to see Dad.""
My heart sank.
"When?""
"The night before he died.""
"Why?""
He looked down.
"Because he called me.""
I stared.
"He called you?""
Andre nodded.
"He sounded scared.""
My hands tightened.
"What did he say?""
Andre swallowed.
"He told me Danielle was dangerous.""
Everyone froze.
Danielle looked away.
Andre continued.
"He said she was working with someone.""
I whispered:
"Then why didn't you tell me?""
A tear fell from his eye.
"Because Dad asked me not to.""
I felt hurt.
Confused.
"Why?""
"Because he thought if Danielle knew he suspected her, she would destroy everything.""
I shook my head.
"So you protected a secret while I spent years believing nothing happened?""
"I was trying to protect you.""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"You were protecting yourself.""
Andre looked devastated.
And I hated that part of me still wanted to comfort him.
Because he was my son.
But I was tired of being the only person in the room who didn't know the truth.
Detective Harris looked at him.
"What happened during that visit?""
Andre took a deep breath.
"Dad gave me something.""
"What?""
"A recording.""
Everyone looked at him.
"A recording of Danielle and Vanessa.""
My heart raced.
"Where is it?""
Andre's face changed.
"I don't know.""
"You don't know?""
"He told me to keep it safe.""
"And did you?""
Silence.
That was the answer.
Dr. Pierce suddenly laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
"You see?""
He shook his head.
"The Bennett family always destroys itself.""
Detective Harris stepped toward him.
"Explain your involvement.""
The doctor's smile disappeared.
"I treated Robert.""
"That's not an answer.""
"No.""
Dr. Pierce looked at me.
"It's the beginning.""
He reached into his coat and pulled out a folder.
Everyone tensed.
"These are Robert's original medical records.""
Rebecca gasped.
"How do you have those?""
Dr. Pierce ignored her.
"I kept them because I knew one day someone would come looking.""
I stared.
"Why?""
His expression changed.
"Because Robert wasn't dying when everyone thought he was.""
The words hit me.
"What?""
Andre stepped forward.
"Are you saying my father wasn't terminal?""
Dr. Pierce nodded.
"He was sick.""
He paused.
"But he wasn't going to die that week.""
My knees almost gave out.
"What are you saying?""
The doctor looked directly at me.
"Someone changed his medication.""
The hallway went silent.
Detective Harris took the folder.
"Who?""
Dr. Pierce looked toward Danielle.
Then toward Andre.
And finally at me.
"The person who ordered the medication change was...""
He stopped.
A loud alarm suddenly sounded.
Everyone turned.
The hospital doors locked automatically.
Emergency lights flashed red.
A voice came over the speakers.
"Security breach detected.""
Detective Harris grabbed his radio.
"What is happening?""
Dr. Pierce looked terrified for the first time.
"No.""
"What?""
He stared toward the exit.
"Someone knows I'm talking.""
Then every phone in the hallway received a notification.
Mine included.
A video appeared.
It was a recording.
Robert.
Alive.
Sitting in his office.
Speaking directly to the camera.
My breath caught.
Because I had never seen this video before.
Robert looked tired.
But clear.
"Margaret," he said.
"If you are watching this, then they failed to stop you.""
Tears filled my eyes.
His voice.
After all these years.
His voice.
Then Robert continued.
"But there is one thing you need to know.""
He looked directly into the camera.
"Do not trust the person standing closest to you.""
The video stopped.
Everyone froze.
Slowly...
I looked around.
Dr. Pierce.
Rebecca.
Danielle.
And Andre.
My son looked terrified.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
A voice spoke through the speaker.
A voice I recognized.
Vanessa.
"Andre.""
He went pale.
"Where did you get that video?""
Nobody moved.
Vanessa continued:
"Because your father recorded it before he died.""
A pause.
Then:
"And he recorded the part where you helped us.""
Andre dropped the phone.
I stared at my son.
"No...""
But Vanessa's voice was still coming through.
"You should have told your mother the truth three years ago.""
My heart stopped.
Three years ago?
Robert died four years ago.
Meaning whatever happened...
May you like
Started before his death.
And my son had been hiding it from me all this time.
