Chapter 7: The Doctor’s Hidden File

The message from Dr. Alan Pierce stayed on my screen for almost a full minute.

*Margaret, stop searching for the truth before your son learns what you did to his father.*

I read it again.

Then again.

My fingers went cold.

"What did you do to my father?""

Andre’s voice broke the silence.

I looked up.

He wasn’t angry.

That almost made it worse.

He looked afraid.

"I don't know," I whispered.

But deep inside, a small part of me wondered if there was something I had forgotten.

Something from those terrible final weeks.

Grief could distort memories.

Pain could hide details.

Detective Harris noticed my expression.

"Mrs. Bennett, did Dr. Pierce ever accuse you of anything before?""

I shook my head.

"No.""

"Did he ever mention your husband's medical records?""

"No.""

The detective studied me.

"Then this message is likely intimidation.""

Danielle laughed quietly from across the room.

Everyone looked at her.

"What?"" Andre asked.

She wiped her eyes.

"Dr. Pierce doesn't threaten people unless he is scared.""

The room became silent.

I looked at her.

"You know him?""

She hesitated.

Then nodded.

"Yes.""

Andre's face tightened.

"Of course you do.""

"Andre, listen.""

"No.""

His voice cracked.

"You knew Thomas. You knew Vanessa. Now you know the doctor who treated Dad?""

Danielle looked down.

"I didn't know how deep it went.""

"You keep saying that.""

"I know.""

For the first time, she didn't defend herself.

She accepted the anger.

Detective Harris interrupted.

"We don't have time to argue. If Dr. Pierce is involved, we need his files before he can destroy evidence.""

"Where would those files be?"" I asked.

The detective looked at Rebecca.

"You worked at the hospital.""

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"Medical archives.""

She looked worried.

"But getting those records won't be easy.""

"Why?""

"Because Dr. Pierce was the head of the department. He controlled access.""

My stomach tightened.

Someone had spent years building a wall around the truth.

And now we were finally breaking through.

Two hours later, we arrived at the hospital where Robert had spent his final days.

I hadn't been back since his funeral.

The hallway looked exactly the same.

Same white walls.

Same quiet footsteps.

Same smell of disinfectant.

But I wasn't the same woman who left this place years ago.

Back then, I was a wife begging doctors to save the man she loved.

Now I was a woman searching for the truth about why he died.

Rebecca led us toward the records department.

"Dr. Pierce always kept physical copies," she whispered.

"Why?""

"Because he didn't trust digital records.""

Detective Harris frowned.

"Or because he wanted control.""

Before we reached the archive room, a voice stopped us.

"Margaret?""

I turned.

A woman in a hospital uniform stood there.

She looked familiar.

Then I recognized her.

"Linda?""

She had been one of Robert's nurses.

Her eyes filled with concern.

"I heard what happened.""

I looked at her.

"What happened?""

She glanced around.

Then lowered her voice.

"Your husband was afraid.""

My heart stopped.

"What?""

Linda looked at Detective Harris.

"Can we talk privately?""

"No," I said.

"Whatever you know, everyone hears it.""

She nodded.

"Two weeks before Robert died, he asked me to make copies of his medication records.""

Rebecca looked at me.

"Why?""

Linda swallowed.

"Because he believed someone was changing his treatment plan.""

Andre stepped forward.

"Changing his medication?""

Linda nodded.

"He said certain decisions didn't make sense.""

My chest tightened.

"Did Dr. Pierce do it?""

Linda looked away.

"I don't know.""

That answer felt worse.

"What do you know?""

She took a breath.

"One night, I walked into Robert's room.""

Her hands trembled.

"He was awake. He told me someone was trying to make him look confused.""

Andre froze.

"What?""

"He said if anyone questioned his mental state after his death, we should check the medication records.""

I closed my eyes.

Robert knew.

He knew someone was preparing this.

But he didn't know how close the danger was.

Then Linda reached into her bag.

"I kept something.""

She pulled out a small envelope.

"I was scared to give it to anyone.""

Inside was a handwritten note.

Robert's handwriting.

My heart broke when I saw it.

*Linda, if anything happens, do not trust Dr. Pierce. He is not acting alone.*

I looked up.

"Not acting alone?""

Linda nodded.

"There was someone else.""

"Who?""

She looked toward Andre.

And her expression changed.

"I don't know if I should say.""

Andre stepped closer.

"You need to.""

Linda whispered:

"The person who visited Robert the night before he died...""

She paused.

"...was your son.""

The world stopped.

I looked at Andre.

He went completely still.

"That's impossible.""

Linda shook her head.

"I remember because Robert looked surprised.""

My voice barely came out.

"Andre?""

He looked at me.

"Mom, I can explain.""

My heart shattered.

Because those were the words people said when the truth was already bad.

"What happened that night?""

Andre opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, the hospital lights suddenly flickered.

Then every computer screen in the hallway went black.

A few seconds later, a message appeared on all of them.

One sentence.

*You should have left the past buried.*

Detective Harris immediately reached for his phone.

"We need to move.""

But Rebecca pointed toward the archive room.

The door was slowly opening.

Nobody was inside.

Or at least...

Nobody we could see.

Then a voice came from the darkness.

"Margaret.""

My blood ran cold.

Because I knew that voice.

May you like

It was Dr. Pierce.

And he wasn't alone.
