Chapter 10: The Key Robert Never Gave Me
The storage unit was exactly how Robert had left it.
That was the first thing I noticed.
Not the police tape.
Not the officers standing outside.
Not Vanessa sitting in the back of a patrol car with her expensive coat wrinkled and her perfect confidence gone.
It was the fact that the place still felt like him.
The same wooden shelves.
The same dusty boxes.
The same old toolbox he refused to throw away because he always said, "You never know when something broken might need fixing.""
I stood outside the unit door, unable to move.
Four years.
Four years since my husband died.
And somehow, a small piece of him had been waiting here the entire time.
Detective Harris stood beside me.
"Mrs. Bennett, are you ready?""
I looked at the open storage unit.
"No.""
He nodded.
"But we need to know what is inside.""
I stepped forward.
Andre followed.
For the first time in days, he didn't try to explain.
He just walked beside me.
Like he used to when he was a child.
Like he was afraid I might disappear.
Inside, the officers searched carefully.
Boxes were labeled in Robert's handwriting.
Tax documents.
Family photos.
Old business records.
Nothing unusual.
Until Rebecca pointed toward a metal cabinet in the corner.
"That wasn't there before.""
Detective Harris walked over.
The cabinet was locked.
He looked at me.
"Do you know the key?""
I shook my head.
"No.""
Then Andre froze.
Everyone noticed.
"What?"" I asked.
He reached into his pocket.
Slowly.
Carefully.
And pulled out a small brass key.
My heart dropped.
"Where did you get that?""
He looked ashamed.
"Dad gave it to me.""
The silence was immediate.
"You had this?""
"Mom...""
"You had the key to this storage unit for four years?""
His eyes filled with regret.
"I was going to tell you.""
"When?""
He looked down.
"I don't know.""
The answer hurt.
Because I was tired of hearing words that meant nothing.
I walked away from him.
Detective Harris took the key.
"Why didn't you open it before?""
Andre swallowed.
"Because Dad told me not to.""
Everyone looked at him.
"He said if I opened the unit too early, someone would know.""
Rebecca frowned.
"Someone like Vanessa?""
Andre nodded.
"Probably.""
Detective Harris unlocked the cabinet.
Inside were three things.
A laptop.
A stack of documents.
And a sealed envelope.
The envelope had my name written on it.
Not Robert's handwriting.
Mine.
I touched it.
"Who wrote this?""
Andre looked at it.
Then whispered:
"Dad.""
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
*Margaret,*
*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you. I am sorry it took this long.*
My vision blurred.
I kept reading.
*I need you to know something important. Andre was never your enemy. He made mistakes, but he was trying to protect us both.*
I looked at my son.
He turned away.
The letter continued.
*The person who betrayed our family is someone we both trusted. Someone who knew our habits. Someone who knew where I kept my documents.*
My hand tightened.
The same words again.
Someone close.
Someone trusted.
Then came the sentence that made my heart stop.
*That person is not Danielle.*
Everyone became silent.
Because we had all assumed the same thing.
Robert knew.
He knew Danielle was only part of the plan.
I kept reading.
*Danielle was recruited because she was easy to manipulate. She wanted security. They promised her a future.*
Danielle lowered her head.
For once, she didn't argue.
The next paragraph was about Vanessa.
*Vanessa was not the mastermind. She was a lawyer following someone else's instructions.*
Detective Harris looked confused.
"Then who?""
I turned the page.
The final section was shorter.
Almost like Robert was afraid he didn't have enough time.
*Margaret, the person behind this knows you better than anyone.*
My breathing became shallow.
*They know your fears. Your routines. Your weaknesses.*
A cold feeling moved through me.
Then I saw the final line.
*They are the person who convinced me I was sick when I was not.*
I looked up.
"Dr. Pierce.""
Rebecca shook her head.
"No.""
Everyone turned.
She pointed at the letter.
"Look at the handwriting.""
I looked closer.
The final words were written differently.
Robert had added them later.
*Do not trust the person who brings you the truth.*
My blood ran cold.
Because suddenly I understood.
Someone had wanted us to find this letter.
Someone had wanted us to believe Dr. Pierce.
Someone had wanted us looking in the wrong direction.
Then the laptop on the table suddenly turned on.
Everyone jumped.
A video began playing automatically.
Robert appeared on the screen.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
"Margaret.""
I covered my mouth.
His voice filled the storage unit.
"If you are seeing this, it means the plan worked.""
Andre whispered:
"Plan?""
Robert continued.
"I knew they would try to destroy my records. I knew they would try to make you look incapable.""
He paused.
"But I also knew they would need someone close to you.""
The video glitched.
Then Robert said:
"The person who helped them is the person who had access to everything.""
The screen froze.
Then a final file appeared.
A name.
A single name.
Everyone stared.
Because it was not Vanessa.
It was not Danielle.
It was not Dr. Pierce.
It was someone none of us expected.
The file was labeled:
*MARGARET'S SISTER — ELAINE BENNETT*
My heart stopped.
I whispered:
"My sister?""
May you like
And then my phone rang.
Elaine's name appeared on the screen.
