Chapter 3: The Letter My Husband Hid
Robert's office smelled exactly the same.
Old books.
Wood polish.
A faint trace of his favorite cologne.
For a moment, I forgot why I was there.
I saw him sitting behind his desk.
Reading the newspaper.
Complaining about the coffee.
Smiling when he thought I wasn't looking.
Then I remembered.
He was gone.
And someone had been using his absence against me.
Andre stood beside me.
"Mom...""
I looked at him.
His eyes were filled with guilt.
"I should have listened.""
I didn't answer.
Not yet.
Because apologies couldn't erase months of betrayal.
They couldn't erase the way he had watched Danielle disrespect me.
They couldn't erase the fact that I almost lost control at my own birthday party.
But I saw something in his face.
Regret.
Real regret.
"I don't know what to believe anymore," he whispered.
I walked toward Robert's desk.
"Then believe what we find.""
Everything was exactly where I remembered.
His clock.
His pens.
His old leather chair.
But something was wrong.
The drawers were messy.
Robert had been organized.
Extremely organized.
Every bill had a place.
Every document had a label.
Someone had searched through them.
Andre noticed too.
"Someone was here.""
I nodded.
My hands moved across the desk.
Then I remembered something.
Rebecca's words.
The blue folder.
I opened the bottom drawer.
Empty.
I checked the bookshelf.
Nothing.
Then I saw it.
A small scratch behind the framed photo of Robert and me.
I lifted the frame.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a blue folder.
Andre stopped breathing.
"Mom...""
I picked it up.
It was heavier than expected.
On the front, written in Robert's handwriting, were five words.
"FOR MARGARET. OPEN ALONE.""
My heart broke.
Because I knew Robert.
He never wrote dramatic messages.
If he had hidden something, it mattered.
Andre reached toward it.
I stopped him.
"Your father wanted me to open it.""
He nodded slowly.
"I understand.""
I sat down.
My hands shook as I opened the folder.
Inside were copies of medical records.
Bank statements.
Emails.
And one handwritten letter.
The date was two weeks before Robert died.
I unfolded it.
My eyes moved across his words.
"Margaret, if you are reading this, something happened that I was afraid of.""
I covered my mouth.
Andre looked away.
Robert continued.
"I don't believe Danielle is who she says she is.""
The room went silent.
I kept reading.
"She has been asking questions about our accounts, the house, and my insurance. She believes because Andre loves her, he will believe anything she says.""
Andre closed his eyes.
A tear rolled down his face.
"Your father knew," he whispered.
I continued.
"Margaret, I need you to understand something. I never wanted to hurt our son by telling him this. But if Danielle tries to convince anyone you cannot manage your own affairs, show them this letter.""
My hands trembled.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And that was when my entire world changed.
"Because the person who helped Danielle create this plan was not a stranger.""
I stopped.
Andre looked at me.
"What does it say?""
I stared at the page.
The final sentence was written darker, as if Robert had pressed the pen harder.
"The person helping Danielle is someone you trust.""
I looked up.
"Who?""
Andre asked.
I turned the page.
There was a name.
A name that made my stomach twist.
Before I could say it, my phone buzzed.
A new message appeared.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
The picture loaded.
It was a photograph of Robert's letter.
Someone else had taken a picture of it.
Someone knew we found it.
Then the message appeared.
"Congratulations, Margaret. You found the truth.""
A second message came immediately.
"But you're already too late.""
I froze.
Andre grabbed my phone.
"Who sent this?""
I looked at the screen.
No number.
No name.
Only one final line.
"Ask your son why he signed the papers three months ago.""
I looked at Andre.
His face changed.
May you like
And I knew.
There was something he hadn't told me.
