Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew Too Much

The police station smelled like cold coffee and old paper.

I sat across from Detective Harris while Andre sat beside me.

Danielle sat on the other side of the room.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked small.

Not powerful.

Not confident.

Just afraid.

Detective Harris placed a photograph on the table.

"This is Thomas Keller.""

I looked at the image.

The man from Rebecca's photograph.

"The same man who worked with my husband?""

The detective nodded.

"Yes.""

"And he was found with Robert's forged will?""

"Yes.""

I looked confused.

"Then why isn't this solved?""

Detective Harris leaned back.

"Because someone tried to make it look like Thomas was responsible.""

I frowned.

"What do you mean?""

He opened a file.

"Thomas had evidence against someone.""

"Who?""

The detective looked at Danielle.

Everyone noticed.

Danielle lowered her eyes.

"Me.""

Andre stood immediately.

"What?""

She shook her head.

"Not me.""

She looked at him.

"Not only me.""

The detective continued.

"Thomas had been secretly recording conversations.""

He placed a small device on the table.

"We recovered this from his car.""

My heart raced.

"What does it contain?""

Detective Harris pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Vanessa.

"Once Margaret is declared incompetent, everything transfers smoothly.""

I froze.

Another voice answered.

Thomas.

"And Danielle?""

Vanessa laughed.

"She thinks she is getting a piece. She doesn't understand the agreement.""

Danielle covered her mouth.

Andre stared at her.

The recording continued.

"After the hearing, we remove Danielle from the picture too.""

My eyes moved toward Danielle.

Her face was white.

She whispered:

"She was going to betray me.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"Yes.""

Andre looked at his wife.

"How long did you know Thomas?""

Danielle looked away.

"Months.""

The answer hurt him.

"You lied again.""

"I know.""

She wiped her eyes.

"But I didn't know what he was planning.""

I looked at her.

"Why did you want my house?""

She looked at me.

And for once, there was no anger.

Only shame.

"I thought I deserved security.""

I said nothing.

She continued.

"I grew up with nothing. My parents lost everything. I spent my whole life feeling like I was one mistake away from losing everything.""

She looked at Andre.

"When I met you, I thought I finally had a chance.""

Andre's voice was quiet.

"So you decided to take my mother's life apart?""

Danielle cried silently.

"I was wrong.""

The words were simple.

But they came too late.

Detective Harris cleared his throat.

"There is still one problem.""

I looked at him.

"What?""

He placed another document on the table.

"This.""

I picked it up.

A transfer agreement.

My house.

My accounts.

My signature.

Except...

I never signed it.

"Forgery.""

Detective Harris nodded.

"Yes.""

I looked at the signature.

Then something caught my attention.

A small detail.

The witness signature.

My eyes widened.

"Wait.""

Everyone looked at me.

"This person.""

I pointed.

"The witness.""

Detective Harris leaned closer.

"Who is it?""

I whispered the name.

Because I knew it.

I had seen it before.

On Robert's medical records.

On the forged documents.

On everything.

"Vanessa didn't sign these papers alone.""

I looked at Andre.

"The witness was someone inside the hospital.""

Detective Harris looked confused.

"Who?""

I turned the page.

There it was.

The name that connected everything.

The person who had access to Robert.

The person who helped change records.

The person who knew exactly how vulnerable our family was.

I said the name aloud.

"Dr. Alan Pierce.""

Rebecca's face changed.

"Oh no.""

Andre looked at her.

"You know him?""

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"He was Robert's doctor.""

The room went silent.

Detective Harris immediately stood.

"Then we need to move.""

"Why?""

He grabbed the file.

"Because if Dr. Pierce helped fake your husband's records...""

He looked at me.

"...he may have been the last person to see Robert alive.""

My blood ran cold.

Robert's death.

The records.

The forged will.

The house.

Everything connected back to one night.

A night I thought I understood.

But as Detective Harris rushed toward the door, my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

From Dr. Alan Pierce.

My hands froze.

May you like

The message had only one sentence.

*Margaret, stop searching for the truth before your son learns what you did to his father.*
