Chapter 4: The Papers My Son Signed
I stared at Andre.
For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.
The message on my phone burned into my mind.
*Ask your son why he signed the papers three months ago.*
My hands felt numb.
"Andre," I whispered.
"What papers?""
He looked away.
That was when my heart sank.
Because silence was sometimes more painful than an answer.
"Tell me.""
He rubbed his face.
"Mom...""
"No.""
My voice cracked.
"Not now. Not after everything I just found out. Not after learning my husband knew someone was trying to hurt me.""
He sat down in Robert's chair.
The same chair where my husband had spent countless evenings planning our future.
"I didn't know what I was signing.""
I stared at him.
"You signed something that involved me, and you didn't know?""
He looked ashamed.
"Danielle told me it was just paperwork to help manage things after Dad's death.""
"Manage what?""
He didn't answer.
I stepped closer.
"Andre.""
He swallowed.
"Your estate.""
The room seemed to shrink.
"My estate?""
He nodded slowly.
"She said you were overwhelmed. She said you were struggling with bills and needed someone younger to help organize everything.""
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because it hurt.
"I paid off this house myself.""
"I know.""
"I paid your college tuition.""
"I know.""
"I took care of your father until his last breath.""
"I know, Mom.""
"Then why would you believe I couldn't take care of myself?""
His eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know.""
That answer broke something in me.
Not anger.
Something deeper.
Disappointment.
A mother could survive many things.
But realizing your child stopped seeing you clearly?
That was different.
Then Andre pulled his wallet from his pocket.
"I have a copy.""
I looked at him.
"What?""
"The documents.""
He reached inside and pulled out folded papers.
"I kept them because Vanessa told me they were important.""
My hands shook as I took them.
The first page looked harmless.
Legal language.
Authorization forms.
Power of attorney.
But then I saw my name.
My property address.
My financial accounts.
I looked at Andre.
"You signed a document giving Danielle and Vanessa access to my finances?""
His face turned pale.
"I thought it was temporary.""
"Temporary?""
I held up the paper.
"This gives them control if they claim I am mentally incapable.""
He looked down.
"I didn't understand.""
A sound came from the doorway.
A slow clap.
We turned.
Danielle stood there.
Her tears were gone.
Her expression was cold.
"Finally.""
Andre stood.
"How long have you been listening?""
She walked into the room.
"Long enough.""
I tightened my grip on the papers.
"Did you plan this from the beginning?""
She smiled.
"That's a dramatic way to put it.""
"Answer me.""
She looked at Andre.
"Your mother always did this.""
"Did what?""
"Made everything about betrayal.""
I stared at her.
"You destroyed my birthday cake to make me look unstable.""
She rolled her eyes.
"And you attacked me.""
The words landed like a weapon.
She was right about one thing.
I had lost control.
I had given her exactly what she wanted.
A moment she could use against me.
But now I understood.
The cake was never the plan.
It was evidence.
A performance.
A trap.
"You needed everyone to see me angry," I said.
Danielle smiled slightly.
"You're finally understanding.""
Andre stepped forward.
"Danielle...""
But she raised her hand.
"No, Andre. Your mother wants honesty? Fine.""
My stomach tightened.
She walked closer.
"You know what the problem is with your mother?""
Andre didn't answer.
"She thinks because she sacrificed everything for you, you belong to her forever.""
I felt the words cut.
Because she wasn't attacking my actions.
She was rewriting them.
"I loved my son," I said quietly.
Danielle shrugged.
"And I gave him a future.""
Andre looked confused.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at him.
"Ask your mother why she never told you about the changes Dad wanted to make before he died.""
My heart stopped.
"What changes?""
Andre looked between us.
"Mom?""
I shook my head.
"I don't know what she's talking about.""
Danielle smiled.
"Of course you don't.""
She walked toward the door.
"Check the folder again.""
I looked down.
The blue folder.
"What did you put in there?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she said:
"Your husband left you more secrets than you realize.""
Then she walked away.
Andre waited until the door closed.
"Mom...""
I looked through the documents again.
Behind the medical records was another envelope.
I hadn't noticed it before.
My name was written on it.
But this handwriting wasn't Robert's.
It was Vanessa's.
I opened it carefully.
Inside was a copy of a document dated one month before Robert died.
A document showing a change to his will.
And at the bottom...
My breath stopped.
There was a signature.
My husband's signature.
But something was wrong.
I knew Robert's handwriting.
And that signature wasn't his.
I looked at Andre.
"Someone forged your father's will.""
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A man's voice spoke immediately.
"Margaret Bennett?""
"Yes?""
"This is Detective Harris with the Atlanta Financial Crimes Division.""
My heart raced.
"Why are you calling me?""
There was a pause.
Then he said:
"Because we just received evidence that your husband's death may be connected to an attempted inheritance fraud.""
I couldn't move.
Andre grabbed my arm.
"Mom...""
The detective continued.
"And Mrs. Bennett, there is something else you need to know.""
"What?""
"The person who reported the fraud was someone inside your family.""
I looked at Andre.
Then at the doorway where Danielle had disappeared.
"Who?""
The detective took a breath.
"The report was filed by your daughter-in-law.""
I froze.
May you like
Because for the first time, I wondered if Danielle had not only been trying to destroy me.
Maybe she had been trying to expose someone else.
