Chapter 9: The Daughter I Raised

I couldn't recognize the woman standing in front of me.

Melissa had been my wife for six years.

I'd watched her hold Emma during her first fever. I'd watched her teach our daughter to ride a bicycle. I'd watched her sing lullabies beside her bed.

Now she was telling me that the little girl I'd raised wasn't who I thought she was.

“Explain,” I demanded.

Melissa looked toward Detective Bennett.

“I need to speak to Ryan alone.””

“That's not happening,” the detective replied.

“Then you'll never understand what happened.””

I turned toward her.

“Start talking. Right now.””

Melissa swallowed.

“Emma was born at the same hospital as Grace.””

I remembered the date on the photograph.

October 18.

“Why?””

“Claire went into labor unexpectedly. She was carrying Grace, and I was there with her.””

I frowned.

“You were there?””

Melissa nodded.

“We were best friends. I was supposed to help her after the delivery.””

“And Emma?””

Melissa looked down.

“I wasn't pregnant, Ryan.””

The room fell silent.

I stepped backward.

“What?””

“I couldn't have children. I had known for years.””

My mind raced.

“But you told me…”

“I know what I told you.””

“You said Emma was our biological daughter.””

Melissa began crying.

“I wanted to be a mother. And when Claire gave birth, something happened.””

She explained that Grace had developed breathing complications shortly after delivery.

The hospital staff moved her to another room.

During the confusion, Melissa claimed she was approached by a nurse who had been paid to alter the newborn identification records.

“Who paid her?”” Detective Bennett asked.

Melissa looked at the floor.

“Richard.””

My father.

I felt sick.

Melissa continued.

“Claire discovered what had happened. She confronted Richard, and he threatened to take Grace away permanently.””

“So where did Emma come from?””

Melissa looked at me.

“Emma was the child Claire had been carrying under a temporary name.””

I frowned.

“That makes no sense. Claire had one baby.””

Melissa shook her head.

“No. Claire gave birth to twins.””

I stared at her.

“Twins?””

She nodded.

“Grace and Emma.””

My legs nearly gave out.

I had raised one of Claire's daughters without knowing it.

The other had been taken away and raised by strangers.

But there was something I still couldn't understand.

“Why did you pretend Emma was yours?””

Melissa wiped her cheeks.

“Because Richard told me that if I didn't cooperate, he'd destroy Claire's children. He said he'd make sure none of them inherited anything.””

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“Mrs. Mitchell, are you saying you knowingly participated in a child-switching scheme?””

Melissa nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you know where Grace was?””

“Yes.””

“Did you know where Lily was?””

Melissa covered her face.

“Yes.””

I felt something break inside me.

“You knew all three girls were mine?””

She looked at me.

“I knew they were Claire's children.””

“And you let me believe Emma was mine and yours?””

“Ryan, I loved you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You don't get to use love as an excuse.””

Melissa began sobbing.

Then she said something unexpected.

“There's another reason I kept Lily hidden.””

I turned away.

“I don't care.””

“You should.””

She reached into her pocket and removed a small folded document.

It was a medical report.

Claire's name appeared at the top.

I took it.

The report described a genetic condition discovered during Claire's pregnancy.

A condition that could affect the children's future health.

But the final page contained a handwritten note.

All three children should receive genetic screening through the biological father's family.

I looked at Melissa.

“Why did you hide this?””

“Because Richard told me the results would expose everything.””

Detective Bennett took the report.

“Where are the original records?””

Melissa shook her head.

“Robert has them.””

At that moment, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“What's happening?””

His voice sounded frantic.

“Ryan, you need to get to the hospital.””

“What happened?””

“Lily is missing.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“She was sleeping when the nurse checked on her. When the nurse returned, the room was empty.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where's Emma?””

“Rachel has her.””

“And Grace?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Someone left a message at the nurses' station.””

“What message?””

He lowered his voice.

“They said if you want Lily back, you have to bring Melissa to the old church.””

I turned toward my wife.

She had heard everything.

Her face went white.

“No,” she whispered.

“What?””

Melissa shook her head violently.

“Not the church.””

I grabbed her arm.

“Why?””

She looked at me with terrified eyes.

“Because that's where Claire was supposed to meet Richard the night she died.””

Detective Bennett immediately ordered officers to secure the hospital and locate Lily.

I asked Melissa what she knew.

She stared at the floor.

“Richard used that church as a meeting place. He kept documents there. Money.

Photographs. Everything.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

Melissa slowly raised her eyes.

“Because there's a room beneath the church.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What room?””

She swallowed.

“The room where he kept Claire after the accident.””

I couldn't speak.

Melissa continued.

“Ryan, Claire didn't die on the highway.””

I stepped closer.

“What are you saying?””

She began shaking.

“They found another woman's body in the car.””

The room fell silent.

Detective Bennett immediately grabbed her notebook.

“Mrs. Mitchell, are you telling us Claire may still be alive?””

Melissa nodded.

Then she whispered the words that made the entire room seem to disappear.

“I saw her three months ago.””

I stared at my wife.

“Where?””

Melissa looked toward the window.

“Inside that church.””

And before I could ask another question, my phone received a photograph.

It showed Lily sitting in a wooden chair beneath a dim light.

Beside her stood an older woman.

Her face was partially hidden.

But the crescent-shaped birthmark on her neck was unmistakable.

I knew that birthmark.

I'd kissed it countless times.

Because the woman holding my missing daughter was Claire.

May you like

My first wife.

The woman I'd buried eight years earlier.
