Chapter 6: The Baby Who Vanished

Michael locked the storage unit behind us.

Then he stood beneath the flickering corridor light and handed me the photograph again.

“Look carefully,” he said.

I examined Claire's face.

She looked exhausted but happy, holding the newborn against her chest.

Melissa stood beside her, wearing a hospital visitor badge.

On the back, Claire had written:

Our little miracle. October 18.

I checked the date.

Claire's accident happened on October 21.

Three days later.

I looked at Michael.

“Where was this baby?””

He swallowed.

“I don't know.””

“What's the baby's name?””

“Grace.””

The name sounded familiar.

Then I remembered something.

Eight years earlier, shortly after Claire's death, Melissa had told me she'd found an abandoned baby outside a hospital.

She said the child had been adopted by a family in another state.

I'd barely paid attention.

I was grieving.

I had no idea that story might have been connected to Claire.

“Did Melissa tell you about Grace?”” I asked.

Michael nodded.

“She told me the baby died.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed her?””

“I did. Until I found this photograph.””

He reached into his jacket and pulled out another document.

A hospital discharge record.

The mother was listed as Claire Mitchell.

The infant's name was Grace Mitchell.

But the discharge section had been altered.

The original destination had been crossed out and replaced with another hospital.

I looked at the signature.

Melissa's.

My hands began trembling.

“She took the baby?””

Michael nodded.

“That's what I believe.””

I immediately called Detective Bennett.

She instructed us to meet at the station.

An hour later, she had the photograph, the medical record, and Claire's letter spread across her desk.

“Mr. Bennett,” she said, “why did you wait eight years to come forward?””

Michael stared at the floor.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of whom?””

He looked at me.

“Robert Hayes.””

Detective Bennett leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Michael took a deep breath.

“Claire discovered Robert had been moving money through several companies. He used fake construction contracts and shell accounts to hide the transfers.””

I frowned.

“My company?””

“Some of it.””

I felt nauseated.

Michael continued.

“Claire found documents proving Robert had stolen money from her family's trust. She planned to expose him.””

“Why didn't she go to the police?””

“Because Robert threatened her children.””

I clenched my fists.

“Did he threaten Lily?””

“And Grace.””

Detective Bennett wrote something down.

“What happened the night Claire died?””

Michael closed his eyes.

“She called me at 8:40 p.m. She said she was leaving the hospital with Grace and needed somewhere safe to go.””

“Did you meet her?””

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“An old farmhouse outside town.””

I stared at him.

“Then why was her car on the highway?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because someone followed her.””

He described headlights behind Claire's car.

A dark SUV.

A sudden collision.

Then a phone call.

Michael said he'd rushed toward the crash site, but by the time he arrived, emergency vehicles had already blocked the road.

He saw a man standing beside the wreckage.

A man wearing a dark coat.

The same man who had been scratched out of Claire's photograph.

“Did you recognize him?”” Detective Bennett asked.

Michael nodded.

“Thomas.””

The detective looked up.

“The name from the photograph?””

Michael nodded again.

“Thomas Reed. He worked for Robert.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

“Where is he now?””

Michael shook his head.

“I don't know. He disappeared shortly afterward.””

Detective Bennett stood.

“We'll look into it.””

Then she turned toward me.

“Mr. Mitchell, we need to discuss Lily's guardianship.””

I stiffened.

“What about it?””

“Until the court establishes the facts, we need to ensure she remains in a safe environment.””

“She is my daughter.””

“Biologically, yes. But we also need to investigate the circumstances surrounding her confinement.””

I nodded.

“I understand.””

Michael suddenly interrupted.

“There's one more thing.””

The detective turned.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“Claire left a second letter. Not for Ryan. For Grace.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Where?””

Michael reached into his wallet and removed a small folded piece of paper.

“Claire gave this to me three days before the accident. She told me to keep it hidden until Grace was found.””

He unfolded it.

The handwriting was unmistakably Claire's.

My beautiful Grace,

If you're reading this, your father has finally found you. Never believe anyone who tells you that you were abandoned.

I felt tears gathering in my eyes.

Claire had known.

She had planned for this.

She had expected that one day I might find all three pieces of the truth.

But Michael wasn't finished.

He placed another photograph on the desk.

This one showed a woman holding a little girl outside a school.

The child looked about six.

She had dark brown hair and a crescent-shaped birthmark on her neck.

My heart stopped.

“Who is she?””

Michael's voice cracked.

“Grace.””

I stared at the photograph.

“Where did you get this?””

“Three months ago, I found a former nurse who worked at the hospital where Claire gave birth. She recognized the baby in the picture.””

“Who is the woman holding her?””

Michael hesitated.

“Her name is Evelyn Reed.””

The detective immediately reached for her phone.

“Thomas Reed's wife?””

Michael nodded.

Silence filled the room.

The woman who had raised Grace was married to the man suspected of sabotaging Claire's car.

I stood abruptly.

“Where does she live?””

Detective Bennett held up her hand.

“Ryan, don't do anything reckless.””

“She's raising my daughter!””

“We'll handle it through the proper channels.””

Michael looked at the photograph again.

“There's something you should know.””

I turned.

“What?””

“Evelyn contacted me last week.””

“Why?””

“She said she wanted to return Grace to her real family.””

I felt a flicker of hope.

Then Michael added:

“But she said there was one condition.””

“What condition?””

He looked directly at me.

“She wants Melissa arrested before she'll tell us where Grace is.””

My phone began vibrating.

An unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice whispered.

“Ryan Mitchell?””

“Yes. Who is this?””

“My name is Evelyn.””

I gripped the phone.

“Where is my daughter?””

There was a long silence.

Then she spoke.

“She's safe. But I can't keep protecting her anymore.””

“Tell me where she is.””

“I will. But you need to listen carefully.””

Her voice broke.

“Your wife knows where Grace is. And she's been paying me to keep her hidden.””

I felt my blood turn to ice.

“Melissa?””

“Yes.””

Then Evelyn whispered something that changed everything.

“Ryan, Melissa isn't afraid of Robert.””

I stopped breathing.

“Then who is she afraid of?””

The woman began crying.

“She's afraid of the person who ordered Claire's death.””

A pause.

Then she said the name.

“Your own father.””

I stared at the phone.

My father had been dead for eleven years.

May you like

Or at least, that's what my family had always told me.

And suddenly, I understood why Claire had written that nobody should be trusted.
