Chapter 12: The Son They Kept From Me
I couldn't move.
The little boy stood beside Melissa, holding a battered stuffed rabbit.
He looked frightened.
His clothes were clean, but his face was pale.
I recognized my own features in him immediately.
The same dark eyes.
The same narrow nose.
The same birthmark.
I had another child.
A son.
“What's your name, sweetheart?”” I asked.
“Noah.””
I crouched slowly.
“I'm Ryan.””
He stared at me.
“I know.””
“Who told you?””
“Grandpa.””
Richard chuckled from the balcony.
“He's a clever boy.””
I turned toward him.
“Stay away from my son.””
Richard raised both hands.
“Your son? I raised him.””
Noah looked down.
Then he whispered, “You said my daddy was dead.””
Richard's smile disappeared.
I reached out.
Noah hesitated before taking my hand.
The moment his fingers touched mine, I felt something inside me collapse.
I had missed his first steps.
His first words.
His first birthday.
Seven years of his life had been stolen.
I looked toward Claire.
She was crying silently.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked.
Claire shook her head.
“I tried. Richard intercepted every message.””
“Did you know he was alive?””
“I suspected. I never knew where he was.””
Melissa stepped forward.
“I found him three months ago.””
I turned sharply.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because I was trying to get all four children out.””
I stared at her.
“You could have called the police.””
“Richard had people everywhere. I didn't know who to trust.””
Detective Bennett interrupted.
“Enough. Richard Mitchell, put down the remote and step away from the railing.””
Richard laughed.
“Detective, you still believe this is a simple kidnapping case?””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a thick envelope.
“Everything Claire has told you is irrelevant. The children belong to the Carter estate.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Claire stepped forward.
“James Carter was Ryan's biological father. He left everything to his grandchildren.””
Richard shook his head.
“He left it to his descendants, yes. But the original documents were never registered.””
I looked at Claire.
“Where are they?””
She held up the silver key.
“Beneath the altar.””
Detective Bennett signaled to one of her officers.
He approached the altar cautiously and found a small metal compartment hidden beneath the wooden platform.
Inside were several sealed envelopes, a USB drive, and a leather-bound book.
Richard suddenly shouted.
“Don't touch that!””
The officer continued.
He opened the leather book.
Names and financial transactions filled the pages.
There were records of payments to Robert Hayes, Thomas Reed, and several hospital employees.
Then Detective Bennett found something else.
A document titled:
Original Beneficiary Declaration.
She read the first paragraph aloud.
“James Carter hereby establishes an irrevocable inheritance trust for the benefit of his grandchildren…”
I watched her turn the page.
Her expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
She looked at me.
“There's a separate declaration concerning the biological parentage of the children.””
Richard began moving toward the staircase.
Two officers immediately ordered him to stop.
He ignored them.
Then the church lights went out.
A loud crash came from above.
Someone screamed.
I pulled Noah close.
“Stay behind me!””
Emergency lights flickered on.
Richard was gone.
Detective Bennett shouted into her radio.
“Suspect moving toward the rear exit!””
Officers rushed after him.
Claire grabbed my arm.
“Ryan, we need to leave.””
I looked toward the altar.
The USB drive was still there.
I picked it up.
“What's on this?””
Claire shook her head.
“Everything.””
We escaped through the basement passage.
Outside, several officers were searching the church grounds.
Melissa sat on the steps, holding her injured head.
I approached her.
“Where's Robert?””
She looked up.
“Gone.””
“What do you mean?””
“He was supposed to meet Richard here.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Where is he?””
Melissa swallowed.
“He went to your house.””
I immediately called Rachel.
No answer.
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then a text appeared.
Ryan, please come home. Someone is inside.
I called Detective Bennett.
She ordered officers to our address.
I held Noah's hand as we rushed toward the police vehicle.
Claire climbed into the back seat.
Melissa followed.
I turned toward her.
“You're not coming.””
She looked devastated.
“Ryan, please.””
“You've lied to me for eight years.””
“I know.””
“You hid my children.””
“I know.””
“You let me bury a woman who was still alive.””
Melissa lowered her head.
“I know.””
I couldn't forgive her.
Not yet.
But I needed to know what she knew.
We reached the house in less than twenty minutes.
The front door was open.
The hallway lights were on.
A child's drawing lay on the carpet.
Emma's drawing.
I picked it up.
It showed five people holding hands beneath a yellow sun.
Emma had drawn herself, Lily, Grace, Noah, and me.
There was another figure standing behind us.
A tall man wearing a black hat.
At the bottom, she'd written:
The bad man who came to see Grandma.
I turned toward Claire.
“Emma saw someone?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Ryan, your mother…”
She stopped.
I stared at her.
“My mother is dead.””
Claire shook her head.
“Not your biological mother.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“James Carter had a daughter before he married your mother. Her name was Eleanor.””
I remembered the name from the documents.
Claire continued.
“Eleanor was the woman who gave birth to you.””
I felt the room spin.
“Where is she?””
Claire looked toward the staircase.
“She's been living in this house.””
I turned.
A floorboard creaked above us.
Then a woman's voice called softly from the second floor.
“Ryan?””
I froze.
The voice sounded familiar.
A voice from my childhood.
A voice I had spent eleven years believing I'd never hear again.
“It's time you knew why your father stole you from me.””
A woman appeared at the top of the stairs.
She was holding Emma's hand.
And in her other hand was a photograph of my father standing beside Robert Hayes.

On the back, five words had been written in red ink:
The real killer is home.
