Chapter 11: Four Children, One Terrible Secret

Richard stood on the balcony, smiling like a man attending a celebration.

I held Lily tightly against my chest.

Claire moved toward us.

“Richard, leave them alone.””

He laughed.

“You've been asking me to leave people alone for eight years.””

I looked up.

“What do you want?””

He rested his hands on the railing.

“Everything Claire stole from me.””

“She didn't steal anything.””

“She stole my future, Ryan. Your biological father built an empire, and Claire discovered the documents that proved I had taken control of it.””

I shook my head.

“You raised me. You were supposed to be my father.””

Richard's smile faded.

“Your real father was a weak man. James Carter had money, influence, and a beautiful family. But he couldn't protect any of them.””

“Where is he?””

Richard chuckled.

“Dead. Just like your mother.””

My hands tightened around Lily.

Claire stepped forward.

“Stop lying.””

Richard looked at her.

“You should be grateful I kept you alive.””

Claire's voice trembled.

“You took my children.””

“I protected the family.””

“You imprisoned me!””

He raised the remote.

A small red light blinked.

“Careful, Claire.””

I glanced toward the altar.

There was a narrow wooden door behind it.

I remembered Melissa mentioning a room beneath the church.

“What's behind that door?”” I asked.

Richard looked at me.

“Your inheritance.””

Claire shook her head.

“Ryan, don't open it.””

“Why?””

“Because that's where he kept the records.””

Richard smiled.

“She's learning to be dramatic.””

Then he pressed a button.

A loud mechanical sound echoed beneath the floor.

The church lights flickered.

Lily buried her face against my chest.

“Daddy, I want Emma.””

I kissed her forehead.

“Emma is safe, sweetheart.””

But Claire suddenly looked alarmed.

“Where is Emma?””

“With my sister.””

Claire shook her head.

“No. Ryan, Richard knows where Rachel lives.””

I felt my blood turn cold.

I pulled out my phone.

No signal.

Then I heard a crash outside.

Someone shouted.

A gunshot echoed through the churchyard.

Richard laughed.

“You see? This is why I always stayed one step ahead.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“There's another way out.””

She pointed toward the old confession booth.

“There's a passage behind it. It leads to the basement.””

I looked at her.

“Come with me.””

She nodded.

We moved toward the booth.

But Richard suddenly shouted.

“Don't you dare!””

He pressed another button.

A metal security shutter dropped over the main entrance.

Then a second shutter blocked the hallway.

We were trapped.

I turned toward Claire.

“How did you survive all these years?””

She looked at me.

“Because I made a deal.””

“With Richard?””

She nodded.

“I agreed to disappear if he promised to leave the children alive.””

My chest tightened.

“And you believed him?””

“No. But I needed time.””

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small silver key.

“I hid something beneath the altar.””

I looked toward the wooden platform.

“What?””

“The original trust documents. The records proving Richard's identity, the forged signatures, and the real story behind the accident.””

“Why didn't you give them to the police?””

“Because Richard controlled the people who were supposed to protect us.””

I stared at her.

“Then why come back now?””

Claire looked down at Lily.

“Because Lily turned five. The trust became active, and Richard started moving again.””

I remembered the medical records, the missing money, and the hidden passages.

Everything was connected.

Then Claire said something that made my stomach tighten.

“Ryan, I need you to understand something about the fourth child.””

I turned.

“Who is the fourth child?””

She took a photograph from her pocket.

It showed four newborn babies lying in separate hospital bassinets.

I stared at it.

“Four?””

Claire nodded.

“Grace and Emma were twins. Lily was born two years earlier.””

“And the fourth?””

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

“His name is Noah.””

I felt dizzy.

“Where is he?””

“I don't know.””

“What do you mean you don't know?””

“Richard took him.””

A voice came from the basement door.

“Actually, Claire, I know exactly where he is.””

Melissa stood in the doorway.

Her clothes were torn, and blood ran down her forehead.

Behind her stood Detective Bennett, holding her weapon.

“Everybody stay where you are!””

Richard's smile vanished.

Melissa looked directly at Claire.

Then she spoke.

“Ryan, I found Noah.””

I stepped toward her.

“Where?””

She began crying.

“Your father has been raising him.””

I stared at Richard.

He didn't deny it.

Instead, he slowly lowered the remote.

Then he said something that made every hair on my arms stand up.

“Noah isn't just your son, Ryan.””

He pointed toward the photograph.

“He's the only person who knows where James Carter hid the original inheritance.””

Claire covered her mouth.

Richard smiled again.

“And he's standing right outside.””

A small boy appeared in the doorway.

He looked about seven.

He had my dark brown eyes.

And the same crescent-shaped birthmark on his neck.

He looked at me.

Then he asked:

“Are you the man Mommy told me to find?””
