Chapter 3: The Night Claire Died
I didn't sleep that night.
Neither did Melissa.
Lily was taken to the hospital for examination, while Emma stayed with my sister, Rachel.
Daniel insisted on accompanying us.
I refused.
“You've told me enough stories for one day,” I said.
“I'll take my daughter to the hospital myself.””
Daniel looked offended.
“Ryan, I'm trying to help you.””
“Then start by telling me why someone just warned me about you.””
His expression changed.
“What did the message say?””
I held up my phone.
He read it.
For a moment, his face went completely blank.
Then he handed the phone back.
“Don't respond.””
“Why?””
“Because whoever sent that message knows we're investigating.””
I stepped closer.
“Investigating what?””
Daniel looked toward Lily, who was sitting on the hospital bed, drinking warm milk.
“Your wife's death.””
My throat tightened.
“Claire's death was an accident.””
“That's what the police report says.””
“And?””
Daniel pulled a chair closer.
“Claire called me three days before the accident. She was terrified.””
“Of what?””
“Melissa.””
I felt the room tilt.
Daniel explained that Claire had discovered something shortly before she died.
Melissa had been secretly accessing financial documents belonging to Claire's family.
She had also been asking questions about Lily's inheritance.
Claire suspected someone was trying to gain control of the trust.
“She wanted to tell you,” Daniel said.
“But she was afraid.””
“Why wouldn't she tell me?””
“Because she believed you were being watched.””
I shook my head.
“This is insane.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Ryan, Claire left me something before she died. A recording.””
He reached into his briefcase and removed a small USB drive.
I stared at it.
“What's on it?””
“Her final conversation with Melissa.””
I felt my hands go cold.
“Play it.””
Daniel connected the drive to his laptop.
A woman's voice filled the hospital room.
Claire.
I recognized her immediately.
Even after eight years, I could recognize her voice anywhere.
“Melissa, I know what you're doing. I've seen the transfers.””
Another voice answered.
My wife's.
“You don't understand the situation.””
“I understand perfectly. You're stealing from my daughter.””
“Claire, please. Don't make this difficult.””
“You have no right to Lily's money.””
There was a pause.
Then Melissa spoke again.
“You should have thought about that before trusting me.””
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
“Is that real?””
Daniel nodded.
“I received it the morning after Claire died.””
“Why didn't you give it to the police?””
“I tried. But the original file disappeared from my office, and the recording was incomplete.””
“Who deleted it?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I don't know.””
I stood up.
“I'm calling the police.””
“Not yet.””
I spun around.
“What?””
“Your wife may have had an accomplice.””
I laughed without humor.
“You expect me to believe everyone is conspiring against me?””
“No. I expect you to understand that Claire's death was never properly investigated.””
He closed the laptop.
“Look at the accident report again.””
I remembered the night Claire died.
Rain had covered the highway. Her car had crossed the center line and collided with a truck.
The police said she lost control.
I had identified her body.
I had buried her.
For eight years, I'd believed that was the end of the story.
But Daniel handed me a photocopy of the original accident report.
One line had been highlighted.
Brake system failure suspected. Vehicle components unavailable for independent examination.
I read it again.
“Unavailable?””
“The car was destroyed before an independent inspection could take place.””
“Who authorized that?””
Daniel didn't answer.
I looked at the bottom of the report.
The authorization signature belonged to the insurance investigator.
A man named Robert Hayes.
I knew that name.
Robert had been my company's accountant for nearly a decade.
He had introduced Melissa and me at a charity dinner.
He had attended my wedding.
And he was still working for me.
My phone rang.
Robert.
I answered immediately.
“Ryan, where are you?”” he asked.
“At the hospital.””
“Listen, I need you to come to the office. Something urgent has happened.””
“What happened?””
“Someone accessed the old company archives.””
I glanced at Daniel.
“What archives?””
“The files connected to Claire's accident.””
My stomach tightened.
“Why would anyone be looking at those?””
Robert lowered his voice.
“Because someone has been transferring money from the Mitchell family trust.””
I looked at Daniel.
He slowly stood.
“How much?”” I asked.
“Almost four million dollars.””
The same amount Lily was supposed to inherit.
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“Who authorized the transfers?””
There was a long silence.
Then Robert said something that made my blood run cold.
“Your signature, Ryan.””
“I never authorized anything.””
“I know. That's why I'm calling.””
“Who has access to my signature?””
Another pause.
Then he answered.
“Melissa.””
I closed my eyes.
Everything was beginning to fit together.
The hidden child.
The stolen inheritance.
The forged documents.
Claire's mysterious death.
But there was one thing I still couldn't understand.
If Melissa had been hiding Lily to steal her inheritance, why had she kept her alive inside our house?
Why not send her somewhere nobody could find her?
I ended the call.
Daniel was watching me.
“There's more, isn't there?”” I asked.
He nodded slowly.
“Claire didn't just leave Lily an inheritance.””
“What else?””
“She left her a letter.””
“Where is it?””
Daniel reached into his briefcase.
“I gave it to the attorney after the funeral. But he disappeared two weeks later.””
“Disappeared?””
“His office was emptied. His house was sold. Nobody could find him.””
I stared at him.
Then I remembered the photograph.
The one showing Claire with Lily.
I pulled it from my pocket and examined the back.
There was something I hadn't noticed earlier.
A small handwritten date.
And beneath it, a sentence.
Ryan, if Lily is ever in danger, look beneath the old nursery floor.
I recognized the handwriting immediately.
Claire had written it.
The old nursery was in my house.
The room Melissa had converted into a storage room shortly after we married.
I grabbed my keys.
“I'm going home.””
Daniel stood.
“Ryan, wait.””
“I'm done waiting.””
He caught my arm.
“There's something I haven't told you about Lily.””
I pulled free.
“What now?””
Daniel looked toward the hospital bed.
Lily was asleep.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Claire didn't die knowing she had lost everything.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel swallowed.
“She knew Melissa was planning something. But she also knew someone else was helping her.””
“Who?””
Daniel looked directly into my eyes.
“Someone who had access to your house before you married Melissa.””
I felt my stomach drop.
Because there was only one person who fit that description.
Someone who had been living under my roof for years.
Someone I trusted with my company, my finances, and my family.
My phone vibrated again.
This time, there was an attached photograph.
It showed the inside of my old nursery.
And standing beside the crib was Robert Hayes.
The message beneath it contained only one sentence:
Ask your daughter what she saw the night Mommy disappeared.
I looked toward Lily.
Her eyes were suddenly open.
She was staring at the photograph.
Then she whispered something that made Daniel step backward.
“That's not the man who took Mommy.””
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, who was it?””
Lily's small fingers tightened around mine.
May you like
Then she pointed toward the hospital doorway.
“It's the man standing behind you.””
