Chapter 10: The Woman I Buried Was Alive
I stared at the photograph until my eyes began to burn.
The woman holding Lily was older than the Claire I remembered. Her hair was streaked with gray, her cheeks were thinner, and there was a deep scar near her right eyebrow.
But I knew her.
I knew the way she tilted her head.
I knew the small crescent-shaped birthmark on her neck.
I knew the woman who had once fallen asleep against my shoulder while we watched movies on rainy Sunday afternoons.
Claire.
My dead wife.
“That's impossible,” I whispered.
Melissa was crying beside me.
“Ryan, please…”
I turned toward her.
“You said you saw her three months ago.””
Melissa nodded.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Richard said he would kill her if I did.””
I grabbed the photograph again.
“Where is she?””
“The old church.””
“Why is Lily with her?””
“Because Claire asked for her.””
Detective Bennett stepped forward.
“Mrs. Mitchell, are you telling us Claire has been alive this entire time?””
Melissa nodded.
“Richard arranged everything. The accident was staged. The woman in the car was someone else.””
“Who?””
Melissa shook her head.
“I never knew her identity.””
Detective Bennett immediately called for additional officers.
I couldn't wait.
“I'm going there.””
She caught my arm.
“Ryan, you cannot walk into a possible hostage situation.””
“That's my wife and my daughter!””
“And if you get yourself killed, you'll lose the chance to bring them home.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Lily was sitting in a wooden chair.
Her hands appeared tied.
Claire was standing behind her.
I noticed something else.
Claire was wearing a silver necklace.
The one I'd given her on our fifth wedding anniversary.
I'd watched them lower her coffin.
I'd spent eight years visiting her grave.
And the necklace was now hanging around her neck.
I felt physically sick.
Detective Bennett organized a team.
Melissa agreed to guide them to the church.
On the way, she finally told me what had happened.
After the supposed accident, Richard had taken Claire to a private property.
He'd arranged medical treatment under another name and kept her isolated.
“Why didn't she escape?”” I asked.
Melissa stared through the car window.
“Because Richard told her that you were dead.””
I turned toward her.
“What?””
“He showed her photographs of your funeral. He told her you'd been killed in a separate accident.””
I couldn't speak.
Melissa continued.
“He also told her Lily and Grace were dead. He said Emma had been adopted and that nobody knew where she was.””
I clenched my fists.
“He destroyed her life.””
Melissa nodded.
“And mine.””
I looked at her.
“You helped him.””
She didn't deny it.
“I thought if I obeyed him, he'd eventually let me go. Every time I tried to leave, he threatened the children.””
The church appeared through the windshield.
It stood at the end of a narrow road, surrounded by overgrown trees.
The building had been abandoned for years.
Police vehicles surrounded the property.
Detective Bennett ordered everyone to remain behind the tactical team.
But before they entered, I noticed a small movement in the upstairs window.
A curtain shifted.
Then a light appeared.
My phone vibrated.
An unknown number.
Come inside, Ryan. I want to see my husband.
I looked at the message.
Then another arrived.
Alone.
I showed Detective Bennett.
She shook her head.
“Absolutely not.””
I stepped out of the vehicle.
“Ryan!””
But I was already walking toward the church.
I stopped at the entrance.
The heavy wooden doors were slightly open.
Inside, candles illuminated the empty pews.
A piano stood beneath the stained-glass windows.
Then I heard a voice.
“Ryan?””
My heart nearly stopped.
I turned.
Claire stood at the end of the aisle.
For a moment, neither of us moved.
She looked at me as though she were seeing a ghost.
Then her lips trembled.
“You're alive.””
I took one step toward her.
“Claire…”
She covered her mouth.
I wanted to run to her, hold her, and ask a thousand questions.
But something stopped me.
Her eyes moved toward the doorway behind me.
“Did you bring Melissa?””
I nodded.
“She's outside.””
Claire's expression hardened.
“Then don't trust anything she tells you.””
Before I could respond, Lily appeared from behind the altar.
“Daddy!””
She ran toward me.
I caught her and held her tightly.
“Sweetheart. Are you hurt?””
She shook her head.
Then she whispered, “Daddy, Mommy said there's another secret.””
I looked at Claire.
“What secret?””
She stepped closer.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Ryan, I didn't have three children.””
I frowned.
“Then what?””
Claire took a shaky breath.
“I had four.””
The church doors slammed shut.
A man began applauding from the balcony.
I looked up.
Richard stood above us.
My supposed dead father smiled.
“Wonderful reunion,” he said.
May you like
Then he raised a remote control.
“But now it's time for the family to finish what it started.””
