Chapter 2: The Photograph My Dead Wife Left Behind

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The stranger stood halfway inside the hidden passage, his shoulders nearly touching both walls.

He looked to be in his early sixties. Gray hair. Deep wrinkles. A scar running from his left temple toward his cheek.

But what frightened me most wasn't his appearance.

It was the fact that he knew my name.

“Who are you?”” I demanded.

He held up the photograph.

“My name is Daniel Carter. I was Claire's physician.””

I stared at him.

“Claire's doctor died eight years ago.””

Daniel nodded.

“Dr. Samuel Carter died. I'm his brother.””

Melissa suddenly stood.

“Get out of my house!””

Daniel didn't even look at her.

“You've had five years to explain this, Melissa. Five years to tell him the truth.””

“SHUT UP!””

The little girl began whimpering.

I stepped between her and the adults.

“Everybody stop talking. Someone needs to tell me what's happening.””

Daniel slowly lowered the photograph.

“Her name is Lily.””

I looked toward the child.

“Lily?””

She nodded.

“That's what Mommy called me.””

My heart skipped.

“Your mommy?””

Lily pointed toward the photograph.

“The lady in the picture.””

Claire.

My first wife.

The woman who supposedly died in a car accident eight years earlier.

I felt dizzy.

“Claire couldn't have had another child. She died before Emma was born. She never told me about Lily.””

Daniel looked at me with an expression that made my stomach tighten.

“That's because she was protecting you.””

Melissa laughed bitterly.

“Protecting him? Is that what you've decided to call it?””

Daniel finally turned toward her.

“You should be ashamed.””

“Don't you dare judge me!””

“Then explain why a five-year-old child has been sleeping inside a wall!””

Melissa's face crumpled.

I grabbed her wrist.

“Start talking.””

She pulled away.

“I didn't put her there.””

“Then who did?””

She looked at Daniel.

He didn't answer.

Instead, he carefully approached the opening.

“Lily, sweetheart, can you tell Ryan who brought you here?””

The girl clutched her blanket.

Her eyes moved between Daniel and Melissa.

Then she whispered, “The lady with the red shoes.””

Melissa made a choking sound.

I turned toward her.

“What lady?””

Lily pointed directly at my wife.

“Her.””

The room went silent.

Melissa backed away.

“She's confused.””

Lily began shaking her head.

“You told me Daddy didn't want me.””

My knees nearly buckled.

“What?””

“You said Daddy had another family. You said if I came out, he would send me away.””

I looked at Melissa.

She began crying.

“Ryan, I can explain.””

“Then explain!””

Melissa pressed both hands against her chest.

“Claire had Lily before she died. She was pregnant when you two separated for several months.””

I stared at her.

“That makes no sense.””

“Claire never told you because she wasn't sure whether the baby was yours.””

Daniel interrupted.

“That's not true.””

Melissa glared at him.

“You weren't there!””

“I was there when Claire received the DNA results.””

My heart pounded.

“What DNA results?””

Daniel reached into his coat and produced a folded document.

“Claire requested a paternity test before her death. The results confirmed that you were Lily's biological father.””

I took the paper.

My name was printed clearly.

Ryan Mitchell.

Probability of paternity: 99.99%.

I sat on the edge of the bed.

I had a daughter.

Another daughter.

A child whose existence had been hidden from me for five years.

“Where was she all this time?”” I asked.

Daniel hesitated.

“After Claire died, Lily was placed under temporary guardianship. Melissa was listed as an emergency contact.””

I looked up.

“Why Melissa?””

“She told the authorities she was Claire's closest friend.””

That was true.

Melissa and Claire had been inseparable before Claire died.

In fact, Melissa had helped organize Claire's funeral.

She had held my hand during the service.

She had cried harder than anyone.

Daniel continued.

“After you married Melissa, she convinced everyone that Lily had been transferred to a distant relative. But there was no relative.””

I turned toward my wife.

“You knew?””

Melissa covered her mouth.

“You knew I had a daughter?””

She nodded.

“How long?””

“Ryan…”

“HOW LONG?””

“Since before our wedding.””

The words landed like a physical blow.

I remembered our wedding day.

Melissa had worn Claire's old pearl earrings. She'd told me they were a gift from a friend.

I'd kissed her beneath a white arch while my daughter lived somewhere in the world without knowing her father.

I looked at Lily.

“Why was she in the wall?””

Melissa sank onto the chair.

“I was going to send her away.””

“When?””

“Last month.””

“Where?””

She didn't answer.

Daniel placed another document on the bed.

“There's something else you need to know.””

I unfolded it.

It was a legal guardianship agreement.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Melissa.

But beneath it was another signature.

My own.

I stared at the handwriting.

It looked exactly like mine.

Except I had never signed that document.

“What is this?””

Daniel's voice dropped.

“It's the agreement that transferred Lily's inheritance to Melissa.””

I looked up.

“Inheritance?””

“Claire left Lily a trust fund. A substantial one. It became accessible when Lily turned five.””

Lily had turned five three weeks earlier.

My wife had been hiding her just long enough to prevent her from accessing the money.

I slowly turned toward Melissa.

“How much?””

Daniel answered.

“Four million dollars.””

Melissa began sobbing.

I couldn't speak.

Then my phone vibrated.

An unknown number.

One message.

Ryan, don't let Daniel take Lily. He knows what happened to Claire.

I read it twice.

Then another message appeared.

Ask him why your first wife was really driving that night.

I looked up.

Daniel was watching me.

His expression had changed.

“Who sent that?”” he asked.

May you like

I slowly lowered my phone.

And for the first time, I wondered whether the man who had just rescued my daughter was actually the person I needed to fear.
