Chapter 13: The Mother Who Never Died
I stood at the bottom of the staircase, unable to move.
The woman holding Emma's hand looked older than the mother I remembered, but her eyes were unmistakable.
Eleanor.
The woman who had supposedly died when I was seventeen.
The woman whose funeral my father had organized.
The woman whose death had supposedly destroyed our family.
“Mom?””
Her lips trembled.
“Hello, my beautiful boy.””
I felt my knees weaken.
I wanted to run upstairs and embrace her. I wanted to demand explanations. I wanted to know why she'd allowed me to believe she was dead for eleven years.
Instead, I looked at Emma.
“Sweetheart, come downstairs.””
Emma shook her head.
“Grandma says it's okay.””
Eleanor gently released her hand.
“Emma, go sit with your sisters.””
Lily, Grace, and Noah moved toward their grandmother.
Claire stood frozen beside me.
“You're alive,” she whispered.
Eleanor looked at her.
“So are you. Apparently, Richard has been collecting miracles.””
Detective Bennett immediately raised her weapon.
“Eleanor Carter, step away from the child.””
Eleanor obeyed.
“Detective, I'm not your enemy.””
“Then explain why you disappeared eleven years ago.””
Eleanor glanced at me.
“Because Richard was going to kill my son.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Why?””
She walked slowly down the stairs.
“Because you weren't his biological child. You were James Carter's son, and Richard knew that.””
Claire stepped forward.
“Eleanor, tell him about the hospital.””
Eleanor nodded.
“When you were born, James and I were married. Richard was his business partner. He wanted control over the Carter estate, but James had made arrangements to leave everything to his biological descendants.””
She paused.
“Richard couldn't inherit it. So he stole you.””
I stared at her.
“He stole me?””
“He arranged for your birth records to be altered. He paid hospital employees, forged documents, and convinced James that you had died during delivery.””
I looked toward the leather-bound book Detective Bennett had recovered from the church.
“And James?””
Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.
“He never knew you survived. He died believing he had lost his son.””
I swallowed.
“Why didn't you come back for me?””
“I tried.””
She reached into her pocket and produced a small photograph.
It showed a young woman holding a baby.
On the back was my name.
“Richard threatened to hurt you. I had no choice but to disappear.””
I shook my head.
“You could have contacted me when I became an adult.””
“I did.””
She pulled out several envelopes.
All were addressed to me.
All had been returned.
“Richard intercepted every letter.””
I took them.
Some were dated years earlier.
One contained a photograph of me at my college graduation.
My mother had been watching from somewhere nearby.
I felt tears roll down my cheeks.
“Why come back now?””
Eleanor looked at the children.
“Because Richard made one mistake. He believed I would remain silent forever.””
Detective Bennett approached.
“Where is Richard now?””
Eleanor's expression changed.
“Not far.””
She placed the photograph on the table.
It showed Richard and Robert standing outside our house.
The date was yesterday.
“Robert came here to retrieve something,” she explained.
“He believed the original trust documents were hidden inside this house.””
“What documents?””
“The final declaration James left behind.””
Claire stepped forward.
“There's a second document?””
Eleanor nodded.
“James didn't simply leave the children money. He left them ownership of the entire Carter estate.””
I looked at the photograph.
“What does that include?””
“Your father's original construction company, several properties, and a controlling interest in the investment group Richard has been using for years.””
I felt sick.
My company.
The business I'd spent my adult life running.
It had been part of a much larger inheritance.
Eleanor opened her handbag and removed a small cassette recorder.
“James made a recording before he died.””
She pressed play.
An elderly man's voice filled the room.
“If you're hearing this, Richard has probably taken control of my family. I want my grandchildren to know that none of them were abandoned. I want them to know that their father was stolen from them before he ever had the chance to know his own name.””
I closed my eyes.
Then the recording continued.
“Richard Mitchell is not the only person responsible. Someone inside my family helped him. Someone who had access to every document, every bank account, and every private conversation.””
The recording stopped.
I looked at Eleanor.
“Who?””
She didn't answer.
Instead, she turned toward Melissa.
My wife was standing near the doorway.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Melissa,” Eleanor said quietly.
“Tell him.””
Melissa shook her head.
“Please don't.””
I stepped toward her.
“Tell me what?””
She began crying.
“Richard didn't act alone.””
“Who helped him?””
Melissa looked at me.
Then she whispered:
“Claire's brother.””
I turned toward the hallway.
Michael.
The man who had supposedly been helping us find the truth.
The man who had claimed to be protecting Lily.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of Michael sitting inside a car.
Beside him was Robert.
Beneath the picture were six words:
The man you trusted sold them all.
Then another message arrived.
Bring the original trust documents to the courthouse tomorrow. Come alone.
I looked at Eleanor.
She was staring at the photograph with tears in her eyes.
“Ryan,” she whispered, “Michael isn't Claire's brother.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
“Then who is he?””
May you like
She looked directly into my eyes.
“Michael Bennett is Richard's biological son.””
