Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
The revelation changed everything.
Michael wasn't Claire's brother.
He was Richard's son.
The man who had guided us through the investigation had been part of the conspiracy from the beginning.
I looked at Melissa.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“Not at first.””
“When did you find out?””
“Three months ago. Robert told me.””
I stepped backward.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because Michael threatened to expose everything I'd done.””
I laughed bitterly.
“So you kept protecting him?””
“No. I was trying to protect the children.””
Claire moved between us.
“Ryan, we don't have time for this.””
She pointed toward the photograph.
“Michael knows about the documents. If he gets them, Richard will have everything he needs to disappear again.””
Detective Bennett immediately ordered additional officers to secure the house.
But I had already decided what to do.
I would meet Michael.
Not alone.
And I would bring something he couldn't ignore.
The following morning, Detective Bennett arranged surveillance around the courthouse.
I carried a briefcase containing copies of the original trust documents.
The real documents remained with Eleanor.
At exactly 10:15 a.m., Michael appeared.
He wore a navy suit and carried a leather folder.
He smiled when he saw me.
“Ryan. You look terrible.””
I didn't smile.
“Where is Robert?””
“Busy.””
“Where is my father?””
Michael looked toward the courthouse entrance.
“Your father is waiting for you.””
I opened the briefcase.
“Then tell him to come out.””
Michael laughed.
“You still don't understand. Richard doesn't need to come out. He already owns everything.””
I stared at him.
“You betrayed Claire.””
His smile disappeared.
“She was supposed to stay out of our business.””
“She was your sister.””
Michael leaned closer.
“Half-sister. And she ruined everything.””
I clenched my fists.
“Why did you pretend to help us?””
“Because I needed to know where the documents were hidden.””
He glanced at the briefcase.
“Give them to me.””
“No.””
Michael sighed.
“Your biological father was a fool. He thought money could protect his family. Richard taught me something different.””
“What?””
“Fear is cheaper.””
He reached inside his jacket.
Before he could move, two officers stepped from behind the courthouse columns.
“Michael Bennett! Put your hands where we can see them!””
Michael froze.
Then he smiled.
“You think I'm stupid enough to come here without protection?””
A black SUV screeched around the corner.
The passenger door opened.
Robert Hayes jumped out.
He was holding a small handgun.
People screamed and scattered.
“DROP THE BRIEFCASE!”” Robert shouted.
I raised my hands.
Michael grabbed the briefcase.
But before he could escape, a woman's voice rang out.
“Robert!””
Claire.
She was standing behind the police vehicles.
Robert turned.
For one second, he looked genuinely shocked.
“Claire?””
She stepped forward.
“You told me Ryan was dead.””
Robert's face twisted.
“You should have stayed buried.””
Detective Bennett ordered him to drop his weapon.
Robert raised it instead.
A gunshot cracked through the air.
I ducked.
Two officers tackled Robert to the pavement.
The briefcase fell.
Michael ran.
But he didn't get far.
A police vehicle blocked the exit, and officers surrounded him.
Within minutes, both men were in handcuffs.
I walked toward Robert.
He was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.
“Why?”” I asked.
He looked up at me.
“Because your father paid me.””
“For what?””
“Everything.””
“Claire's accident?””
He remained silent.
I crouched.
“Did you sabotage her brakes?””
Robert finally nodded.
“She was going to destroy us.””
I felt rage rising inside me.
“And the woman who died in that car?””
Robert looked away.
“Thomas arranged it.””
“Who was she?””
He swallowed.
“An employee from one of our private clinics.””
I stood.
“Her family deserves the truth.””
Robert said nothing.
Then Detective Bennett approached.
“We've found Richard.””
I turned.
“Where?””
“At the old Mitchell estate. He was trying to leave the country.””
I felt a strange calm settle over me.
“Is he arrested?””
She nodded.
“And there's something else. We recovered a safe containing original records, photographs, and medical files.””
“Anything about my children?””
She hesitated.
“Everything.””
That evening, I returned home.
Eleanor was sitting on the living-room sofa with Emma in her lap.
Lily was drawing beside Grace.
Noah was building a tower from wooden blocks.
Claire stood near the window.
For the first time in eight years, all my children were under one roof.
I approached her.
“It's over.””
She looked at me.
“Is it?””
I nodded.
“Richard is in custody. Robert confessed. Michael is being charged.””
Claire smiled faintly.
Then Eleanor entered carrying a sealed envelope.
“Ryan, there's one more document.””
I looked at her.
“What now?””
She placed it on the table.
It was James Carter's final will.
I opened it.
The first pages confirmed the children's inheritance.
But the final page contained a handwritten note.
To my son, Ryan: If Richard has finally been stopped, there is one last truth you deserve to know.
My hands began trembling.
I read the next sentence.
The woman who gave birth to you was not Eleanor.
I looked up.
Eleanor had begun crying.
Claire covered her mouth.
I slowly turned toward my mother.
“Then who was she?””
Eleanor looked toward the staircase.
A woman stood there.
She was holding a photograph of a young couple.
And beside the photograph was a hospital bracelet bearing my name.

The woman whispered:
“I'm sorry, Ryan. I was the nurse who switched you at birth.””
