Chapter 9: The Stranger At The Door

I stared at the message until the screen went dark.

Then I turned it back on.

Same words.

Same threat.

My first instinct was anger.

My second was fear.

Not for myself.

For Noah.

Someone knew.

Someone knew I was searching.

Someone knew Lily had contacted me.

Someone knew the truth was getting closer.

I drove home faster than I should have.

When I arrived, Noah was sitting on the front steps.

My heart dropped.

“What are you doing outside?””

He looked at me.

“Waiting for you.””

I forced a smile.

“Why?””

“Because I know something is wrong.””

I walked closer.

“Noah…”

“Mom.””

His eyes searched mine.

“Is Dad lying about something?””

I stopped.

Children always know more than adults think.

Especially when the adults are terrible at hiding their fear.

“What makes you ask that?””

“Because yesterday I heard you two arguing.””

I looked away.

He continued.

“And today he wouldn’t look at me.””

My chest tightened.

I sat beside him.

“There are things about our family that you don’t know.””

Noah laughed quietly.

“Apparently, everyone knows things except me.””

The pain in his voice almost broke me.

“You’re right to be angry.””

He looked at me.

“You’re not denying it.””

I swallowed.

“No.””

A long silence passed.

Then Noah asked:

“Do I have a sister?””

My heart stopped.

I didn’t know what to say.

“How did you know?””

He looked down.

“Dad’s old laptop.””

“What?””

“I found a folder.””

My blood ran cold.

“What folder?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked at me.

“It was locked.””

“Did you open it?””

“No.””

I exhaled.

“Good.””

“But I saw the name.””

“What name?””

He answered softly.

“Lily.””

The world felt like it was moving too fast.

Before I could respond, headlights appeared at the end of the driveway.

A car stopped.

An older woman stepped out.

I didn’t recognize her.

But she recognized me.

She walked toward us slowly.

“Emma Carter?””

I stood.

“Who are you?””

The woman looked at Noah.

Then at me.

“My name is Susan Miller.””

The name meant nothing.

Until she added:

“I worked at the hospital the night Noah and Lily were born.””

My entire body went still.

“You were there?””

She nodded.

“I was one of the nurses.””

Noah stood up.

“What is happening?””

I reached for his hand.

“Susan, why are you here?””

Her face was full of regret.

“Because I should have come years ago.””

Daniel’s car suddenly appeared behind hers.

He stepped out.

And when he saw Susan, all the color left his face.

“You.””

Susan looked at him.

“Yes, Daniel.””

The anger in her voice was unmistakable.

“You never thought I would talk.””

Daniel walked toward us.

“Leave.””

Susan shook her head.

“Not this time.””

I looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Susan opened her bag.

Then pulled out an old hospital document.

“I kept this because I knew one day the truth would need to come out.””

Daniel’s voice became sharp.

“Susan, don’t.””

She ignored him.

She handed the paper to me.

“This is the original birth record.””

I looked down.

Two names.

Two babies.

Two sets of information.

Then I saw the section Daniel had hidden.

The father’s name.

My hands began to shake.

Because it wasn’t Daniel Carter.

It was someone else.

Someone whose name I recognized.

Someone who explained why my mother had hidden the photograph.

I looked up at Susan.

“Why did my mother know about this?””

Susan’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because your mother was the one who helped Rachel discover the truth.””

I stared at her.

“What truth?””

Susan looked at Noah.

Then at the document.

And whispered:

“The man who raised you was never the only person fighting to control your life.””

I held the paper tighter.

“Who was Noah’s real father?””

Susan took a breath.

May you like

Then she said the name.

And everything I believed about my family collapsed.
