Chapter 8: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

I couldn’t speak.

Daniel’s words sat between us like something alive.

Rachel wasn’t searching for revenge.

She wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.

She was trying to find her daughter.

And somehow, that search ended with her death.

“You told me Rachel died in a car accident.””

Daniel looked down.

“She did.””

“But you said it was random.””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

His silence was enough.

“You knew there was more.””

“Yes.””

My hands started shaking.

“What happened?””

Daniel sat back down.

“After Lily was adopted, Rachel changed.””

“How?””

“She stopped trusting people.””

“Because you took her daughter away.””

He flinched.

“Yes.””

“And then?””

“She started investigating.””

“Investigating what?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“The adoption.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because she discovered documents that didn’t make sense.””

“What documents?””

“Lily’s adoption papers.””

My heart raced.

“The ones you signed?””

“Yes.””

“What was wrong with them?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Rachel found out the adoption agency was connected to someone from my family.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“My father knew people in the legal system.””

The room felt smaller.

“You used your family’s influence to hide your daughter.””

Daniel didn’t deny it.

“I was desperate.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were controlling.””

He looked away.

“Rachel threatened to expose everything.””

“And then she died.””

Daniel’s face changed.

Not guilt.

Fear.

“I didn’t kill her.””

I froze.

“I never said you did.””

“But you were thinking it.””

I didn’t answer.

Because I was.

Not because I believed he murdered Rachel.

But because every truth I discovered led to another locked door.

“Who was responsible?””

Daniel stood.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“No.””

“Then why are you afraid?””

He looked at me.

“Because the person who helped hide Lily’s adoption is still out there.””

My phone suddenly rang.

Lily.

I answered immediately.

“Lily?””

Her voice was rushed.

“Emma, I found something.””

“What?””

“I opened the box Daniel gave me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What box?””

“The one with Rachel’s letters.””

I sat down.

“What did you find?””

“A letter that wasn’t from my mother.””

“Who was it from?””

Lily paused.

“Your mother.””

I stopped breathing.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

That was impossible.

My mother had never mentioned Rachel.

Never mentioned Daniel’s first marriage.

Never mentioned a missing child.

“How would she know?””

“I don’t know.””

My heart pounded.

“What does the letter say?””

Lily’s voice became quiet.

“It says your mother knew about me.””

The world seemed to tilt.

“My mother?””

“Yes.””

I looked around my childhood home.

The same home where my mother had kept the jewelry box.

The same jewelry box where the photograph had been hidden.

Suddenly, I understood.

The photograph wasn’t hidden because my mother forgot about it.

She kept it.

She protected it.

“Lily, read me the letter.””

There was a pause.

Then Lily began.

“Dear Lily, I don’t know if you will ever read this…”

I closed my eyes.

“She wrote that she was sorry.””

“Sorry for what?””

Lily continued.

“She said she tried to tell Emma the truth.””

My heart stopped.

“She said Daniel convinced everyone to stay silent.””

I whispered:

“Everyone?””

Lily’s voice trembled.

“She mentioned another person.””

“Who?””

A long silence.

Then:

“Rachel’s doctor.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because he was the one who discovered the truth about your family.””

I stood.

“What truth?””

Lily answered:

“The reason Daniel was never Noah’s real father.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“No.””

“Emma…”

“No.””

Because suddenly everything changed.

The adoption.

The lies.

The missing records.

The separation.

It wasn’t only about Lily.

It wasn’t only about Daniel’s betrayal.

There was another truth buried underneath everything.

A truth my mother had died protecting.

“Lily,” I whispered.

“Yes?””

“Send me the letter.””

“I will.””

My phone buzzed.

A message arrived.

But it wasn’t from Lily.

It was from an unknown number.

May you like

The message contained only one sentence.

*Stop digging into Rachel’s death, or Noah will learn the truth before you are ready.*
