Chapter 11: Rachel’s Final Message

We listened to the recording that night.

Not in the living room.

Not where Daniel could interrupt.

I took Noah, Susan, and Lily’s voice on speaker from my phone into my mother’s old bedroom.

The same room where I had found the photograph.

The same room where the truth had been waiting.

Noah sat beside me.

He hadn’t spoken much since Susan arrived.

He looked older.

Not sixteen.

Older.

Like one day had taken years from him.

Susan placed the device on the table.

“Rachel recorded this twenty-four hours before she died.””

I pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow, I immediately knew.

Rachel.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened to me.””

Noah looked down.

His jaw tightened.

Rachel continued.

“I don’t know who I can trust anymore.””

A pause.

Then a shaky breath.

“Daniel believes he is protecting the children. But he doesn’t understand that hiding the truth is hurting them more than the truth ever could.””

Daniel.

Even after everything.

Rachel still wasn’t trying to destroy him.

She was trying to explain him.

“My daughter Lily deserves to know she was loved.””

Noah closed his eyes.

“And my son Noah deserves to know he has a sister.””

I reached for his hand.

He didn’t pull away.

Rachel’s voice became softer.

“There is something else I discovered.””

Everyone became still.

“Michael is Noah’s biological father.””

Noah’s face changed.

But he kept listening.

“I know this will hurt people. I know there will be anger. But Noah is innocent.

Lily is innocent. They should never be punished for the mistakes of adults.””

A long silence followed.

Then Rachel said the words that made Daniel cover his face.

“Daniel, if you are listening to this, please understand something. You were given a chance to love two children. Not own them.””

Nobody spoke.

The recording continued.

“I found proof that the adoption papers were changed after I signed them.””

Susan looked down.

My heart stopped.

Changed?

“What does that mean?”” Noah whispered.

I didn’t answer.

Because Rachel was about to explain.

“Someone altered the documents to make it appear that Lily had no surviving family.””

The room went cold.

Someone.

Not just Daniel.

Someone else.

Rachel continued.

“I found the person responsible.””

The recording suddenly became quieter.

“I kept their name in a separate file because I was afraid.””

My heart raced.

Then Rachel said:

“If anything happens to me, the person who did this is the reason.””

The recording ended.

Silence.

Nobody moved.

Noah finally spoke.

“Who was it?””

Susan looked at me.

“I don’t know.””

Daniel stood.

“We need to stop this.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“Emma, this has gone too far.””

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“It went too far sixteen years ago.””

Daniel looked desperate.

“You don’t understand what you’re dealing with.””

I stood.

“Then tell me.””

He said nothing.

“Tell me who changed the documents.””

Still nothing.

That was the moment I realized something.

Daniel wasn’t hiding the truth because he didn’t know it.

He was hiding it because he did.

My phone suddenly rang.

Lily.

I answered.

“Lily?””

Her voice was shaking.

“Emma, I found something in Rachel’s letters.””

“What?””

“A name.””

My heart pounded.

“Whose?””

She took a breath.

“The person who helped Daniel hide everything.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was staring at my phone.

Like he already knew.

“Tell me.””

Lily whispered:

“It was your mother.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

“She wrote that your mother helped arrange the adoption.””

I couldn’t speak.

My mother.

The woman who raised me.

The woman whose jewelry box started all of this.

“No…”

Lily continued.

“But there’s something strange.””

“What?””

“She didn’t help Daniel.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Her voice lowered.

“Because your mother was trying to protect Lily from someone else.””

I gripped the phone.

“Who?””

A pause.

May you like

Then Lily answered.

“The same person Rachel was afraid of.””
