Chapter 13: The Man Behind The Curtain
Daniel stared at the photograph on my phone.
For several seconds, he didn’t move.
He didn’t ask who sent it.
He didn’t ask when it was taken.
He simply looked at Noah’s picture and whispered:
“He found you.””
The words sent a chill through me.
I stood up.
“Who found us?””
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time since I had discovered the photograph, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not guilt.
Not fear of being exposed.
Fear for us.
“Victor.””
The name felt heavier now.
“Tell me everything.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I can’t explain this here.””
I almost laughed.
“Still?””
He looked toward Noah.
That was when I understood.
He wasn’t trying to protect himself.
Not this time.
He was afraid Noah would hear.
“No more secrets,” I said.
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I met Victor years before I met you.””
“Through Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“After the twins were born, Rachel was struggling. She was angry at me. Angry at herself. Angry at the world.””
I folded my arms.
“And Victor?””
“He offered help.””
I looked at him.
“People like that always do.””
Daniel nodded.
“I didn’t see it at first.””
“See what?””
“That he wasn’t helping.””
The room became quiet.
“He was collecting information.””
“About Rachel?””
“About the twins.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because Victor believed there was something special about our family.””
“Special?””
Daniel hesitated.
“The genetic marker.””
I remembered the medical report.
The one that had caused all this pain.
“The one you used as an excuse.””
His face tightened.
“Yes.””
“But it wasn’t a disease.””
“No.””
“Then what was Victor interested in?””
Daniel looked at me.
“He thought it could make him wealthy.””
I stared.
“What?””
“Victor worked with private medical companies. He believed the genetic information from the twins could be used for research.””
My stomach turned.
“So Lily and Noah weren’t children to him.””
“No.””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“They were opportunities.””
I looked at the photograph again.
Two babies.
Two lives.
Two people who had been treated like secrets instead of humans.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Daniel looked away.
“Because I made a deal with him.””
The confession hit harder than I expected.
“What deal?””
“He promised to keep the adoption quiet.””
My voice became cold.
“You let him take Lily.””
“I thought I was preventing something worse.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
For once, he didn’t argue.
“I was angry. I was hurt. I wanted Rachel to feel the pain I felt.””
The honesty almost made me angrier.
“Lily paid for that.””
“I know.””
“Noah paid for that.””
“I know.””
“And Rachel?””
Daniel looked down.
“I know.””
The door behind us opened.
Noah stood there.
I froze.
I didn’t know how long he had been listening.
His face was pale.
“How much?””
Daniel stood immediately.
“Noah…”
“How much of my life was fake?””
The question broke everyone.
Daniel stepped forward.
“I love you.””
Noah laughed quietly.
“That’s not an answer.””
Daniel stopped.
“You raised me.””
“Yes.””
“But you weren’t my father.””
Daniel looked devastated.
“I was.””
“No.””
Noah shook his head.
“You were someone who knew the truth and decided I wasn’t strong enough to handle it.””
I wanted to say something.
Anything.
But Noah looked at me.
And I knew he needed honesty more than comfort.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
His eyes filled.
“Did you know?””
“No.””
“When did you find out?””
“After I found the photograph.””
He nodded slowly.
“So everyone lied.””
“Noah…”
“Everyone.””
He walked away.
I wanted to follow him.
But my phone rang.
Lily.
I answered.
Her voice was urgent.
“Emma, you need to leave the house.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I found Victor.””
“How?””
“He contacted me.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What did he say?””
Lily was silent.
Then:
“He said Daniel was never the person who destroyed our family.””
I looked toward the hallway where Noah disappeared.
“What did he mean?””
May you like
Lily whispered:
“He said Daniel was only following orders.””
