Chapter 6: The Daughter Daniel Tried To Forget

I didn’t tell Noah immediately.

Not because I wanted to protect Daniel.

Because I needed to protect my son.

There was a difference.

For sixteen years, Noah had lived with one version of his life.

A version where his family made sense.

Where his father was honest.

Where his mother knew everything.

Now I had to decide whether revealing the truth would heal him or break him.

But one thing was certain.

He deserved the choice.

The next evening, I sat across from Daniel in the living room.

The photograph was between us.

“You adopted Lily.””

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.””

“Not just Noah.””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

My hands curled into fists.

“So when Rachel died, you became the father of both children.””

Daniel’s face tightened.

“I tried.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You erased one.””

His eyes filled.

“I didn’t want to.””

“But you did.””

The room was silent.

Finally, Daniel whispered:

“I loved her.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did you abandon her?””

He looked toward the window.

“Because I believed the doctors.””

“The doctors said she might develop problems.””

“Yes.””

“Not that she would.””

“No.””

I leaned forward.

“Then tell me the real reason.””

Daniel didn’t answer.

And again, I saw it.

That hesitation.

That fear.

There was still something he wasn’t saying.

“You’re still hiding something.””

He looked at me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“This entire story has been built on things you refused to say.””

Daniel stood and walked to the bookshelf.

He pulled out an old envelope.

“I never wanted you to see this.””

Inside was a letter.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

“Who wrote this?””

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“Rachel.””

I unfolded it.

The paper was worn.

The ink had faded.

But the words were clear.

Daniel,

If anything happens to me, please don’t let fear decide what happens to our children.

Noah and Lily belong together.

They deserve the truth.

I stopped reading.

My chest tightened.

Rachel had known.

She had tried to stop him.

Daniel watched my face.

“She wrote that before she died.””

“Why didn’t you listen?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

I looked at him.

“Everyone keeps saying that like it excuses everything.””

“It doesn’t.””

“No.””

I folded the letter.

“It doesn’t.””

The next morning, Noah came downstairs while I was making coffee.

He looked at me.

“Mom?””

I turned.

He immediately noticed something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I forced a smile.

“Nothing.””

But Noah knew me too well.

“Don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend everything is okay.””

I looked at my son.

The boy who had unknowingly spent his whole life missing someone.

I opened my mouth.

Then closed it.

Because before I could speak, my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lily.

I opened it.

There was a photograph attached.

My heart stopped.

It was a picture of Lily as an adult.

But she wasn’t alone.

Standing beside her was a man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Daniel.

The message below said:

*“Emma, I think you need to know what happened the last time Daniel visited me.””*

I stared at the screen.

Then another message appeared.

*“He didn’t come to warn me about Noah.””*

My breathing stopped.

May you like

A third message arrived.

*“He came because he was afraid I would discover who my biological father really was.””*
