Chapter 14: The Truth Rachel Died For

We met Lily the next morning.

For the first time, I saw her face in person.

And the strangest thing happened.

I didn’t see a stranger.

I saw pieces of Noah.

The same expression when she was confused.

The same way she tilted her head when she was thinking.

The same nervous habit of touching her fingers together.

The twins who had been separated before they could remember each other were still connected.

I understood that immediately.

Lily looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

“For bringing more pain into your family.””

I shook my head.

“You didn’t do anything wrong.””

She looked down.

“Everyone always says that.””

“Because it’s true.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Noah walked in.

He stopped when he saw her.

The room became silent.

Two people who had spent sixteen years existing separately were finally standing in the same place.

Noah stared.

“You’re real.””

Lily smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

He looked away.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to say.””

“Neither do I.””

That was the most honest thing anyone had said.

They didn’t hug.

They didn’t suddenly become a perfect family.

They just sat together.

Two siblings learning the shape of a missing piece.

Then Lily placed a folder on the table.

“This is everything Victor sent me.””

Inside were documents.

Photos.

Records.

My mother’s name appeared again.

“What is this?””

Lily pointed.

“Your mother was helping Rachel build a case.””

Against Victor.

Against Daniel.

Against everyone who had controlled the truth.

“She knew.””

“Yes.””

“But why didn’t she tell me?””

Lily looked at me.

“Because Rachel asked her not to.””

I frowned.

“Why?””

“Because Rachel believed you were safer not knowing.””

I hated hearing that.

Because it sounded like Daniel.

Like every person who claimed hiding the truth was love.

“What happened to Rachel?””

Lily opened another document.

A police report.

“I found this.””

I read it.

My hands trembled.

The official report said Rachel died in a car accident.

But attached notes revealed something else.

Rachel’s vehicle had been tampered with.

Someone had cut the brake line.

My breath stopped.

“She was murdered?””

Lily nodded.

“And Victor knows who did it.””

“Where is he?””

Lily looked at Noah.

“He wants to meet us.””

“No.””

Daniel’s voice came from behind us.

Everyone turned.

He stood there.

Exhausted.

Broken.

“You can’t go.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to decide that anymore.””

Daniel ignored me.

“Victor is dangerous.””

Noah looked at him.

“You knew?””

Daniel’s eyes lowered.

“Yes.””

The betrayal on Noah’s face was unbearable.

“You knew Rachel was murdered?””

Daniel whispered:

“I suspected.””

“You suspected?””

“I was trying to find proof.””

“For sixteen years?””

Daniel looked at his son.

“I failed.””

Noah shook his head.

“You didn’t fail.””

His voice cracked.

“You chose.””

Daniel had no answer.

Then Lily’s phone rang.

She answered.

A few seconds later, her face changed.

“What?””

We all looked at her.

She ended the call.

“Victor wants us to meet tonight.””

“Where?””

She looked at the message.

“Rachel’s old house.””

My stomach tightened.

The house where the twins were born.

The place where everything began.

Then another message appeared.

Not from Victor.

From an unknown number.

A single sentence.

*Ask Daniel what happened after Rachel discovered the second adoption file.*

I looked at Daniel.

He went completely still.

Because I knew.

There was still one more secret.

The one he had never confessed.
