Chapter 12: The Person Behind The Lie
I didn’t sleep.
Again.
It felt like my entire life had become a series of nights where the truth arrived one piece at a time.
Every answer created another question.
Every secret opened another door.
By sunrise, I was sitting at my mother’s old desk, searching through everything she left behind.
Letters.
Documents.
Photographs.
Anything.
Because if my mother knew Rachel, there had to be something.
And eventually, I found it.
Hidden beneath the bottom drawer.
A small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not recently.
Years ago.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My mother’s handwriting.
Emma,
If you are reading this, it means the truth finally found you.
I stopped.
My mother had known.
She had expected this day.
I continued.
I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you everything while I was alive.
I wanted to protect you.
But protection became another kind of silence, and I now know silence can hurt people too.
Tears filled my eyes.
The next sentence made me stop.
Daniel was never the person you should have feared most.
I looked up.
Then who?
I read on.
When Rachel came to me after Lily’s adoption, she wasn’t asking for help getting her daughter back.
She was asking me to help keep Lily safe.
My breathing slowed.
Safe from who?
My mother answered.
The person who arranged the adoption was not Daniel.
It was someone with power.
Someone who wanted control over Rachel’s children.
Someone who knew what Noah and Lily represented.
I turned the page.
And there was a name.
I froze.
Because I knew it.
Everyone in town knew it.
A respected businessman.
A man whose name appeared on hospital donations.
A man who was always praised for helping families.
A man Daniel had spent years calling a friend.
Victor Bennett.
Lily’s adoptive father.
I dropped the letter.
“No.””
My mother’s letter continued.
Victor believed he was saving Lily.
He believed he was giving her a better life.
But Rachel discovered he was never supposed to adopt her.
He wanted access to something connected to her birth.
Something connected to her bloodline.
I read the sentence again.
Bloodline.
The same word everyone had avoided.
I immediately called Lily.
She answered quickly.
“Did you find something?””
“Yes.””
My voice trembled.
“Your adoptive father.””
Silence.
“What about him?””
“His name is Victor Bennett.””
Lily didn’t respond.
“Lily?””
When she finally spoke, her voice was barely audible.
“I know.””
My heart stopped.
“You know?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because he disappeared two years ago.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“After I found out I was adopted, I confronted him.””
“What did he say?””
Lily hesitated.
“He said Daniel wasn’t the only person who lied to me.””
I looked at the letter.
“Where is Victor now?””
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
Unknown number.
This time, there was a picture attached.
It was a photo of Noah.
Taken that morning.
Outside our house.
My blood turned cold.
The message said:
*You found the wrong person to blame.*
Another message appeared.
*Ask Daniel why Victor Bennett was the only man he ever trusted.*
I looked across the room.
Daniel was standing in the doorway.
And he had seen the message.
His face turned completely pale.
May you like
Because this time, he didn’t look afraid of the past.
He looked afraid of what was coming next.
