Chapter 7: The Truth Behind Rachel’s Secret
I read Lily’s message five times before I could make sense of the words.
*He was afraid I would discover who my biological father really was.*
My fingers went cold around my phone.
Because Daniel had always told me the story of Rachel’s life.
He told me she was his first wife.
He told me their marriage ended because they were young and unhappy.
He told me the twins were the only children they ever had.
But he had never once mentioned another man.
I looked at the photograph Lily sent again.
Daniel stood beside her outside what looked like a small apartment building.
The date on the image was only two years earlier.
Daniel had visited Lily.
Not once.
Not by accident.
He had gone to her.
“What is it?””
Noah’s voice made me jump.
I quickly locked my phone.
“Nothing.””
He studied me.
“You’ve been saying that a lot lately.””
I forced myself to smile.
“Go get ready for school.””
But Noah didn’t move.
He was sixteen.
Old enough to notice when adults were lying.
Old enough to understand that something was wrong.
“Mom.””
The way he said my name broke my heart.
Because he sounded afraid.
I walked toward him and touched his shoulder.
“I promise I’ll explain everything.””
“When?””
I looked at him.
“Soon.””
It was the same word Daniel had used for sixteen years.
Soon.
A word people used when they wanted to delay the truth.
After Noah left, I called Lily.
She answered immediately.
“Did you see the picture?””
“Yes.””
“I knew you would have questions.””
“Why didn’t you tell me this before?””
“Because I didn’t know if I could trust you.””
The answer hurt.
But I understood.
Trust was something Daniel had destroyed for everyone.
“What did Daniel say when he visited you?””
Lily was quiet.
Then she sighed.
“He came to my apartment when I was twenty-one.””
“Why?””
“He said he wanted to make sure I was doing okay.””
I closed my eyes.
“And?””
“He brought a box.””
“What was inside?””
“Letters.””
My heart skipped.
“From who?””
“My birth mother.””
Rachel.
The name hung between us.
“What kind of letters?””
“Letters she wrote after I was adopted.””
I sat down.
“Lily, if Rachel knew where you were…”
“She did.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Rachel knew.””
The room became silent.
“Then why didn’t she come for you?””
Lily’s voice softened.
“Because Daniel told her she couldn’t.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“He lied to her too?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Lily took a breath.
“He told Rachel the adoption was final. He told her contacting me would destroy my future. He said I would grow up happier if I never knew about the family I lost.””
I looked around my house.
The place where Daniel had built an entire life on hidden truths.
“He controlled everything.””
“Yes.””
My voice lowered.
“Why?””
Lily was silent for several seconds.
Then she answered.
“Because Rachel discovered something after we were born.””
“What?””
“She found out Daniel wasn’t my biological father.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
I stood immediately.
“No.””
“I know.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Emma, I have the documents.””
I remembered the medical report.
The genetic testing.
The panic.
The reason Daniel separated the twins.
Not because they were sick.
Because the truth about their bloodline could destroy him.
“Who was your father?””
“I don’t know.””
“But Daniel knew?””
“Yes.””
My mind raced.
Every conversation.
Every lie.
Every missing piece.
“Why didn’t he tell Noah?””
“Because Noah was his legal son.””
I swallowed.
“And you?””
“I was proof.””
“Proof of what?””
Lily’s voice cracked.
“That Daniel had built his entire life around a lie.””
I drove to Daniel’s office that afternoon.
I didn’t call first.
I didn’t give him time to prepare another explanation.
When I walked inside, his assistant looked surprised.
“Mrs. Carter?””
“I need to see Daniel.””
“He’s in a meeting.””
“I’ll wait.””
She looked at my face and immediately understood.
Five minutes later, Daniel appeared.
The moment he saw me, his expression changed.
“What happened?””
I held up my phone.
“Tell me about Lily’s father.””
Daniel stopped breathing.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You knew.””
“Emma…”
“You knew.””
He looked around.
“Not here.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“Not another secret room. Not another locked door. Not another conversation where you decide what I’m allowed to know.””
Daniel closed his office door.
Then he whispered:
“Rachel wasn’t faithful.””
I stared at him.
“That’s your explanation?””
“It’s the truth.””
“Did you know before the twins were born?””
“No.””
“Then when?””
“After.””
I crossed my arms.
“After the test?””
Daniel looked away.
“Yes.””
The pieces finally connected.
“The genetic report.””
He nodded.
“Rachel confessed.””
I felt sick.
“What happened?””
Daniel sat down.
“She was afraid.””
“So you punished Lily?””
His face fell.
“No.””
“Yes.””
I stepped closer.
“You took a baby away from her mother.””
“I thought Rachel would leave.””
“She wanted her daughter.””
“I know.””
“Then why?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Because I was angry.””
There it was.
Not fear.
Not protection.
Anger.
A choice.
A selfish, painful choice.
“I wanted to erase everything that reminded me.””
I looked at him.
“You mean Lily.””
He nodded.
“And Noah?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“Noah was innocent.””
“Both of them were.””
The room went quiet.
Then Daniel said something that made my blood run cold.
“There’s another reason I kept them apart.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“Because if Noah and Lily ever found out the truth, they would discover what really happened the night Rachel died.””
My heart stopped.
“What happened?””
Daniel looked toward the window.
And for the first time, he looked genuinely terrified.
“Rachel didn’t die from an accident.””
I whispered:
“Then how did she die?””
May you like
Daniel closed his eyes.
“She was trying to find Lily.””
