Chapter 5: The Girl Who Was Erased
Finding Lily became the only thing I could think about.
I stopped caring about Daniel’s excuses.
I stopped caring about the years he stole from all of us.
There was a person out there who had spent her entire life missing pieces of herself.
And I needed to know where those pieces went.
Three days after the hospital meeting, Daniel finally admitted something.
He was sitting at the kitchen table when I came home.
A stack of old papers was in front of him.
“I found her,” he said.
I froze.
“What?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“I found Lily.””
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe.
“Where?””
He pushed the papers toward me.
“She was adopted by a couple in another state.””
I stared at the address.
A woman named Lily Bennett.
Twenty-six years old.
My hands shook.
“She’s alive.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
The anger inside me returned.
“You knew.””
He looked down.
“I knew she was alive.””
“And you still did nothing?””
His eyes closed.
“I checked on her.””
My voice rose.
“You checked on her?””
“I wanted to know she was okay.””
“You watched her life from a distance while keeping her away from her brother?””
Daniel had no answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
I picked up the papers.
“Why didn’t you tell Noah?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Because I didn’t know what would happen.””
“What would happen?””
He stood.
“Emma, you don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He ran his hand through his hair.
“When Noah was born, Rachel and I were told the condition might affect one or both children later.””
“Might.””
“Yes.””
“Not would.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“So you punished two children because you were afraid of something that might never happen?””
Daniel’s eyes filled.
“I thought I was protecting Noah.””
I looked at him.
“No. You were protecting yourself.””
The words hurt him because they were true.
That night, I called Lily.
Not as her mother.
Not as someone trying to fix the past.
Just as someone who knew a piece of her story.
The phone rang six times.
Then a woman answered.
“Hello?””
Her voice was soft.
I froze.
Because there was something familiar about it.
Something I couldn’t explain.
“Hi. Is this Lily Bennett?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Emma Carter.””
Silence.
“Okay…”
“I know this is strange.””
A nervous laugh came through the phone.
“That’s one way to describe it.””
I looked at the photograph beside me.
“There’s something I need to tell you.””
“About what?””
I closed my eyes.
“Your birth.””
The line went completely silent.
Then Lily whispered:
“How do you know about that?””
My heart stopped.
“You knew?””
A long pause.
Then she said something I never expected.
“I’ve been looking for my twin brother for years.””
I gripped the phone.
“Your twin brother?””
“Yes.””
“Lily…”
My voice broke.
“His name is Noah.””
I heard a sharp breath.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, that’s not possible.””
“Why?””
Her voice trembled.
“Because my adoption records said my twin brother died.””
I looked at the papers.
The fake death record.
The missing certificate.
The sealed file.
Someone hadn’t just hidden Lily.
Someone had rewritten her entire history.
“Lily,” I whispered.
“There’s something you need to know.””
“What?””
I looked toward the hallway where Noah’s bedroom was.
“The man who raised your brother knew you were alive.””
Silence.
Then Lily asked the question I knew would come.
“Who?””
I swallowed.
“His name is Daniel Carter.””
The line went quiet.
Then Lily’s voice changed.
“You mean…”
“What?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Daniel Carter was the man who adopted me.””
I felt the room spin.
“What did you say?””
Lily’s voice was barely audible.
“He didn’t just hide me from Noah.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“What are you talking about?””
“He was supposed to tell me about my real family when I turned eighteen.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“But he never did.””
I looked at Daniel’s empty chair.
“Why?””
Lily answered.
“Because when I was eighteen, he came to see me.””
My heart raced.
“And he told me something.””
“What?””
May you like
Her voice cracked.
“He said if I ever contacted Noah, I would destroy his life.””
