Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden In The Blood

“The twins were never supposed to grow up believing they were strangers.””

Dr. Harris’s words stayed in my mind long after the call ended.

I lowered the phone slowly.

Daniel was still standing across the room, watching me.

He didn’t ask what the doctor said.

He already knew.

That was when I realized something even more painful than the secret itself.

Daniel hadn’t just hidden the truth.

He had been waiting for the truth to find me.

“Emma…”

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

His face tightened.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

And somehow, that scared him more than if I had screamed.

“You’ve had sixteen years to explain.””

I walked toward the door.

“Where are you going?””

“To find out what you refused to tell me.””

Daniel stepped in front of me.

“Emma, please. You don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

I looked at him.

“Neither did Lily.””

The name hit him like a physical blow.

For the first time, I saw the weight of what he had done.

Not the paperwork.

Not the lies.

The person.

A little girl who had once been carried out of a hospital through a private exit while her brother stayed behind.

A little girl who grew up without knowing she had a twin.

I left before Daniel could stop me.

The next morning, I met Dr. Harris in a quiet conference room at the hospital.

He placed a thick folder on the table.

“This was sealed for sixteen years.””

I looked at it.

“Why?””

“Because the original request came from a legal guardian.””

“Daniel.””

He nodded.

“He had authority over Noah’s records after Rachel’s death.””

My stomach tightened.

“Rachel died when?””

“Three years after the twins were born.””

I looked down.

That meant Rachel had known.

She had lived with the truth.

She had known she had a daughter somewhere.

“Did Rachel agree to the adoption?””

Dr. Harris looked uncomfortable.

“That’s complicated.””

I hated that word.

Everyone used it when the truth was ugly.

“What does that mean?””

He opened the folder.

“Rachel signed documents, but there are notes indicating she was under extreme emotional pressure.””

“From Daniel?””

Dr. Harris didn’t answer directly.

Instead, he slid another document toward me.

“This is the medical report.””

I read the first lines.

Then my eyes stopped.

The report was about a genetic condition.

But not the kind I expected.

The twins were healthy.

Both Noah and Lily were physically fine.

The concern was something else.

A rare inherited marker had been discovered in both children.

A marker connected to their biological father.

I looked up.

“That’s it?””

Dr. Harris nodded.

“That’s what caused the panic.””

“But why?””

He leaned back.

“Because the results suggested Rachel’s previous medical history was incomplete.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“It means there was information about the family’s genetics that had been hidden.””

I looked at the report again.

“And Daniel knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Dr. Harris sighed.

“Because he requested additional testing after the twins were born.””

I felt anger rising.

“He tested his own children?””

“He was scared.””

I almost laughed.

Everyone kept defending Daniel’s fear.

Nobody talked about Lily’s.

“What did the test reveal?””

Dr. Harris pointed to a paragraph.

“The twins carried a genetic condition that could appear later in life.””

“Could?””

“Yes. Could.””

“So they weren’t sick?””

“No.””

“Then why separate them?””

Dr. Harris was silent.

And that silence told me everything.

Because there was no medical reason.

There was only fear.

I closed the folder.

“Where is Lily now?””

Dr. Harris looked at me.

“That information is in the adoption file.””

My heart started racing.

“Then open it.””

His expression changed.

“I can’t.””

“Why?””

“Because the file was sealed by court order.””

I stood.

“Then unseal it.””

“It’s not that simple.””

I stared at him.

“My son has spent his entire life without knowing he has a sister.””

I picked up the photograph.

“And somewhere out there is a woman who grew up without knowing she had a brother.””

Dr. Harris looked at the picture.

Then he quietly said:

“There may be something else you need to know.””

“What?””

He hesitated.

“The adoption wasn’t closed because Lily was unwanted.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“Then why?””

May you like

He looked directly at me.

“Because someone wanted to make sure she could never find her way back.””
