Chapter 9: The Truth She Buried

The video stopped.

I sat completely still.

My father looked at me.

“James?””

I didn’t answer.

Because one sentence had changed everything.

The truth about Lily’s mother.

Vanessa knew something.

Something about the woman I had loved.

Something about the mother my daughter still missed every day.

I replayed the video.

Again.

And again.

But there was nothing else.

Only that sentence.

Rachel arrived thirty minutes later.

She looked at the flash drive.

“This is unusual.””

“What do you mean?””

“People don’t usually record private conversations unless they’re trying to control the narrative.””

“She wanted evidence.””

“Yes.””

Rachel looked at the screen.

“But the question is why.””

I stared at the frozen image of Vanessa.

“She wanted to use my daughter’s mother against me.””

Rachel nodded.

“Then we need to find out what she knows.””

The next morning, I contacted my late wife’s old attorney.

His name was Michael Hayes.

He agreed to meet us.

When I walked into his office, he immediately recognized Lily.

“Emily’s daughter.””

I smiled sadly.

“Yeah.””

He looked at her.

“She has her mother’s eyes.””

Lily smiled.

The first real smile I had seen in days.

Michael opened a file.

“I assume this is about Vanessa.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

His expression became serious.

“Because she contacted me.””

“When?””

“Six months ago.””

My heart sank.

“What did she ask?””

Michael folded his hands.

“She wanted information about Emily’s estate.””

“Why would she need that?””

“She said she was preparing to marry you.””

“And you gave it to her?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I told her only you had authority.””

I nodded slowly.

“What else?””

Michael looked uncomfortable.

“She asked about Lily’s mother.””

“What about her?””

“She asked if Emily had left anything that could affect custody.””

My blood went cold.

“She was investigating.””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“Did my wife know Vanessa?””

Michael looked confused.

“No.””

“Then why was Vanessa so interested?””

He opened another folder.

“I found something strange.””

“What?””

“Someone accessed old legal documents connected to Emily.””

“When?””

“Four months ago.””

“Who?””

He pushed the paper toward me.

The name was printed clearly.

*Vanessa Reed.*

I stared at it.

She had been digging.

Long before the wedding.

Long before she claimed to love Lily.

“She knew about the trust before I did.””

Michael nodded.

“Yes.””

Lily was sitting beside me quietly.

Then she spoke.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“Is Mommy in trouble?””

My heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Then why does Vanessa talk about her?””

I didn’t know how to answer.

Because I didn’t know.

That night, after Lily fell asleep, I searched through old messages.

I looked for anything Vanessa had ever said about Emily.

Anything I ignored.

And then I found it.

A message from Vanessa eight months earlier.

I had forgotten about it.

She wrote:

“Sometimes I wonder if Lily would be happier without all the memories of the past.””

At the time, I thought she meant healing.

Moving forward.

Now I understood.

She wanted Lily to forget.

The next morning, Rachel called.

“James.””

Her voice sounded urgent.

“What happened?””

“We found something in Vanessa’s financial records.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“She wasn’t just interested in Lily’s trust.””

“What else?””

“She was looking for something else.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then Rachel said:

“Your wife’s life insurance policy.””

I felt my blood run cold.

“Emily’s?””

“Yes.””

“But that money belongs to Lily.””

“I know.””

I stood up.

“Rachel, what are you saying?””

“I’m saying Vanessa may have had a reason to get close to your daughter.””

The room went silent.

Then my phone received a message.

From Vanessa.

One picture.

A document.

The title:

*Guardianship Transfer Agreement.*

And underneath it, one sentence:

“Sign this, and Lily stays with me.””

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then another message appeared.

“You don’t want to know what happens if you refuse.””
