Chapter 11: The Conversation I Was Never Meant to Hear

I watched the video again.

Then again.

I wanted my brain to be wrong.

But it wasn’t.

The person sitting across from Vanessa was my father.

Daniel Carter.

The man who had hugged Lily the day she was born.

The man who had held me together after Emily died.

The man who told me family was everything.

He was sitting across from Vanessa in a coffee shop.

Talking.

I turned up the volume.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“James is starting to see the truth.””

My father looked uncomfortable.

“You promised this would be handled quietly.””

My entire body went still.

Handled?

Quietly?

Vanessa smiled.

“I’m handling it.””

My father looked down.

“This has gone too far.””

“No.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“It’s almost finished.””

I paused the video.

My hands were trembling.

I called my father.

He answered quickly.

“James?””

“Where are you?””

A long silence.

“What happened?””

“Answer me.””

Another pause.

“I’m home.””

“I’m coming over.””

When I arrived, he opened the door before I knocked.

He already knew.

I walked inside.

“Why?””

My father looked away.

“James…”

“Why were you meeting Vanessa?””

He didn’t answer.

That was enough.

I pulled out my phone.

I played the video.

His face changed.

After ten seconds, he lowered his head.

“I can explain.””

“Then explain.””

He sat down.

“She came to me because she was worried.””

“Worried?””

“Yes.””

“About Lily?””

He didn’t respond.

I laughed quietly.

“Of course.””

“James, listen.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I listened for months.””

He looked at me.

“I made mistakes.””

“Why did you help her?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“From what?””

My father looked devastated.

“From losing your life.””

I stared at him.

“What does that mean?””

“She told me you were drowning.””

My jaw tightened.

“She said Lily was keeping you trapped.””

The words hurt because I had heard them before.

Different people.

Same message.

Vanessa had planted it everywhere.

“I believed her,” my father admitted.

I looked at him.

“You believed a woman you barely knew over your own son?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“I believed someone who sounded like she was trying to help.””

Silence filled the room.

Then I asked:

“Did you give her information?””

My father closed his eyes.

“A little.””

My stomach dropped.

“What information?””

“About Emily’s insurance.””

I stepped back.

“You gave her that?””

“I didn’t know what she wanted it for.””

“You didn’t ask?””

“I should have.””

I looked around the room.

My entire life felt like it had cracks hidden underneath the surface.

Friends.

Family.

Everyone had secrets.

Except Lily.

She was the only person who told me the truth.

My father reached for my arm.

“James.””

I stepped away.

“I need space.””

Before I left, he said something.

Something that stopped me.

“James.””

I turned.

“Vanessa wasn’t alone.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

“She had someone helping her.””

“Who?””

My father looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“You met her. You saw her plans. You don’t know?””

He shook his head.

“But I saw a name.””

“What name?””

He reached into a drawer.

Pulled out a folded paper.

“I wrote it down because I knew something felt wrong.””

I opened it.

One name.

One name that made everything worse.

*Rachel Bennett.*

My attorney.

The person helping me fight Vanessa.

I stared at the paper.

“That’s impossible.””

My father shook his head.

“I hope it is.””

I drove home feeling numb.

Rachel was the person I trusted most after this began.

She knew everything.

Every piece of evidence.

Every plan.

Every fear.

My phone rang.

Rachel.

I answered.

“James.””

Her voice sounded normal.

Too normal.

“Are you okay?””

I didn’t answer.

“James?””

I looked at the paper on my passenger seat.

“Rachel.””

“Yes?””

“Why did Vanessa have your name?””

Silence.

Not confusion.

Not surprise.

Silence.

Then Rachel said:

“Where did you hear that?””

May you like

My heart dropped.

Because that wasn’t the answer of someone who didn’t know.
